[Audio] Tesla Boy’s ‘The Universe Made Of Darkness’ (+ new single featuring Tyson)

tesla boy

Russian ElectroPoppers Tesla Boy’s début album, Modern Thrills, is one of our favourite albums of all time. Back in 2009 the totally nail everything that was so good about the burgeoning Dreamwave and post-Dreamwave Nu-Disco scenes and wrapped all that smooth LA funk and 80s soundtrack epicness with Pop sensibilities and incredibly catchy songs. Their sophomore full length release, The Universe Made Of Darkness, out this week, has been on rotation here for the past couple of weeks after a first few nervous listens. This album has so much to live up to, so many expectations, we just didn’t know if it would deliver.

It does. In abundance. Tesla Boy’s sound had only matured on this release, there’s a greater width of influences and more attention to detail. The Russian’s have managed to release an album that sounds quite a bit different to their premier record, but still unmistakably Tesla Boy. The album still retains the cool Disco vibe, the epic songs, but has a larger scope, and a bigger sound. Kicking of with Dream Machine, a smooth piece of arena SynthPop that weaves a proggy vibe into it’s 80s LA funk, the album soon launces into Tesla Boy’s most recent single, the energetic, anthemic, M.C.H.T.E. before bringing the groove right back on Invisible. Invisible is a laid back, but powerful, track that mixes a poolside feel with huge grinding synths and is indicative of Tesla Boy retaining their cool boogie, but making it so much more expansive. Up next is Broken Doll, which features the awesome Tyson. The perfect cool, dirty Disco tune that makes a brilliant platform for Tesla Boy’s Anton, and Tyson, two ElectroPop heavyweights to duet. Wicked Disco licks and slab bass rub shoulders with gritty synths and a relentless mid-tempo pounding. Broken Doll will be the bands next single. Previous single Split is up next, with a little old school Tesla Boy nostalgia, as with another (quite) old single Fantasy that follows. Saturn is the first of a couple of musical interludes, a beautiful and haunting 80s soundtrack-esque piece with a slight oriental feel and a surprising highlight of The Universe Made Of Darkness. Undetected is a bass heavy Nu-Disco bouncer that blends a little 80s UK Pop into the thick, warbling slo-mo funk that is complimented by the shimmering keys and hazy 80s Soul of Start. After the abstract bass House interlude of Something Deep, we are hit with Paraffin, which features Fritz from Azari & III. Paraffin is full on RoboPop Disco, an energetic, kinetic, but ultimately slick meeting of Chicago House and Dreamwave where everyone’s a winner. Which leaves the album to play out on the full-on early 90s DancePop of the single 1991. So there it is. The Universe Made Of Darkness was one of, if not the, most anticipated album of the years for us, and we are so relieved to say, it’s awesome.

[MP3] Say Lou Lou’s ‘Julian’; free reMixes

Say Lou Lou

Australian/Swedish Say Lou Lou duo are currently riding the wave of success with their current single Julian. In order to commemorate the critically acclaimed track, the girls are giving away a free reMix bundle featruing some choice cuts from some interesting artists. Here’s out favourite two.

Australian Nu-Disco Lancelot producer can always be counted on to deliver the goods, and with his take on Julian he’s gone off in a deep, almost Bleep, House direction and totally nails the sound. Pulsating subsonic basses and warm filtered organs swirl around the track. A lavish palette of rounded sounds fill every corner of the mix, spellbinding warehouse grooves and seedy beats create an air of danger and mystery that allows the girls vocal to take on a new, moody, aspect. The Bleep House riff is pretty killer too. Newcomers The Chainsmokers, in contrast, bring the full on, uplifting, dance-party sheen which teeters on the edge of cheesy when compared to Lancelot’s mix, but you can’t help but smile to this one. Those two aren’t all that included in the free bundle, you can download the whole thing here.

[Audio] Parralox’s new single

Parralox

Australian SynthPoppers Parralox have just released a brand new single, Silent Morning, which seems to see their journey though 80s SynthPop head toward the end of the decade. The Ryan Adamés featruing track catches the wave of current late 80s/early 90s revival tracks and brings the trend right to Parralox’s sound.

Loaded with all the elements we love about that period in music, post-B-boy Electro beats, orchestral stabs, digital synth bass and extra cowbell. None of this is too surprising though, as the track is actually a cover of 1987 obscurity Silent Morning by Noel. With a pair of amazing vocal performances by both Adamés and Parralox’s Amii Jackson and a truly period electronic backing, this cover of Silent Morning is pitch perfect retro pop. Check it out.

[Audio] Goldroom reMixes Owl Eyes

Owl Eyes

Just as the weather is getting warmer here in the UK, hopefully for good (you can never really tell when summer’s going to start here), Goldroom drops a brand new reMix to soundtrack our forthcoming holiday weekend. Turning his not inconsiderable talents, this time, to Australian singer/songwriter Owl Eyes and a track off her recent début EP, Faces, to be featured on a forthcoming reMix release.

Around the one minute mark, in this reMix, Josh drops an immensely funky little Acid riff that hangs around throughout the tune. Burbling 303s may seem like a departure for the king of Dreamwave but it’s blended so effortlessly into the lush tropical Disco that it sounds perfect. Hypnotic and enticing. This little nod to the warehouse, from the beach, is just enough to give the track the kind of essence that would work just as well under the strobe lights as under the mirrorball. Hazy, summery, dancefloor, gold(room).

[Audio] Ronika reMixed by Sugardaddy

Ronika

Now that our girl Ronika’s utterly infectious Rough ‘N’ Soothe is out in the wild, and one of our surprise anthems of the summer (we say ‘surprise’ because we weren’t expecting it to get that stuck in our heads), we can give you a listen to the final reMix. this one comes from Sugardaddy, long standing duo comprised of Groove Armada’s Tom Findlay and Tim Hutton.

Sugardaddy whip up a vibe that walks the line between 80s epic and deep bassy House track. Bleeding snatches of rockin’ riff and soulful chimes over a B-Boy beat, this reMix created a enigmatic club groove for Ron’s vocals to drift in and out of. Replete with all manner of synthetic flourishes, the track feels like a Dub version of an existing tune, whist we imagine the other track to be lush 80s electronic Soul, this reMix is squarely aimed at late night dancefloors. Also, 100 points for the hilarious photo, that’s a genuine headline!

[MP3] Yuksek & Oh Land

yuksek_thumb_thumb

We’ve raved about French prodigy Yuksek’s new, Oh Land featuring, single a couple of times, but not yet been able to play you the track itself. Now the single is out, on Yuksek’s own new label Partyfine, the original (and best) mix and Yuksek’s own Club Mix are officially online for your listening pleasure, one of the catchiest singles of the year.

It’s hard to what to say about Last Of Our Kinds, kinda’ needs to be heard. It’s a swirling orchestra of drama and tribal drums. With a piano hook like a 70s musical, complete with “ahhh-ahhh”s and Oh Land’s 60s-esque vocal being the icing on the cake. It’s not your usual Electro track, it’s not your usual Pop track, but it works so well. Yuksek’s club take on the track delivers big beats to go with the quirky infectiousness. Stabby synths and a ton of clap and snare rolls, buzzing basses and deep electronic grooves, make this mix both a dancefloor smash, but quite ecclectic too. If you haven;t already you need to check out this single package right now.

[MP3] Rebeka’s ‘Unconscious’

Rebeka

Polish ElectroPop duo Rebeka, who you may remember from last year’s Stars on Discotexas, release their new album today. Hellada is a twelve track ElectroPop oddessy that comes out of Kamp!’s label Brennnessel, and to celebrate the release the duo are giving away one of the albums tracks, Unconscious.

If Unconscious is anything to go by, the album’s going to be areal treat. A distant, ecclectic slice of ElectroPop. With a gently synth backing, made up of pulsating bass and warm tones, the track creates a dreamlike, hazy mood with more than a little 80s SynthPop referencing going on. Iwona’s vocals glide over the song like slightly eerie silk. Loaded with surprising flourishes Unconscious brings some enigmatic, haunting, but irresistibly groovy, SynthPop into your life. Check out the album.
