Goin’ Old School: Salt ‘N’ Pepa, Falco & Billy Ocean

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

One of the best synth riffs in existence, from 1988, Salt ‘N’ Pepa’s ‘Push It’.

Austrian Pop maverick Falco‘s ‘Rock Me Amadeus’ was an unexpected runaway hit in 1985.

In 1984 Mr. Billy Ocean released one of the smoothest songs of all time, ‘Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run)’. Performed here on TOTP.

Queen Of Hearts’ ‘Tears In The Rain’

queen-of-hearts11

Now this is what you need to ease yourself into the week after the long bank holiday weekend (if you’re UK reader, my stats tell me a good deal of you are from the US, sorry guys, I feel your pain), the second part of Queen Of Hearts’ seemingly BladeRunner themed new single. This flipside to ‘Neon’, ‘Tears In The Rain’.

This slice of ElectroPop beauty was produced by the awesome Mr. Stefan Storm from The Sound Of Arrows. Whist retaining the majestic quality of ‘Neon’ and shot through with the Queen Of Hearts particular band of melancholy, ‘Tears In The Rain’ is a rich and gentle track that envelops you in it’s warm musical embrace. Stefan’s twisting, hypnotic synths shows that signature The Sound Of Arrows’ optimism-against-adversity that perfectly mirrors The Queens’ smokey beckoning delivery, the combination of the two elevating the listener out of the darkness. Atmospherically layering the track with a hint of storm (the weather, not the dude) is genius, giving such a laid back track a sense of urgency adds to the drama of the song, giving ‘neon and ‘Tears In The Rain’ a appearance of narrative. There’s no doubt really that Queen Of Hearts is going to be a massive Pop star, that’s a given, but we believe she will constantly surprise her audience with how deep, how un-throwaway her Pop will be, and that’s what always makes a proper, true Pop star, one that sticks around. The video for the single A-Side, ‘Neon’, is coming soon, can’t wait for that!

Queen Of Hearts – Tears In The Rain (Produced By Stefan Storm)

Queen Of Heart’s ‘Neon’/’Tears In The Rain’ single is out 14th May. Out now is ‘electronic rumors Volume 1’ on which Queen Of Hearts features.

Kelek; new tune and reMix for Pretty Boy Makes Rave

kelek

German SynthWave producer Kelek is back with a couple of new tracks. We’ve been keeping an eye on Kelek for a while now, ever since his standout entry in Fear Of Tigers’ ‘The Adventures Of Pippi Longstrump’ reMix competition last year he’s been impressing us. This week he drops a brand new original and a new reMix.

Kelek’s new tune, ‘Alaska’, as a laid back slick of smooth Dreamwave. A retro synthed bouncer that is made for cruisin’. Rolling along on a synth Funk bassline the track a slightly a lot of things. Slightly Italo, slightly Electro Boogie, slightly Tropical, and massively more of a chilled groove than Kelek’s previous works. It’s nice to see this smoother side to his productions, and to discover that he can work more than one sound. ‘Alaska’ is there for hot lazy days and good times. Kelek has also tackled Pretty Boy Makes Rave’s ‘Change’, bringing out his Italo side for the challenge. And it works too, his reMix of ‘Change’ is classic Italo with a bit of ‘90’s House piano thrown in for good measure and a twisting, infectious lead line. Kelek is really starting to step up his game, exciting things ahead!

iamamiwhoami’s new video

iamamiwhoami’s new video is out. I know you have questions. Is it icy Scandinavian experimental ElectroPop? Is the video pretty weird? Does it carry on from the last? Is it both musically and visually amazing? Do you know what’s going on in it?

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. No.

The ‘Good Worker’, ‘Drops, ‘Server’, and ‘Rascal’ singles are out now.

Mitch Murder’s ‘Phobos Gun Run’

mitch murder

The undisputed king of SynthWave, Mitch Murder, dropped another new track over the weekend, proving he’s still on top form, still an innovator and still light-years ahead of most of the pack in teams of musical ability and pure flair for, and understanding of, retro synth music.

Obviously for someone so influenced by electronic ‘80’s movie soundtracks this was bound to crop up sooner or later, but this is probably the most Vince DiCola-esque peice that I have ever heard Mr. Murder produce. Drawing from DiColoa’s trademark mixture of both arpeggiated & sliding digital slap bass and staccato orchestral hits with big powerful progressions, Mitch Murder adds this to his own repertoire of urgent vintage synth lines and Moroder grooves. The synth solo in the track is simply stunning, it takes synth shredding to a whole new level and lifts the track up to stratospheric heights. Mitch Murder had produced another huge slice of otherworldly, nostalgic, synthesizer brilliance, and with amazingly clean, subtle production highlighted just how much work the much of the SynthWave scene has to do to be on his level.

Icona Pop’s ‘I Love It’

Fun fact: I photobombed one of Caroline from Icona Pop’s photos at the weekend, she seemed quite impressed with my photobombing skills.

So here’s their new single ‘I Love It’. It’s rowdy, raucous and tons of fun. All screaming and chainsaw synths. It deserves to be huge. Fredrik Etoall directs the video.

Van She X SebastiAn

van she

I think everyone in the world has been waiting for this one! Teasers of SebastiAn’s reMix of Van She new single ‘Idea Of Happiness’ has been making some big waves. The single isn’t out until later this month (unless you want to buy iTunes quality…in which case you can pick it up now, but being a discerning music fan I will presume you don’t buy from iTunes and would rather wait a few days for quality), so it surprising, but very welcome that Modular Recordings have decided to give away the track, I guess they knew people couldn’t wait.

And the track lives up to it’s preceding reputation. SebastiAn amps up the disjointed French Disco and applies it to the tune liberally. Gone are the big rave synths, to be replaced with a particular cinematic slice funky bass, wicked Disco licks and big strings. It’s actually quite a ‘classic banger’, if such a think can exist yet. It’s got all the right elements, in the right places, of the golden age of Ed Banger tunes, which seeing as it a reMix of Van She’s comeback tunes, is more than fitting and will definitely put a smile on your face. If you have missed French Disco experimentalists reMixing Australian, electronically leaning, IndiePop artists (it happened all the time in 2008!) then you will love this track. We do! (Classic Van She picture seemed appropriate).

Van She – Idea Of Happiness (SebastiAn reMix)

The single is released properly 13th May and features additional reMixes from Jonti, Hervé, and What So Not. Van She’s new album will be out this 6th July on Modular Recordings.
