Lovefoxxx & Steve Aoki

OK, so I’m really not a fan of Steve Aoki, I find his music mostly pretty tedious. Derivative and simplistic I have no idea how he got famous, it seems generally from ‘knowing people’ rather than ‘being good at music or DJing’. However, I flippin’ love Lovefoxx and thankfully Mr Aoki hasn’t made something completely terrible in ‘Heartbreaker’, their collaboration.

It’s a surprisingly good, pretty funky, Electro Disco tune that’s actually catchy as hell which I’m loving more each time I listen to it. It comes with an ace video too! You’ve earned yourself a temporary reprieve Mr. Aoki, but we’re watching you.

‘Heartbreaker’ is taken from Steve Aoki’s album, ‘Wonderland’, out now.

Simian Mobile Disco’s new single

Simian Mobile Disco

I still have Simian Mobile Disco to thank for one of the best night out I have had in the last ten years and while their last album didn’t grab me as much as their début I still follow their career with interest.

‘Seraphim’ is the first single from the duo’s forthcoming album ‘Unpatterns’ and is an interesting peice of electronic music after my own heart. It’s a deep track that although strictly a House track contains a lot of Trip-House and Bristol Beat DNA, especially in it’s vocals and it’s dubby use of spacious, buzzing synths.  Even the Acid line just adds to the multi-layered texture of the track. A promising start!

Black Strobe’s ‘Italian Fireflies’ is back, with a Reflex reMix

black_strobe

Black Strobe’s ‘Italian Fireflies’ is a bit of a modern classic. Released in 2033 in Kitsuné it had a riff that stuck in everyone’s head and the opening bars of the track, when the riff kicked in, would destroy dancefloors. Now Blackstrobe Records are re-releasing the track with a whole package of awesome reMixes featuring some serious talent bring the track into 2012.

Amongst that talent you’ll find one of our current faves, French SynthPop duo Reflex, who pull the track from it’s dark post-Electroclash resting place into the sunlight with a huge ElectroPop workout. Turning that evil, edgy riff into soaring retro lead line with some choice chords underneath full to give it more of a rousing kick, Reflex have done the impossible and turned the track into something bright and uplifting., which makes a really nice contrast to the growling, moody original. Both takes on the tune are ace and it;s nice to have the choice. The rest of the EP features reMixes from Munk, Yan Wagner, Second Date, Richy Ahmed & Corey Baker, Hey Today! and Mr. Arnaud Rebotini himself. that’s a hell of a reMix package and one we await excitedly.

Monsieur Adi’s ‘Fire Fire Fire’ EP

Monsieur Adi

As you’re probably aware, the full length version of French Disco renaissance man Monsieur Adi’s ‘Fire Fire Fire’ EP was released this week. It’s been eagerly anticipated, and well worth the wait.

We got the single version of ‘Fire Fire Fire’ last year, but that was only a taste of the awesomeness contained in this package. Adi is the master if orchestration, the man can score an orchestra like no one else making dance music today, maybe even ever, so it’s fitting that the EP’s intro, ‘Praeludium’ is a swelling, string ensemble, peice with a hint of sadness and a hint of anticipation that lease into the siren signifier of ‘Fire Fire Fire’, French Touch at it’s finest and a track we rated in our top 20 of 2011, kickin’ beats and soaring lead synths dominate your brain when this track is on. ‘Blood’ is up next, another track we raved about last year, from it’s harpsichord led baroque introduction to it’s full-on challenge to Daft Punk at their best. ‘Last Stand’ is next, a track that back in May last year when we first wrote about we everyone thought would be the EP’s lead. Gary Go lends a layer of vocal ElectroPop to Adi’s slick Nu-Disco a creating a nice Poppy mid-point to the EP before the ride sends you toward the deep, emotional, retro Funk of ‘Requiem’, a powerful track that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. The EP plays out with ‘In Caelis’, a final orchestral movement which is both rousing and a slightly bitter end to the EP. Monsieur Adi is, above all, a musician and composer before producer, and that’s what makes him stand head and shoulders above his peers. and y’know what, if Daft Punk never release anything else, I think I’d be happy for Adi to take up their torch.

Timo Juuti & Hector 87’s new EP

Timojuutihector

Here’s the latest release from Italian label La Valigetta to get you in the mood for the weekend. Timo Juuti & Hector 87 provide some truly infections tunes for their ‘Woo Chicks & Disco Wobbelz’ EP.

‘Disco Wobbels’ took me completely by surprise, we get sent a lot of mediocre Electro-House and Nu-Disco, it takes a lot for something we’ve never heard of to grab our attention, but ‘Disco Wobbelz’ did, it’s got a load of elements we’re starting to tire of, but it’s so well done, so funky, so blissed out you can help but get really into it. It’s a track that does a fantastic job of revitalising something that was in need of it. ‘Woo Chicks’ falls more into the Funky cut-up Nu-Disco camp and is a big peak time tune. The EP is crammed full of more originals and reMixes including this cut from Ghosts Of Venice, who bring some of his smooth grooves to ‘Woo Chicks’ for a more intimate version.

It seems it’s that time of the month to see what shit-hot things the Russians are up to. This time the wearerussians.com label are dropping a free single from Kensy Krackshow.

The single ‘The End’ and it’s B-Side, ‘Malkovich’ are two slabs of powerful, driving, Electro. Dark and gritty with the big, retro leads of SynthWave, the distorted chaos of French Electro-House, and an extra helping of twisted Acid mayhem. There’s some serious competition for the likes of Danger and Kavinsky here! Kensy also recently dropped a free album, ‘Power Of Illusions’, which you can pick up here.

Coloureds reMix Peter Gabriel’s ‘Sledgehammer’

coloureds

Sometimes a track comes along that just makes your face hurt from smiling. Out friends Coloureds have delivered the goods again, in the form of their take on Peter Gabriel’s ‘Sledgehammer’.

The Yellow and Blue noise terrorists give Gabriel what can only be described as a “right sonic seeing to in a back alley” as the layer their trademark chainsaw synths over ‘Sledgehammer’s Pop-Funk vibe. Coloureds are maturing so fast in their sound, shown by how intact they keeps the original song structure, and how much of the underlying groove they retain whist still blowing your ears with their aural assault. No longer a choice between dirty, distorted, confusing in-your-face Electro and dancefloor working Disco. Coloureds have mastered both.

New track from Kavinsky!

kavinsky

A brand new track from Kavinsky’s forthcoming album has leaked, we’re usually a bit cautious about posting leaks, unofficial releases just hurt the artists release schedule, but Kavinsky himself linked to the leak on his Twitter account, so we guess it’s not too bad. Plus, we’re too drunk with excitement to contain ourselves.

‘RoadGame’ see the French SynthWave legend on top form, and more cinematic than ever with an epic building track that, as a precursor to the album, lets us know that Kavinsky’s soundtracking of the Dead Cruiser is far from over. No-one tells a story in music quite like Kavinsky with his releases to date telling the story of a Ferrari fuelled ghost driver, and that’s one of the greatest things about the man, he shook up Electro, nailed SynthWave and created a whole mythos too! This is probably going to be a contender for the album of the year.

Jacques Lu Cont’s ‘Church’

MXM_SC_01_STUART_01

I don’t think there is any comeback in 2012 we are more excited for that that of Stuart Price/Les Rythmes Digitales/Thin White Duke/Jacques Lu Cont’s return to music making.

In ‘Church’, the second new track he has dropped, without fuss or ceremony’, Jacques Lu Cont shows the everyone why he is one of the top electronic music producers in the world today. It’s a track that puts everyone making bally Electro to shame. With an FM bassline (with a hint of Lisa Lougheed’s ‘Run With Us’ about it!) that has such impact and drops and build in just the right places, this tune is a dancefloor juggernaut. Probably the best flat-out dance tune we’ve heard in a while. Simply stunning. This is one church I could get behind.
