[Audio] Chvrches’ ‘Lies’ reMixed by Ikonika

Chvrches

OK, stop what you;re dong and listen to this right now, ‘cos it’s bloody brilliant. Glaswegian ElectroPop apparitions Chvrches’ début track, Lies, is re-released with a full reMix package next month. We already posted the not-bad Tourist reMix, which, frankly, pales in comparison from this huge slice of Boogie coming from sometime experimentalist and obvious retro sounds lover Ikonika.

Ikonika delivers her very finest 80s synths and stabs on this one. Frantic B-boy beats  and a pulsating synth bass keep the energy levels so far up, choppy samples of the vocals and massive 80s chord hits just adding to the nostalgic dance party that is this reMix. The song itself is left, wisely, intact, but give a whole new twist with hints of electronic Soul retro Pop. There even a lush string section to instil little emotional connection, on and a phone ringing off the hook, which kinda’ works, lyrically. Anyway, it’s, frankly, amazing, and a definite contender for reMix of the year.

[Download] Perseus’ ‘Shadow Of The Beast’

Perseus

It’s been quite a while sine we last heard from French Express main man Perseus. Over a year in fact since his last rash of releases, the acclaimed Seychelles and Love In Zanzibar. From out of nowhere, this week saw the man dropping a brand new track, and possible his best to-date. We can’t stop listening to this one!

With a title like Shadow Of The Beast, and the eerie intro, you’d be forgiven for expecting some dark, a bit experimental, atmospheric piece. But no, Shadow Of The Beast almost instantly becomes on of the most infectious slices of Boogie you’ll hear this year. Given it’s first airing on Perseus’ Boiler Room set earlier int he month, Shadow Of The Beast rolls together a little Ashanti vocals, an rubbery bassline and a whip-crack snare with some lush 80s synths to create a Disco tinged, House leaning, R&B fuelled, retro dancefloor mover. That chime melody’ll send shivers up your spine.

[Download] Ren Riz’s ‘Get Yourself Together’

Ren Riz

Here’s a particularly chubby slice of Chicagoan House from Australian producer Ren Riz, who doesn’t release tunes nearly enough for our appetite but has dropped a new free download in celebration of hitting the 2K mark on SoundCloud. Followers, that is, not number of tracks uploaded (see previous statement).

Lifting the vocal hook from Psychotropic’s 1990 rave anthem Get Your Thing Together, Ren brings the piano in full effect for this bouncy warehouse groover. Pretty space and stripped back compared to many of todays House hits, Get Yourself Together concentrates it’s energies where it counts; beats, basslines and hooks. What more could you ask for?

[Audio] Villa’s ‘If I’

Villa

Some neat analog Disco for you right now in the form of the forthcoming new single from Belgian duo Villa. Released later this month with reMixes from the likes of MiGHty mOUse, The Shoes and Borussia, If I, is the follow up to their single Mint of earlier this year and nicely coincides with the release of their reMix of Röyksopp & Susanne Sundfør’s Running To The Sea.

If typical recent Villa fashion, If I displays an undulating waling bassline and some raw sounding drums. The sparse track slowly builds itself along it’s three and a half minute length, each section of the song adding a new synth line of Disco lick, until the track is a vintage synth workout and you can;t help but like. The slightly cautious vocal does it’s job, but never matches the infectious Disco insanity of the music, still it serves as a nice compliment to the track though.

[Audio] Maya Jane Coles reMixes Bonobo’s ‘First Fires’

Bonobo

The latest slice of all-encompassing musical warmth coming from the queen of all things Deep and Techy, Maya Jane Coles, comes in the form of this reMix of Ninja Tune’s finest Bonobo’s, Grey Reverend featuring, First Fires. The ghostly and bassy original comes from Bonobo’s recent The North Borders album. The track serves as the album’s intro and takes on a whole new life in Coles’ hands.

The vocal croon of the song is actually quite well suited to Coles’ smokey take on House, it’s low tones acting as another instrument in MJC’s deep arsenal. Capturing the intensity and atmosphere of First Fires, Maya looses none of it’s emotional resonance, if anything she adds to the tracks mood with a plethora of warm, rounded synths and grumbling basses. All set to a nice shuffling UK House beat. Sink into this one.

[Download] Say Yes Dog’s ‘A Friend’ and ‘Around My Neck’

Say Yes Dog

Dutch-based ElectroPop trio Say Yes Dog appear to be on a mission to get well and truly stuck in our heads. Permanently. Their post-Hot Chip Quirk-Pop is instantly likable and can be found on their recently released début EP, A Friend, from which we have two track right here. At times the tend to veer a little to far into the Chip’s established territory, in almost a homage style, but mostly it’s gets away with it due to an abundance of fun.

The EP’s title track, A Friend, gets particularly Chippy toward the end, but matins it’s own identity with it’s plinky-plonky snyths and delicious dancefloor beats. It’s mixture of melancholic croon and chirpy melodies actually working really well. Light, and funky, and ultimately feel-good, A Friend’s brand of SynthPop is just hard not to like. Around My Neck is similar in vein, albeit slightly more introspective. Electric piano led, Around My Neck warms things up with some buzzing synths and excitable rhythms, which seems to temper the suspiciously gloomy subject matter. We expect Say Yes Dog will be one of those bands that generates a lot of hype in the coming months, they’ve just got that vibe about them.
