[Audio] Oliver’s ‘Mechanical’ EP

Oliver

This week lauded LA Dreamwave duo of Olivers, Oliver, released a brand new EP on A-Trak’s Fool’s Gold Records imprint. An EP that had been pretty polarising amongst fans of their smooth west coast Disco sound. The Oliver’s had been hinting that they would be branching out, style wise, for a while now, but delivering an EP containing hard hitting Electro tunes has raise as many eyebrows as it has smiles.

So, how is it really. Well, for a start it;s very good. even if it’s not to your taste, there’s no denying that it is an amazingly produced EP, these two are really at the top of their game, and on the whole, despite the odd cheesy Electro riff, Oliver’s should does shine through in the track. MYB is about 70% standard rave tune with the occasional glimpses of the Oliver brilliance we know and love. Similarly Night On My Mind  promises to be a deep, moody, SynthWave tune, until the big early 2000’s Electro-House riff kicks in to ruin things. All is not lost though, the EP’s title track, Mechanical, is an absolutely beautiful, growling, synthetic ballad. Haunting vocals, lush synths, big retro drum fills, it;s an amazing tune. Alongside which sits Control, the track most people seem to have picked up on. A rapid fire, Funk laden, assault of arpeggios and vintage keys. Infectiously danceable and packed with more robo-boogie than a robo-boogie factory. Oliver’s Mechanical is a mighty fine EP, it just might not be the EP you were expecting.

[MP3] Clancy’s ‘How To Hold On To You’

Clancy

The one and only Clancy’s back in the production hot seat with a brand new track. We always tend to love it when this dude drops a new track, and so far he hasn’t disappointed. His new tune, How To Hold On To You, can be added to the ‘hasn’t disappointed yet’ pile.

How To Hold On To You continues on Clancy journey from Dreamwave hero, to Nu-Disco groover, to House jackmaster. This one’s all about pulsating deep basses, infectious piano riffs and snatches of diva vocals. Soundtracking a late 80s Chicago warehouse, How To Hold On To You, rises and falls with swells of emotion as to hooks you in and keeps you entranced until the end. It’s track like this that make us glad the Chicago House sound came back.

[MP3] Lancelot’s ‘Higher Ground’

Lancelot

Fresh Australian producer Lancelot, who released the awesome We Can Dance last year on Binary, has just unexpectedly made his return with this lush, Housy Disco tune. The free download comes after  quite a period of relative quiet front he man, but that’s fine, we here are big believers in quality over quantity and think the current culture of having to release all the time is harmful for fans and producers alike. right here Lancelot proves why it’s best to take your time and get it right, he definitely brings the quality.

Higher Ground mixes up deep House vibes with Tropical Disco feel, which makes for a euphoric, feel-good, but irresistibly dancey tune. Hypnotic, but funky the track wraps you in it’s arms and doesn’t let go until the dance is over. this is truly one to get lost in on the dancefloor. We’re hoping that 2013 is a year we will hear a lot more from Lancelot.

[Audio] Jupiter reMix Yan Wagner

Yan Wagner

French producer Yan Wagner’s recent Forty Eight Hours album didn’t leave out MP3 player for very long in the latter half of 2012. A Housey, ElectroPop opus that deserved wider attention. Yesterday the single Changed from the album was released, and alongside reMixes from Arnaud Rebotini, The Hacker and Tristesse Contemporaine sits this version from one of our favourite ElectroPop duos, Jupiter.

Jupiter get busy with their playful DiscoPop style all over the track. Their now trademark bouncy bass is at the fore of the track, providing a rock solid, funky, bedrock for layers of spikey tones and cosmic synths to dance around the tracks four and a half minutes. A stark contrast to Wagner’s deadpan, Factory-esque style, this meeting of styles works infinitely better than it should, more power to Jupiter for pulling it off. By the time the reedy synth solo kicks in you can;t help but be totally hooked.

[Audio] Disclosure & AlunaGeorge

Disclosure & AlunaGeorge

This is White Noise. It’s a collaboration between awesome House duo Disclosure and even awesomer Electro R&B duo AlunaGeorge. It reader it head last night. It broke the internet.

And you can see why, the amount of talent featured in this track isn’t wasted. Disclosure create the perfect, otherworldly, soundtrack. Part Acid House, part Bleep House, all warehouse, White Noise is a nostalgic trip for anyone who was raving in 1990, but the addition of Aluna’s vocals give the whole affair a soulful Pop twist. No-one really thought of ElectroPop Bleep House back in 1990, maybe if they had the scene would have lasted for longer than a year. this is the prefect melding of deep Dance Music vibes and Pop sheen. amazing. (P.S. I refuse to call Bleep House ‘Yorkshire Bleep & Bass’, we called it Bleep House at the time, and I’m sticking with that!)

[MP3] Cut Slack reworks Midnight Star

Midnight Star

Here’s Portuguese outfit Cut Slack with a brand new track. This time it’s ‘80s electro Soul outfit Midnight Star that gets Cut Slack’s attention with their reworking of their 1986 classic Midas Touch.

Rather than a reMix, this track is a masterclass in how Edits should be done. Cut Slack have completely stripped back the vocals, leaving only a faint, processed, trace of the song to haunt the beats. then by highlighting the tunes dancefloor qualities, Cut Slack turn the track into the prefect Synth Disco groove. This track is full of the best in nostalgic electronic Disco. Big stabs, twisting synth riffs, a boogie down beat and load of head nodding attitude. One of the middle of the dancefloor.
