You know when Earl Grey drops a new tune that you have to prepare your ears for something a little different, a little interesting, and it’s no different with his latest tune. It’s a reMix of Mexicans Iñigo & Kamizi’s forthoming single Foreplay, and it mines the depth of early Futurist SynthPop and 80s space-age Italo to deliver an enigmatic synthetic groove with nods to B-boy Electro.
Through the tune there’s a strain of distorted vocals that would have sat quite nicely on some mid-80s EBM, but the rest of the tune delivers an amalgamation of post-Kraftwerkian dance music. Taking in everything from a early Bronx beat to an epic Italo arpeggio line, this truly is a tune for connoisseurs of electronic music and one that highlights Earl Grey as a standout producer amongst his peers. Oh, did we mention it’s damn funky too, in a lonely broken robot kinda’ way.

Here we have the new video from Pixel Memory. It’s for Night Colors (ROYGBIV Mix), a reworking of one of their songs from last year. A pulsating ElectroPop, more robotic, version of the tune.

In the past year we’ve given a fair bit of attention to the selection of new singles from British ElectroPop outfit Scarlet Soho, but if you at all a follower of SynthPop in the UK then you’ll know the Southampton based outfit have had had a long and prolific career spanning over a decade. Now, with the latest era of Scarlet Soho earning critical acclaim, the band are releasing a retrospective, Hit The Floor: Favorites And Rarities, of some of their finest moments from their first two albums, 2004’s Divisions Of Decency and 2009’s Warpaint, and a host of never-before-heard material. The album is being released as a strictly limited edition CD the comes equipped with a packed 16 page booklet that serves as a visual history of Scarlet Soho. It;s released at the end of the month, but you can pre-order here.
Scarlet Soho’s sound has evolved significantly over the years, and that’s perfectly reflected on Hit The Floor. From the post-ElectroClash Indie-Electro of Divisions Of Decency to the more guitar oriented Electro Rock of Warpaint, Scarlet Soho’s experimentalism with different styles and strict adherence to decent songwriting above all else had always delivered an interesting listening experience regardless if they are currently playing a sound you dig or not. There’s something for everyone on this compilation, whether it’s the raw electronics of Disconnected and Modern Radio or the polished Indie of This Nausea and Analogue Dialogue (Kill The Beat) you’re bound to find something that will be stuck in your head for the rest of the week. For a taster of what to expect, check out the insanely catchy (if a little overly Rocky) Speak Your Mind for a fine example of Scarlet Soho’s big catchy choruses and waves of lush synths, or this stripped back EBM reMix of What You Need, by Canadian EBM legends Psyche who deliver a nice combination of Piano and unprocessed electronics. Modular have just released another new track from Australian ElectroPop outfit Cut Copy’s forthcoming new album, Free Your Mind. Alongside recent singles Free Your Mind and Let Me Show You, album track We Are Explorers helps give us a full picture of what to expect form their long awaited fourth album.
We Are Explorers is pretty classic Cut Copy. Shockingly infectious ElectroPop, all buzzing synths and crazy purcussion. With a nice hint of the 80s, over some rocking power Indie-Electro. As you’d expect from Cut Copy, the song itself is whimsical, anthemic and ridiculously catchy. Which tempers the abrasive synths, synths that drop moments of chainsaw grind and Acidic burbling amongst the retro chords. We are definitely looking forward to this record. It’s all go in the world of 80s SynthPop legends Blancmange right now. Irene & Mavis, their much lauded début EP from 1980 has been reissued by Minimal Wave records. The six tracks of classic British electronic experimentation, before the catchy Pop tunes, is out now. Alongside which Blancmange are about to head off on a UK tour playing their 1982 breakthrough album, Happy Families, in it’s entirety. Available exclusively on the tour (with a general release coming later) will be Happy Families Too…, a limited edition album set which includes updated recordings of the original songs and reMixes. One of those reMixes sees ElectroPop godfather Vince Clarke, of Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure & The Assembly fame, reMixing Blancmange’s biggest hit, Living On The Ceiling. We’re proud to bring you the world exclusive premiere right here on electronic rumors.
A while back Vince Clarke tweeted about how much fun he was having with this reMix, and it sounds like it. Keeping the originals song structure intact (well, you would with such an instantly recognisable tune wouldn’t you), Vince beefs things up a bit with some pounding Techno, borderline EBM, drums and tough synth riffs. Dropping in the odd Acidic squelch here and there, Vince drives the energy levels up as the track heads toward an epic piano breakdown before launching back into it’s power synth finale. As a meeting of SynthPop pioneers, it definitely doesn’t disappoint.

Phase two Bright Light Bright Light material is coming thick and fast now. Only recently we were treated to An Open Heart, taken from the SynthPop rising star’s first post-début album EP, In Your Care. Now we can have a listen to the EP’s title track, due out next month. This might be our favourite track from the EP so far.
Co-produced by The Invisible Men, In Your Care is both a classy and classic slice of ElectroPop goodness. Resonant with an emotional heart, In Your Care layers an anthemic, passionate vocal performance over a solid dancefloor core. There’s been a piano version of this tune knocking around for a while now, but paired up with warping synths and a relentless kick, In Your Care released a whole new energy. It’s been absolutely ages since we heard anything from Danish artist I Am Noxious. We honestly didn’t;t know is he was still in the business or not. His deeply introspective brand of Bedroom Pop has been with us almost since out inception, beck when Bedroom Pop was a recognized ‘thing’. So, it was a surprise to us when he delivered a brand new tune into our inbox, Watch My Ship Go Down. A tune with proves he’s lost none of his reflective flair, but adds a little bombast to the mix.
Listening to Watch My Ship Go Down you can quite easily slip back into the I Am Noxious groove. That comfortable, personal vibe given off by his music is still present in these new recordings. It’s a pensive track, resting on a combination of toytown beats and gently piano supported by swirls of vintage sounding synths. T’s vocals convey an intimate quality, as with the best Bedroom Pop, but Watch My Ship Go Down also has a surprisingly euphoric chorus up it’s sleeve. A great Monday morning track.

Just gotta’ drop a little copy and pasted press release here, it;s not often we get press releases with lists of awards in. “Thief is the new electronic pop project of PJ Wolf. A previous winner of the Triple J Unearthed Top Song competition and recipient of the Foundation for Young Australians Buzz Grant, PJ was recently shortlisted for the prestigious Vanda and Young songwriting competition for his track Closer.” We can’t help but wonder of the Foundation for Young Australians Buzz Grant is a grant for young Australians who buzz or a buzzing grant for young Australians, we’d like to think it was the latter, must be a nightmare in batteries. Whatever the case, that’s quite an impressive rack of achievements this guy had to his name, and now he’s traded in his guitars for some altogether better synthesizers and joined forced with Brisbane-based producer Matt Redlich (Emma Louise, Hungary Kids Of Hungary, Yes You) to form Thief to deliver the sweetest of SynthPop tunes, like Broken Boy.
Broken Boy is like a soulful Kraftwerk. Vintage drum machine beats with an old school Electro pop craft out B-boy rhythms amidst a sea of analog arpeggios that forms a nice contrast to the more Indie piano and bass work. Quite a stripped down and minimal track, Broken Boy still maintains it’s humanity, largely thanks to the heartfelt vocals that wash the track. The tune is complimented by a reMix from Brazilian producer Césare, who turns the track into a lush dance tune. Not quite Nu-Disco, but leveraging a lot of funk in it’s retro dancefloor action. An impressive début all-round, we’ll be keeping an eye on Thief.
