We’re  not going to lie, we were quite worried about this tune. Apart from the odd tune, Boys Noize have not been impressing of late, the last album, Out Of The Black, was more filler than killer, so the thought of Ridha getting his hand on Pet Shop Boys didn’t fill us with optimism. Imagine out relief then when, after a Mixmag première, it turns out that Boys Noize reMix of Axis isn’t too shabby at all.

The original of Axis is pretty amazing Stuart Price produced Italo gold and whilst Boys Noize reMix doesn’t hit those crazy highs, it does deliver a fairly storming hard dancefloor juggernaut. With a whole pallet of spiky synths, this reMix if Axis really does build up an infectious groove that it’s pretty hard not to get into, and serves up quite a nostalgic old school flavour. An out of place 2007 middle-eight aside, this a high octane killer of a tune.

Boys Noize

Even if Boys Noize did turn in a half-hearted, pretty mediocre album last year, he still knows how to pick a reMixer. Following hot on the heels of Chromeo’s stunning reMix of What You Want come this version of the single Ich R U by the second members of the disappointing album last year committee, Justice with a track that redeems them both.

The Justice reMix of Ich R U is a grinding Electro workout that harkens back to Justice’s glory days. majestic and slowly gruelling, Justice’s mix delivers all the stuff we loves about them in the first place. Brooding, dramatic Electro-House that builds to a storming crescendo. Deep pulsating synths, hypnotic little licks, and that piercing, baroque, quality that Justice got so right on †. It’s just a pity this’ll likely be a one-off sound.

We were a bit hot-and-cold when it came to Electro superstar Boys Noize’s new album Out Of The Black. Half of it was really good, the other half seems to be a bit by-the-numbers, and we would have expected more in 2012. One of the highlights of the record, if not the best track, was the album’s first single What You Want. This modern Electro re-imagining of PIL’s Order Of Death gave us really high hopes for Out Of The Black, so if he was going to get one of our favourite duos of all-time, Chromeo, to reMix anything, we are glad it was that.

And that’s what happened. The Chromeo reMix of What You Want actually starts off sounding more like Dave 1 and P-Thugg severely funking up the PIL track, before the just make it totally their own, after a while there’s next to no trace of the Boys Noize track left and what you’re left with is some amazing, funky tune loaded with Chromeo’s trademark talk box work, their trademark piercing synths and Dave 1 giving it some vocal passion. Perfect work, and a new Chromeo track. Which is, coincidentally, what we wanted.
