[Video] Goin’ Old School: Den Harrow, Max Him & Modern Talking

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

Kicking off with Den Harrow’s Italo classic, from 1985, Future Brain.

More Italo from rom the same year, it’s Italy’s Max Him’s single Japanese Girl.

Finally, German SynthPoppers Modern Talking’s début single You’re My Heart, You’re My Soul form 1984.

[Audio] Pet Shop Boys reMixed by Boys Noize

Photograph by John Wright

We’re  not going to lie, we were quite worried about this tune. Apart from the odd tune, Boys Noize have not been impressing of late, the last album, Out Of The Black, was more filler than killer, so the thought of Ridha getting his hand on Pet Shop Boys didn’t fill us with optimism. Imagine out relief then when, after a Mixmag première, it turns out that Boys Noize reMix of Axis isn’t too shabby at all.

The original of Axis is pretty amazing Stuart Price produced Italo gold and whilst Boys Noize reMix doesn’t hit those crazy highs, it does deliver a fairly storming hard dancefloor juggernaut. With a whole pallet of spiky synths, this reMix if Axis really does build up an infectious groove that it’s pretty hard not to get into, and serves up quite a nostalgic old school flavour. An out of place 2007 middle-eight aside, this a high octane killer of a tune.

Maya Jane Coles

Well this is the kind of thing that will get out interest! Our favourite purveyor of deep, mysterious, funky sounds Maya Jane Coles teaming up with top Swedish InustroElectroPop star Karin Park. Two artist we really dig, getting together? Always cause of excitement. This tune, Everything, is the second track from Maya’s forthcoming début artist album, Comfort.

Everything launches itself with shuffling percussion and growling bass tones, building the enigmatic mood as Karin’s slightly abrasive lament rings out. The track takes it’s time to accustom you to it’s mood, before gradually evolving, layering new sound and new percussion, until it busts in almost euphoric style. Both Maya and Karin are masters of creating atmosphere in their respective genres, so it’s no surprise that Everything is loaded with drama and emotion, all the while pinned down my that funky-as-hell, deep deep Maya Jane Coles House groove.

[Audio] Hemingway’s ‘Ace Neptune’

Hemingway

In Nu-Disco circles the début release from Toronto’s Hemingway could be considered quite long awaited. The guy’s built up quite a reputation for himself over the past year or so with a string of excellent reMixes. Now his première release is out, via Brilliantine, and having had it on rotation round electronic rumors HQ for the past couple of weeks we can definitely say it’s lived up to it’s promise.

Ace Neptune is the name of Hemingway’s single, and it’s a veritable Smörgåsbord of dreamy synthesizer Funk. There’s something interestingly proggy about Ace Neptune, there’s a definitely Cosmic vibe to it and you can imagine Hemingway surrounded by tiers of analog snyths, eyes tightly shut, generally having a synth freak out. The track takes elements from Nu-Disco, Dreamwave, SynthWave and Italo and constructs an epic built upon layer and layers of intertwining melodies and warping Galactic Funk basslines. Deceptively complex, this is a true synth Disco fan’s track. reMixes come correct from Jokers Of The Scene and this gem from Cyclist, who ups the Funk quota and leads the track from the space-station to an under-lit dancefloor to boogie the night away. Frantic Disco licks and slinky synths are the order of the day in this mix. Ace Neptune is a confident and impressive début, and one that should have Hemingway’s name on people lips.

[Audio] L’Étranger’s ‘Don’t Ever Change’ EP

L'Étranger

This week UK boogiemeister L’Étranger released his new EP, Don’t Ever Change. Released on his own new label, Thomorrow, Don’t Ever Change packs in four tracks of blissful House that follow on from his acclaimed La Bombe single, 1997, of last year.

Now Or Never kicks of proceedings in the EP, a warm, bouncy, warehouse track that sets the scene as we’re treated to thick synth bass, choppy vocal snatches and a hint of a Tropical vibe in the purcussion. Got To Know is an awesome, organ led, 90s House workout. All 909 hats and hypnotic hooks with a burbling Acidic backing, Got To Know delivers the prefect party groove, just the right side of Deep, it’s an undulating tune to loose yourself in. The 90s good time sounds continue into Please, the EP’s energetic high point. Layering a reverby House piano over the already compelling Chicago sounds gives the track swirling drive that leads to a full-on dancefloor monster. The EP plays out on Ask, a short Hip Hop beat fuelled outro that rounds off a solid, floorfiling collection of tunes. You should check it out.

[Audio] Russ Chimes reMixes Josh Kumra

Josh Kumra

Check out the latest reMix from Mr. Russ Chimes. I think out love for this guys music is pretty well documented by now, so we’ll shut up about it this time. Josh Kumra is an artist who’s new to us, but seems to have been building some serious hype in the past few months, especially around the release of his début album, Russ has delivered a reMix of his track, The Answer, which is out now.

We had a quick listen to the original, it seemed pretty stand public-school-boy-acoustic-Pop which is so prevalent in the UK right now, but Chime’s turns that right on it’s head, grabbing vocal snatches of the original and weaving them into an mysterious, evolving House tune that’s as energetic as it is compelling. One of the things we dig about Chimes’ music is the little flourishes and fills that litter his tunes, and this one if no exception, it’s coursing House groove is peppered with rolls, dips and tape stops, giving each section an added excitement. Layer all this with a big Rave lead and you’ve got a powerful dancefloor juggernaut.
