[Audio] Grum reMixes Luke Million’s ‘Midnight’

Luke Million

Does anyone else, when someone mentions Leeds based dance music genius Grum, get (to the tune of Monty Python’s Spam) ‘Grum, Grum, Grum, Grum, Grum, Grum, Grum, Grum, Grum, Grum, Grum, Grum, Grum, Grum, Grum, Grum’ stuck in their head for about an hour afterward? No? Just us then. We feel a bit mental now, but it’s good to finally get that out. We also feels a bit mental ‘cos we refer to ourselves in the corporate ‘we’…you know I’m just one dude, right? Life is odd.

Oh well, to combat life’s oddness for five minutes and nineteen seconds Grum has delivered this absolutely rock solid reMix of Australian Italo-Disco producer, and a bit of The Swiss, Luke Million’s Midnight. This is actually a bit of a throwback tune for Grum, like Grum of old it’s borderline Dreamwave in it’s right emotional retro synth sound. This, warbling bass, lush pads, the kind of piano hook that just wills you to move, this one has got all the ingredients for dancefloor rocker supreme. We love it!

[Audio] Jensen Sportag’s ‘Under The Rose’

sportag

Well, the countdown clock has started. We are now on the home straight to the November release of Nashville synthetic dreamers Jensen Sportag’s long awaited début album, Stealth Of Days. We don’t wanna’ boast or anything, but we’ve had our hands on the album for a while now, and it’s served as the prefect soundtrack to the end of the summer, it really is a piece of work that is worth the wait. The awesome Cascine have outdone themselves with this one.

Right about now, you can grab yourself another taster of what to expect. Following on from Bellz, a track the released just over a month ago, wrap your ears around Under The Rose, the kind of track that makes your legs go all wobbly. Impending wheelchair bound status aside, the track flows along it’s own ChillPop R&B stream, bringing with it plucked guitar and rampant slap bass alongside undulating dunes of synths. This is the kind of tune that looks right into your soul, resonating with your mood, and then says “nah…your soul’s well boring, let’s go dancing”. And does. Better than you.

[Audio] Bodhi’s ‘Imperfection’

bodhi

Due out next month on Future Classic is the new single from Cardiff based producers Bodhi. these two 25 year olds are venturing out this month, supporting Bondax of their upcoming UK tour, a pair of sounds the go perfectly together. Back with No More, the single, Imperfections, mixes a Deep, Techy, House sound with soulful vibes.

With a shuffling Garage House beat, Imperfections is a dancefloor controller. Drop this tune and the whole crowd will be lost in dance. A hypnotic, bass driven tune that permeates every part of you for it;s five minute length. Melodically used vocal snatches ride a pulsing bassline and a slowly, but methodically building wave of synths. Awesome midnight music.

[Audio] Body Party’s ‘Theme’

Body Party

Body Party is the new, or old as the case may be, project from Italo cosmonaut, Mild Peril’s Chris Flatline. Apparently originally conceived while Chris was DJing the now legendary Endurance club nights in London (which I guess put’s them around circa 2009-2010-ish), the tracks have been cleaned up and released for the first time to the public under the Body Party Moniker.

You’ll fine two releases on Body Party’s Bandcamp, the lead release being the single, Theme and it’s B-side, P.P.P.T.. Heavily New Beat, with a nod to Italo and a sprinkling of EBM, Theme a pounding beat with just a hint of Industrial purcussion to the Sci-Fi Italo we are used to. This kind of Belgian groove is particularly resonant with us, as we spend a good deal of our teens stomping to sounds like this. Synthetic Disco with a cold heart Theme manages to be both intimidatingly machine–like and and emotionally melodic, just like the best New Beat should. P.P.P.T. leans slightly more toward the EBM end of the spectrum, delivering jackhammer old school basslines and a proto-Acid hypnotic vibe before flipping the switch and sweeping in with some rousing SynthWave soundtrack work, a dangerous combination.

While you;re here, check out Body Party’s other release, available for free it contains two tracks, a brooding, relentless New Beat taken on Yazoo’s Situation and a bizarrely brilliant mash-up of Front 242’s Headhunter and Amnesia’s Ibiza.

[Audio] Booka Shade’s ‘Love Inc.’

Booka Shade

There’s some deep funky grooves in the for of the new single from the legendary Booka Shade. Love Inc. is taken from their forthcoming album, Eve, an album it look like almost didn’t make it. Apparently the duo nearly split up after the release of 2010’s amazing More! album, saved by holing up in a studio full of vintage gear and getting to feel like a band again. The result is released in November with this single preceding it in October.

The word that springs to mind when listing to Love Inc. is, oddly, pleasant. It’s a really nice tune. Bursting with low down House grooves and European club beats, it’s the densely layered cinematic arrangement and waves of rousing synths that make this track feel all warm and cosy. Getting a bit Techy in places, Love Inc. is the perfect combination for compelling dancefloor stormer and chilled laid back House vibes. the album should be interesting at the very least with appearances from Fritz Kalkbrenner and Groove Armada’s Andy Cato.

[Audio] Holy Ghost! reMix Donna Summer’s ‘Working The Midnight Shift’

Donna Summer

As the release of the eagerly awaited Donna Summer reMix collection, Love To Love You Donna, draws ever nearer, new track are beginning to break ground. Here we are very excited to grab a listen to one of our favourite bands, New York DiscoPop duo Holy Ghost! (who are gearing up for the release of their phenomenal second album, Dynamics) tackling Donna’s 1977 album track, Working The Midnight Shift.

The original pairs Donna’s heartfelt vocals with the classic Moroder Sci-Fi Italo, Holy Ghost! build on this, but add a little of their own Disco swing. Upping the energy levels slightly, this reMix bring big stabbing leads to the table whilst nodding to the originals arpeggiated bassline. Equal parts New York Disco, European Italo with a hint of DFA, Holy Ghost! and Donna Summer seem like the prefect combination to bring an original NYC Disco sound to 2013. Seriously, between this and the Chrome & Oliver reMix, we are very excited for this album to drop.

[Audio] Figure Of 8 reMixes Unique 3’s ‘Feels All Good’

We’ll be honest, we didn’t even know UK House pioneers Unique 3 were still going. We’re big fans of their classic tunes, like 1989’s The Theme, that whole sound conjures a very special time in dance music for us. So when our good friend Figure Of 8 drew our attention to his latest reMix we had to ask, “the same Unique 3???”, apparently the answer is yes. Back to the 808s then.

Coincidentally, we’re not sure whether intentional or not, Figure Of 8 actually captures some of the early House sound. Bassy and mysterious, slightly Sci-Fi and fit for a darkened warehouse. The combination of deep deep bass, bright otherworldly melodies and modulated vocals would be really fitting for the late 80s/early 90s, yet Figure Of 8 manages to make the combination sound bang up to date with only a hint of nostalgia. Pure enigmatic House, and dangerously enthralling, it’s a tune that really does make you want to loose yourself to dance.

[Audio] Kyogi’s ‘Higher’

Kyogi

Keeping up with the current crops of younger producers, showing their older contemporaries a thing or two, comes sixteen year old Kyogi hailing from Devon. Despite his age, this guy has already racked up releases on Shifting Peaks and The Fat! Club and a HypeM number one, as well a support from the likes of Bondax, Karma Kid and Armeria. He’s just released his latest EP, Higher, which is free right now on Bandcamp.

Higher is a big, thick tune that melds the worlds of Electro-House and Nu-Disco into a big room sound. A stuttering groove permeates the track thanks to a warping bassline and cut-up vocal samples. With an interesting array of instrumentation, Kyogi drops in everything from organs to warbling, oriental synths amongst the heave bass pump. A definite mid-paced floorfiller. Elsewhere on the EP you’ll find His Secret. More upbeat, His Secret hits you in the face with an infectious melody before launching into a warehouse jam complete with modulated vocals and subs galore. An impressive start to this young producers career.

[Audio] Citizen & Joe Ashworth’s ‘Situation’

Citizen

Situation is the latest release on W&O Street Tracks comes from London.Nottingham producer Citizen’s team-up with newcomer Joe Ashworth. These two together deliver straight-up deep club vibes on their new one, Situation. Prepare for some deep warehouse jackin’ vibes.

Featuring vocal work from Shona Carmen, the track own much of it’s DNA to early 90s House tracks, but it brandishes those influences subtly. Working it’s way into London’s clubland just as much as imitating Chicago pioneers. Rather than a pastiché of House-gone-by, Situation works a punchy, deep subby bassline and big diva vocals to their fullest amidst a contemporary arrangement. The best of both worlds really. Get into it.

[Audio] Katy B’s ‘5am’

katy-b

Following on from the pretty massive What Love Is Made Of, UK UrabanHousePop artist Katy B has just unleashed her new single, titled 5am. Released next month, the track recently débuted on Radio 1 and looks set to do some serious chart damage.

5am is a huge slice of House inspired Pop. Mixing up bit’s of 90s influenced Dance Music and bassy London House 5am delivers an energetic soundtrack to Katy’s increasingly smokey vocals. It’s a track with an big ol’ chorus, utterly infectious, complete with catchy lyrics and a hands-in-the-air hook that’s a sweet mixture of Ravey and Tropical. Definitely deserves a few spins.
