Aminova’s new EP

Aminova

Welsh Playmaker SynthWave artist Aminova has just dropped a brand new EP. Really hot on the heels of his last single, Body Double, this new five track record come just weeks after his previous release release. Is Aminova become prolific? He certainly looks like he’s becoming a workaholic. Have no fear though, from the sound of the Variants EP it appears he can keep up the quality, and that’s what counts.

From the EP’s into, Edges, an undulating multi-layered synthesizer instrumental, you know you’re in for an electronic treat. Edges intertwining melodies soon give way to Cut Glass Accent, a smooth slice of Italo tinged digital Funk. The melodic bassline is really something in this tune which, alongside a handful of B-Boy Electro percussive flourishes give the track a real subway vibe that is the prefect backing for the meticulously crafted leads. Places pulls you back into a deeper flow with ringing, haunting synths set against a gentle Italo rhythm section. A beautiful peice with a slight edge to it, both a hint of melancholy and a sense of optimism. Next up Amoureuse immediately floors you with a Sci-Fi bassline and draws you in with it’s melding of Cut Glass Accents groove and Places ethereal qualities, the real culmination track on the EP it’s five minutes of synthesizer heaven. The EP plays out with Corners a dreamlike canvas on which thick layers of synth tones and textures are painted to ease you out of the listening experience. Aminova is getting better and better with each release, and fast becoming one of the name to look out for on the SynthWave scene.

Pyramid’s ‘The Frontier’

pyramid

A new track from France’s Pyramid is always something to get excited about. Always delivering the very best Sci-Fi synth music, Pyramid’s musical narrative and ability to combine the atmospheric and the funky makes every one of his tunes a killer. Hot on the heels of his ‘Rising Day reMixes’ EP come this new track, the driving The Frontier.

The Frontier brings all Pyramid’s talents together. There’s the epic, cinematic quality to Pyramid’s tracks, a solid Disco groove, a hint of French Touch and some of the most rousing solo work we have heard in a while. Add to this a big euphoric breakdown and you’ve got a track that ticks all the boxes.  An airy journey though a futuristic soundscape, The Frontier is such an intricately crafted track, there’s so much going on and so much of it is really subtle, like half heard bass flourishes, or blended textures. Pyramid really is a master when it comes to creating musically rich, SynthWave and Nu-Disco. Roll on the album.

Arcade High’s ‘On The Edge Of Summer’

Arcade High

Late last month we reviewed Pittsburgh SynthWave producer Arcade High’s début album The Art Of Youth and was very impressed. The man must be a workaholic, the album is only just out and he’s already dropping new tunes.

On The Edge Of Summer picks up the pace and injects some feel good vibes into Arcade Highs work. Just from the title you can infer what to expect here. Sunshine nostalgia in synthesizer form, this is a track with a slight Dreamwave feel to it and a carefree attitude that come across in playful melodies and a smooth, laid back, rhythm section. Stick this track on, lie back, and relax.

Stellar Dreams

Stellar Dreams

Wow, Malaysia is really knocking out some seriously good synth music these days, not the first country that springs to mind when thinking about Nu-Disco and SynthWave, but if Dizkopolis have taught us anything, it;s not to underestimate the the epic synth power of Kuala Lumpur.

Joining their fellow countrymen comes Stellar Dreams. This duo cite Kavinsky and Daft Punk as influences but also seem to have a lot in common with the SynthWave scene. Their début track, Nightvoid is a brooding slice of post-Italo atmospherics. The sounds in this tune are really piercing, a densely layered track where each sound still cuts through the mix. Iqwan Ridzuwan and Khairil Shah cook up a thoroughly emotive track, conjuring the loneliness of the open road, a true night driving anthem.

Synth Records team up with Nooka for compilation

noozik

Brooklyn based SynthWave producer TEEEL is hooking up with New York design house Nooka, and bringing Aimes and the rest of the Synth Records crew along for the ride. They are all bringing you a free 13 track album, to be released three tracks at a time over the next few weeks.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what, or who, a Nooka was. Apparently they are a fashion design company that mostly does watches and accessories. They do some nice stuff to, retro futuristic style. Which makes the the perfect brand partners for Synth Records, who continue that retro future vibe into their music. The 13 track compilation, Noozik, kicks off this week with the first three tunes including these two from TEEEL and Aimes, who both offer up suitably Sci-Fi slices of SynthWave and Chillwave respectively. All of Synth Records output tends to fall in the ‘pretty awesome’ category, so a 13 track compilation should be a treat. The three tracks a week thing is a bit annoying though.

Pilotpriest’s ‘The Canyons’

Pilotpriest

Canadian SynthWave producer Pilotpriest’s album Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is still on heavy rotation ‘round these parts. Every listen reveals something new, like every listen is fresh. But that doesn’t mean we’re not eager for new material from the man, and so we are blessed with a brand new tune, The Canyons.

Apparently inspired by the forthcoming movie The Canyons, written by Less Than Zero & American Psycho’s Bret Easton Ellis and directed by Paul Schrader, Politpriest’s track of the same name is a lush, involving peice. Grounded by a solid beat and hypnotic reparative riff that allows the rest of the track to organically move and evolve around it. As with all Pilotpriet’s music, The Canyons is just beautiful, and electronic landscape of melody and texture that transports the listener’s head to somewhere completely fantastical while compelling their feet to dance. Most stunning work from this Toronto based musician, and hopefully much more to come.

High PKWY’s ‘Phoenix’

High PKWY

This is some seriously laid back electronic Disco grooves in the form of the new tune from Denver’s High PKWY. If you like your Disco slightly Chilly, your SynthWave slightly hazy and your real life slightly soft focus then this tunes for you.

Like a melting pot of all the waves, Phoenix incorporates the beats and textures of Chillwave, the retro roboticness of SynthWave and dreamy nostalgia of Dreamwave. Wrap that up with some Disco strings, off in the middle distance, and you’ve got the perfect Friday chill-out tune, with complex layers of synthesizers and electronic percussion enough to hold the fascination of any electronic music fan.

Gossip Culture reMixed by Tommy

Gossip Culture

Hey! It’s one of our favourite Chilly Indie-Electro types, Gossip Culture, reMixed by one of our favourite SynthWave producers Tommy! The Cleveland ElectroPopster is gearing up for a summer release for his new single Just Fine With You, along with a super secret reMix line up. One of those reMixers, however, we can identify as the cream of the French SynthWave scene.

The original track is a fun, rolling summery Indie-electro jam with a Chillwave edge. All floaty, catchy, vocals and washes of reverb. Driven along by a rolling bassline and retro synth stabs, Just Fine With You, captures and optimistic feel good vibe and an effortless Indie cool. And there’s sax, ‘nuff said. Tommy takes that vibe and runs with it, crafting a sweeping nostalgic sound with bright synths and an Italo groove. Slightly switching up the rhythm of the vocals, usually a disaster, works well here, pushing the track forward and making this, more dancefloor oriented version, more urgent feeling. Excellent work from both parties, we can’t wait to see what the rest of the single holds.

Birkii’s ‘Holy War’ reMixes (with Pégase)

Birkii

Parisian ElectroPop chanteuse Birkii’s Holy War single was released this week. We took a look at the original and Reflex’s storming reMix last week, now the EP is out we can check out some of the accompanying mixes. It’s quite an eclectic line up of quirky ElectroPop reMixes that makes for an interesting package.

Pégase is up first with a wonderful mixture of ‘80’s sounds and a ‘50’s vibe, it’s really like nothing you’ve heard before but works really well, especially with a track like this. On the surface it’s quite typical of French ElectroPop, slightly left field with a Indie sensibility, but it;s got the almost Rockabilly swing to it that gives it a unique flavour. Pol Rax delivers a pulsating retro synth mix that folds in elements of Italo and SynthWave into it’s spikey ElectroPop, very ‘80’s synths on this one. Also brining a retro feel to their mix is Zemaria. This Brazilian producer turns in a tune with a sweet ‘80’s DiscoPop style. With a nice amount of groove and a big cosmic chorus Zemaria’s mix is kind enough to include some vocoding for us. Thanks.

80s Stallone’s ‘Radioactive’

80s Stallone

One of the UK finest purveyors of all things Synth and Dreamwave 80s Stallone has premiered a new track, or new demo., of blissed out, summery, retro sounds.

Radioactive, is the kind of track that washes over you like waves of a deserted shore. the reverb washed arpeggios that weave in and out of this track make for a beautiful, almost otherworldly, sound. A simple, yet infectious bassline grounds the track allowing loads of room for the rich synthetic textures to paint a sonic picture. The way the arpeggios play with the bassline give the tune a nice rhythm. this is as beachy and laid back as SynthWave gets. Enjoy!”
