Doctor Who: New Companion
Wow, it’s pretty rare that a Doctor Who rumour turns out to be true! Usually names and plot points are kicked around the Internet and then the production staff throw us a curve ball, as seen with the casting of the next Doctor, but the two main names filling forums and blogs, in the last few months, for the job of The Doctor’s next companion were Lily Allen and Michelle Ryan. It looks like the rumours were spot on this time!
Ex-Eastender Ryan should fit in well being no stranger to genre TV, having starred in Jekyll (written by Doctor Who’s next showrunner Stven Moffat), the short lived reboot of the Bionic Woman and recently as the antagonist in The BBC’s Merlin.
Starring as “the mysterious Lady Christina De Souza” in one of this years four specials doesn’t necessarily mean she couldn’t return as a permanent companion in the 2010 series (a leap that Cathrine Tate made).

M.I.A. at The Oscars!
So, the Oscar nominations are in.
Heath’s Joker for Best supporting Actor…”check”!
‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Hellboy II’ getting nods in the special effects and make-up categories… a pleasantly surprising “check”!
No love for ‘The Dark Knight’ in best picture or best director categories…an disappointingly unsurprising “check”!
Best original song is an interesting one though:

That’s right, British/Sri-Lanken Electro MC M.I.A. being recognised by the Academy…nice!!! The Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack was also released on M.I.A.’s N.E.E.T. label.

As I may have mentioned, I do quite like female vocalists with quirky/interesting voices, so I can’t help but have a soft spot for Lykke Li, especially when the likes of Death To The Throne take one of her better tunes and morph it into an Electro-House stomper!

Hot Chip cover Joy Division!
Hot Chip‘s finest cover version to date comes courtesy of War Child’s latest charity compilation ‘Heroes’.
It really does sound like Joy Division fed through a Hot Chip machine, every bit as driving and haunting as the original.
