Hot Hot Hawk’s new EP

hothothawk

Russian SynthWave producer Hot Hot Hawk has just released his new EP, ‘Ventilate’. Prepare for some retro soundtrack inspired synthesizer excitement.

‘Ventilate’ contains six track of post-Italo, rapid fire electronic soundtracks. Soundtracks to some kick-ass action movie from the ‘80’s that was never made. Of course, this scene is starting to get a little flooded so how does Hot Hot Hawk differentiate himself from the pack. Well, for a start he has an amazing grasp of Melody, which he weaves in and out of runaway arpeggiated basslines to spectacular effect. He also layers his tracks with sublet use of guitar, not in the crunchy way some do, but tonally, adding an extra pad or soaring solo. Another factor that sets him apart from a lot of his peers is his grasp of House and Disco, even Indie, influences he folds into his SynthWave tracks to give them that little big for Funk and groove. Overall though, Hot Hot Hawk produces some classic electronic soundtrack inspired moments, some rousing emotional peices that capture each desired mood perfectly. With an added bonus Disco round.

Saint Etienne’s new single

saint-etienne

UK ElectroPop legends Saint Etienne are gearing up for the release of their brand new album, ‘Words And Music By Saint Etienne’, next month. Ahead of which ‘I’ve Got Your Music’ follows ‘Tonight’ as the second single taken from the record.

‘I’ve Got Your Music’ seems to follow both musically and thematically from ‘Tonight’, and with a title like ‘Words And Music’ I would hazard a guess that the album will be about Pop music, and songs in general, and their power to capture a moment. As Bob Stanley says “the album is about believing in music, living your life by its rules”, The single is a lovely slice of classic SynthPop, but we would expect no less from Saint Etienne. Produced with Xenomania’s Tim Powell, it’s a effervescent, upbeat tune that bodes well for the album.

Big C reMixes Blac Swan

Blac Swan

Fresh from his reworking of Wheel Wells ’Morning Light’ London nomad Big C has dropped another bombshell mix. this time taking on New York genre chameleons Blac Swan and their ‘Night Drive’.

In all honestly, the original version of this track is pretty lame. It’s got a nice crunchy production but it’s based around a really simplistic riff that never goes anywhere, enter Big C to sort shit out, take that riff and add it to intricate layers of melody. With a pounding rhythm, and enough elements, both gritty and sparkling, to carry the riff along to somewhere emotionally resonant and build the whole track up to it’s Drum ‘N’ Bass finale. Big C’s reMix is a strange and complicated beast, but one that would rock the dancefloor.

New Young Pony Club’s new video

I love it when new releases from bands you like creep up on you. Here’s the video for the forthcoming new single from Indie-Electro champions New Young Pony Club, I didn’t even know they had a forthcoming new single!

The clip for ‘You Used To Be A Man’ is directed by Laura Buckley and is as abstract as the electronic beats. The track show a more subtle, eclectic side to NYPC. We’re liking it!

‘You Used To Be A Man’ is released 7th May.

Jupiter’s reMix of Sébastien Tellier’s ‘Cochon Ville’

Sébastien Tellier

French DiscoPop duo of the moment Jupiter made themselves a little DJ friendly version of fellow Frenchman Sébastien Tellier’s awesome current single ‘Cochon Ville’ for their last mixtape. Now they have released it, for free, in it’s entirety.

Jupiter’s version is a slick rolling Disco edit of the track. Ripe for the dancefloor Jupiter highlight that undulating Disco bassline. Stripping back the tune to it’s most basic Disco elements and the drawing them out over five minutes. With a particularly tension inducing build over the first half of the track until it drops you right into the heart of the song, this is definitely the mix to drop in the middle of the night.

‘Cochon Ville’ is the first single taken from Sébastien Tellier‘s new album ‘My God Is Blue’ available now via Record Makers.

Yuksek reMixes Gold Fields

gold fields

Australian Indie-Electro outfit Gold Fields sure know how to pick their reMixers. First G.L.O.V.E.S., now French baroque Disco maestro Yuksek takes on their track ‘Moves’.

‘Moves’ is actually a relatively old track, dating back to September last year, with Yuksek dropping his reMix first on his awesome Triple J Radio Mixtape from November. Now it has surfaced in it’s entirety we can have a full listen to that beginning section that sees Yuksek channelling his best Jean Michel-Jarre thought multiple layers of thick, but shrill, synths and echoing pads, before dropping the full on French Disco flavour.

Daroc’s ‘Wonder’

daroc

One of France’s best kept SynthWave secrets Daroc is proving that after his long absence his recent ‘Destination’ EP wasn’t a one off. He’s back for good and gearing up to be part of brand new release. ‘Additional Wonders’, a collection of 12 artists reMixing and covering classic tracks from French noisemongers WAT.

Taken from that record is his new song, a cover of ‘Wonder’, I’m guessing the lead track, and it’s truly beautiful. Transcending Disco or SynthWave, even ElectroPop, it’s distant, passionate, vocals hovers ethereally over otherworldly melodic synthwork. This is no dancefloor banger, this is Dreamwave for the mind. transporting the listener to distant planets of sound with cosmic pads and almost baroque keys and a vocal line that lends itself to the epicness and brings a slightly Bowie-esque quality in the second half of the track. This sounds like an  intro, at least that’s what it feels like from an audio narrative point of view, or an interlude. Whichever, it makes us excited to hear the rest of the album.

New track from Silenx

Silenx

Our favourite Portuguese producer off all things Funky and SynthWavey, Silenx, is back with a brand new tune, ‘Sun Express’. And it does exactly what it says on the tin. You want a smooth, feel good track loaded with retch synths and delicate piano?

‘Sun Express’ really is a sunrise in musical form. Silenx has captured the calm majesty, the understated awesomeness of a sunrise and reflected that in his synth work. Lush sounds played with gentle precision, echoing around the track lending a slightly magical quality to this Funky retro SynthWave track. There’s enough Disco in here to keep most people happy, but the track’s real strengths lie in it’s relaxed, Balearic groove, it’s synth nostalgia and it’s carefree vibe.
