Anto Greekson

Anto Greekson

OK, let me just start by sating that, yes I am aware that is the single worst record cover ever made. It’s such a truly terrible peice of misguided marketing that I can’t even bring myself to show you the whole thing. A graphic design and artwork failure so bad that I very nearly didn’t listen to the music at all. But that would have been a mistake, because the music of Greek Swede Anto Greekson is really sublime at times.

Anto makes Electro tunes that swing between full-on bangers and sweet SynthWave tracks. As evidenced on his new EP ‘Fantasy’, his bangers are top quality, EBM tinged cacophonies of chainsaw synths and heavy bass that would kill in any hard Electro set. However, it;s his more melodic peices where Anto really shines. ‘Galaxy’ for example, drops a hard beat and rapid fire Italo basslines, but then layers it with some soaring synth leads that would easily be suited to some futuristic ‘80’s TV show. Still working the buzzsaw sounds, ‘galaxy’ is an altogether more musical offering. As is ‘Naked’, again still in-your-face Electro, but somehow less obnoxious as the more banger-oriented tracks, here there is flying shimmering synth sounds and a sense of melody to the distortion. ‘Streetlights’ is the other standout on the EP, the most Italo of the collection at times sounding, working bit-crunched sounds into a rolling groove and occasionally sounding a bit like Mille. All in all it;s a pretty good début, Anto needs a lot of work on his production (and a new graphic designer!) but this one shows a lot of potentiol, and we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on him.

Adamski’s ‘I Like It ‘ EP

adamski

Adamski has had a long and illustrious career. Instrumental in bringing dance music to the Pop masses when he, along with his Ensoniq SQ80, brought digital synths into Acid House (I had an SQ80, used to spend ages trying to copy Adamski!) and gave the world Seal (movie soundtracks would never be the same again). That was back in ‘89, and he’s been recording off and on ever since, sometimes as Adamski, and in recent times as Adam Sky.

But it took our friend Jerry Bouthier’s Continental Records to get him to don the Adamski hat once more for his forthcoming ‘I Like It’ EP, and it strangely sounds just like Adamski should! The lead track is a big Disco-tinged rave monster. It’s a definite London vibe, deep, hypnotic riffs and brain infecting synths work best on the capitals dark mysterious dancefloors. Places you can loose yourself in a track that takes in the last two decades of the producer’s career. ‘Wot Happened To You?’ is more straight-up Nu-Disco, still with a strong ‘90’s House vibe but more of a solid groove and slick Disco guitar snatches here and there. We first heard ATTAR!’s reMix of ‘I Like It’ on the last Aeroplane mixtape and it does an amazing job or reining the track in with a solid bassline and, naturally cowbell (the only thing the original track didn’t have). ATTAR!’s mix has such an epic lead line that’s pure euphoria inducing, there’s no way that this won;t kill on the dancefloor. Discotexas’ Mirror People smooth things out even more with their late ‘70’s Funk inspired Disco workout of ‘Wot Happened To You?’. moving you with the Disco and surprising you with some Rave keys. Holding the read is another mix of ‘Wot Happened To You?’ from French synth guru Blackjoy with a Disco sampling dark and moody Italo version that stands out from the pack in it’s pure difference to the rest, it’s an epic, cinematic track that is the perfect closer.

Big C reMixes Blac Swan

Blac Swan

Fresh from his reworking of Wheel Wells ’Morning Light’ London nomad Big C has dropped another bombshell mix. this time taking on New York genre chameleons Blac Swan and their ‘Night Drive’.

In all honestly, the original version of this track is pretty lame. It’s got a nice crunchy production but it’s based around a really simplistic riff that never goes anywhere, enter Big C to sort shit out, take that riff and add it to intricate layers of melody. With a pounding rhythm, and enough elements, both gritty and sparkling, to carry the riff along to somewhere emotionally resonant and build the whole track up to it’s Drum ‘N’ Bass finale. Big C’s reMix is a strange and complicated beast, but one that would rock the dancefloor.

Kool Bandits’ ‘I Want You’

kool bandits

This kinda’ got buried in out Inbox, it happens sometimes. we had a big clear-out this weekend and this mail from France’s Kool Bandits from a couple of weeks ago floated to the top. I don’t know how we could have missed it, it’s totally awesome growling French Touch. Time to make up for the oversight!

With an unashamedly Poppy hook and some nice, hypnotic vocodered vocals it’s clear that Kool Bandits are aiming for something that will worm it’s way into your heart and mind. You won’t be able to get this massive chunk of Disco our of your head. With groove laden basslines playing off against chainsaw synth riffs it’s the prefect mid-point between Funky Nu-Disco and euphoric Electro-House. Apparently there’s a full vocal version coming soon, we can’t wait!

Anniversary compilation from La Bombe

la bombe

Awww, isn’t it sweet. London’s La Bombe Recordings is turning the ripe old age of two. But rather than crying a lot and soiling themselves like most respectable two year olds, La Bombe is going to be releasing a compilation album to proudly show off what they’ve achieved since their inception and to give you a glimpse into the future.

The ten track record will feature five classics from the La Bombe back catalogue and five brand new tunes. We’ve feature quite a lot of La Bombe output in the past twenty four months here on electronic rumors, mostly from the funkier or more eclectic end of their roster, such as Blende and Douze who always give us something powerful and groovy. But when you want a flat out Electro banger La Bombe is definitely the place to go. Check out some of what to expect from this collection, including ‘Girls’ the new killer from Les Tronchiennes,  pleasingly titled ‘A Fistful of Boom’.

Queen Of Hearts & Kissy Sell Out

queen of hearts

Last night, on his final BBC Radio 1 show Rave renaissance man Kissy Sell Out premiered a brand new tune featuring the vocal stylings of our reigning ElectroPop monarch, Queen Of Hearts.

‘You’re Not The One’ may be in it’s infancy as a track but it’s already sounding like it could take festival season by storm. Whether this is what the finished product will sound like is anyone’s guess but I’m pretty much expecting to be dancing to this in a muddy field in a few months time. Queen Of Hearts’ own new double A-side single, ‘Neon’/’Tears In The Rain’, which was also débuted on the radio in the past few days, should be out 14th May.

Lovefoxxx & Steve Aoki

OK, so I’m really not a fan of Steve Aoki, I find his music mostly pretty tedious. Derivative and simplistic I have no idea how he got famous, it seems generally from ‘knowing people’ rather than ‘being good at music or DJing’. However, I flippin’ love Lovefoxx and thankfully Mr Aoki hasn’t made something completely terrible in ‘Heartbreaker’, their collaboration.

It’s a surprisingly good, pretty funky, Electro Disco tune that’s actually catchy as hell which I’m loving more each time I listen to it. It comes with an ace video too! You’ve earned yourself a temporary reprieve Mr. Aoki, but we’re watching you.

‘Heartbreaker’ is taken from Steve Aoki’s album, ‘Wonderland’, out now.

Simian Mobile Disco’s new single

Simian Mobile Disco

I still have Simian Mobile Disco to thank for one of the best night out I have had in the last ten years and while their last album didn’t grab me as much as their début I still follow their career with interest.

‘Seraphim’ is the first single from the duo’s forthcoming album ‘Unpatterns’ and is an interesting peice of electronic music after my own heart. It’s a deep track that although strictly a House track contains a lot of Trip-House and Bristol Beat DNA, especially in it’s vocals and it’s dubby use of spacious, buzzing synths.  Even the Acid line just adds to the multi-layered texture of the track. A promising start!

Black Strobe’s ‘Italian Fireflies’ is back, with a Reflex reMix

black_strobe

Black Strobe’s ‘Italian Fireflies’ is a bit of a modern classic. Released in 2033 in Kitsuné it had a riff that stuck in everyone’s head and the opening bars of the track, when the riff kicked in, would destroy dancefloors. Now Blackstrobe Records are re-releasing the track with a whole package of awesome reMixes featuring some serious talent bring the track into 2012.

Amongst that talent you’ll find one of our current faves, French SynthPop duo Reflex, who pull the track from it’s dark post-Electroclash resting place into the sunlight with a huge ElectroPop workout. Turning that evil, edgy riff into soaring retro lead line with some choice chords underneath full to give it more of a rousing kick, Reflex have done the impossible and turned the track into something bright and uplifting., which makes a really nice contrast to the growling, moody original. Both takes on the tune are ace and it;s nice to have the choice. The rest of the EP features reMixes from Munk, Yan Wagner, Second Date, Richy Ahmed & Corey Baker, Hey Today! and Mr. Arnaud Rebotini himself. that’s a hell of a reMix package and one we await excitedly.

Monsieur Adi’s ‘Fire Fire Fire’ EP

Monsieur Adi

As you’re probably aware, the full length version of French Disco renaissance man Monsieur Adi’s ‘Fire Fire Fire’ EP was released this week. It’s been eagerly anticipated, and well worth the wait.

We got the single version of ‘Fire Fire Fire’ last year, but that was only a taste of the awesomeness contained in this package. Adi is the master if orchestration, the man can score an orchestra like no one else making dance music today, maybe even ever, so it’s fitting that the EP’s intro, ‘Praeludium’ is a swelling, string ensemble, peice with a hint of sadness and a hint of anticipation that lease into the siren signifier of ‘Fire Fire Fire’, French Touch at it’s finest and a track we rated in our top 20 of 2011, kickin’ beats and soaring lead synths dominate your brain when this track is on. ‘Blood’ is up next, another track we raved about last year, from it’s harpsichord led baroque introduction to it’s full-on challenge to Daft Punk at their best. ‘Last Stand’ is next, a track that back in May last year when we first wrote about we everyone thought would be the EP’s lead. Gary Go lends a layer of vocal ElectroPop to Adi’s slick Nu-Disco a creating a nice Poppy mid-point to the EP before the ride sends you toward the deep, emotional, retro Funk of ‘Requiem’, a powerful track that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. The EP plays out with ‘In Caelis’, a final orchestral movement which is both rousing and a slightly bitter end to the EP. Monsieur Adi is, above all, a musician and composer before producer, and that’s what makes him stand head and shoulders above his peers. and y’know what, if Daft Punk never release anything else, I think I’d be happy for Adi to take up their torch.
