[Audio] Austra’s ‘Habitat’

Austra

Torontonian ElectroPop chanteuse Austra is gearing up for the release of her brand new EP. Titled Habitat the new one will come not only in digital format, but also in a limited run of 500 12”s. Following on from her last single, Hurt Me Now, itself taken from the amazing Olympia album, Habitat sees Katie Stelmanis returning to her more ethereal roots whilst injecting a little Deep House flair.

Long time live favourite, Habitat is an undulating, tribal epic. Moody and enigmatic, the bass rumbles, the kick drives and the uneasy industrial instrumentation rattles around the track creating a magical and futuristic soundscape. Katie’s haunting vocals temper the track’s edge and instilling a cinematic, narrative, feel. A timeless slice of electronic music.

ATTAR!

Belgian synth warrior ATTAR! returns this week with a brand new single. Once again showing off his electro prowess as he recruits Induce & Santana to drop 45 Days. Out now via Eskimo Records, the single comes complete with reMixes from Douze and Rob Made and an English version of the originally French tune.

But the reMixes have nothing on the sleazy SynthPop of the original. Pulling everything from Acid House to Italo into a slightly disco influenced mix, ATTAR! has created something akin to Visage meeting Jean-Michele Jarre produced by Phuture. As cinematic as it is groovy, Induce & Santana’s duelling vocals are the icing on the cake.

[Audio] Ku De Ta’s ‘What’s Going On?’

Caron Wheeler

There’s already a reigning king of updating Soul II Soul’s Back to Life (However Do You Want Me), but enter London based newcomers Ku De Ta to grab a little of that spotlight. Taking the vocal hook from said track, the duo whips up a massive House monster with all the bass you could ask for.

Serving up a restrained sprinkling of Caron Wheeler’s vocals, the duo go head first into a Garage-y House track with a luscious rolling synth bassline. The track is stripped back, excising big room chaff to concentrate on the pure, distilled, essence of the dancefloor. There’s a hint of Deep House, a hint of Chicago, and a hint of a warehouse vibe, all expertly played by Ku De Ta who have delivered a crate essential.

[Audio] Pawws’ ‘Give You Love’

Pawws

We’ve had our eyes, or ears, on North-Londoner Pawws for a while now, but never got around to writing anything. Well, prepare to have that remedied. Lucy Taylor is gearing up for the release of her new EP, titled Sugar, next month and it’ll contain this amazing retro-Pop gem. This is Give You Love.

It;s been quite a while since we’ve heard anything that manages to sound so fresh and contemporary, yet so incredibly 80s. Pawws song itself, is just that right blend of melancholy and optimism, and is modern Pop in every way. Sweet and slightly quirky, the vocals nicely contrast the rich musical accompaniment that is quintessential 80s SynthPop. It’s very easy (using the word ‘easy’ in context, not saying it’s actually easy!) to make modern Pop music, and very easy to make 80s throwback music, but not-so easy to pull of totally 2014 sounding 80s Pop. Pawws succeeds with buckets of style.

[Audio] IYES’ ‘Toys’

IYES

Late last week Brighton based ElectroPop duo IYES unveiled yet another new tune. Following hot on the heels of March’s Breathe come this new track. Still in it’s demo form Toys sees the dark R&B sound infused with a brushing of plucked guitar to further fill out their intoxicating musical swirl.

Toys, musically, borrows heavily from Dub, with echoing purcussion and a heavy heavy bassline, and brings those elements to a nice post-Chillwave setting. This is modern Pop music it it’s most intelligent. The vocal hooks in this track are pure Pop gold, but set to a heady concoction of intricately constructed musical elements that range from to Deep House to ChipTune and polished with an otherworldly vibe that let you just sink into it.

[Audio] Kosheen DJs’ ‘Take Me’

Kosheen

Released this week is the new EP from Bristol legends Kosheen darker, more dancefloor oriented, wing Kosheen DJs. Three tracks of pounding and unrelenting electronic groove that is highlighted by the EP’s lead track Take Me. Strap in for some bass heavy vibes.

Drawing as much from their Drum & Bass roots as they do hypnotic Deep House, Kosheen DJs Mark and Darren deliver a track that is involving and intoxicating. Rolling on low, pulsating bass grumbles the tune offers up a pallet of House stabs, 70s Spy Thriller notes and echoing vocal snatches that bob and weave around the relentless bass and kick groove like a lifeboat lost at sea. A full-on tune to loose yourself in on the dancefloor.

[Audio] Bit Funk reMixes Nameless’ ‘7 Days In The Sun’

Nameless

Here’s a new slice of tasty smoothness from New York producer Bit Funk. It’s a reMix of the new single from French rockers Nameless. 7 Days In The Sun is a stuttering Indie-Rock tune that is completely transformed in the hands of Bit Funk into sweeping Robo-Disco dancefloor silk.

Effortlessly cool, Bit Funk’s reMix of 7 Days In The Sun immediately wraps you in a blanket of warm synths and an easy Disco beat. Repurposing the original’s vocals as a modulated mantra, Bit Funk really does bring the sunshine to the song, spacing out groovy electric piano and a bouncy bassline along it;s six minute length. Evocative of hot summer nights and poolside parties, this reMix really hits the chilled, summery sweet spot.

[Audio] Miles Prower’s ‘Who Needs Real Life, Anyway?’

Miles Prower

Bristol SynthWavers Miles Prower are back with another new tune. Taken from their forthcoming new EP, titled Virtually Reality, the new track is an Italo infused instrumental that goes by the name of Who Needs Real Life, Anyway? and we’re guessing it’s the euphoric high-point of the release.

Keeping things sparkly and shimmering, Miles Prower deliver three minutes of synthesizer love, awash with bright melodies and starlight keys that drift over a sea of rapid fire arpeggio basslines. Taking it’s time to build up to full steam, Who Needs Real Life, Anyway? eases you into it’s optimistic groove before launching into it’s high-octane SynthWave cavalcade. The EP should be a good ‘un.

[Audio] Monarchy’s ‘Living Without You’

Monarchy

It’s been a while since we had new material from London SynthPop duo Monarchy, over a year (not including their collaboration with MiGHty mOUse), but the boys are back in town with a brand new single. Ushering in a larger, and perhaps more mature, sound is Living Without You.

The inclusion of grinding chainsaw synths might seem out of place for Monarchy at first glace, but by the end of the track the cinematic lift of the track brings it all together in a way that makes sense. Andrew and Ra go full throttle with this one, with both huge, anthemic, vocals and enough sonic power to push this squarely into Big Room territory. Unsurprisingly the new single is released via Ultra Records, purveyors of largely mainstream Dance tracks, whether they can shoehorn Monarchy into the big Progressive House market will remain to be seen, but we’ll enjoy the fruits of the effort.
