[Audio] Todd Terje’s ‘Spiral’/’Q’

Todd Terje

The Cosmic Disco champion who only thinks big, Todd Terje, is back with two brand new tunes on his new single. We knew a new epic release was due this week, we weren’t prepared for just how SynthWave the single’s lead track, Spiral is though. It’s pretty amazing, alongside it’s B-side, Q, it represents over twenty minutes of blissful retro synth Disco that it’s hard not to loose yourself in. The man’s working on his début full length record, due next year, and these two tracks have us more excited than ever for it’s release.

Spiral is really, really, SynthWave. Surprisingly so for someone so knows for quirky, Scandinavian Cosmic Disco. But Spiral is an 80s soundtrack masterpiece. With a pumping bassline and starlight arpeggios, Spiral builds up a tension, adding vintage synth stabs to the mix until the track pauses briefly for a big drop, then slams on the accelerator with a massive synth riff a thick chords. It’s B-side, Q, is a little more traditionally Terje. Cowbells and quirky, reedy, synth hooks create that tundra sound we are so used to from him. Hypnotic and fun, Q proves Norwegian Cosmic Disco can’t be beat.

[Download] Touch Tone reMixes Marlene’s ‘Bon Voyage’

Marlene

LA’s best-kept-secret (which, frankly, is a bit mean) Touch Tone graces us with another new reMix this week. His latest muse is Sweedish Pop singer Marlene, who recently released her début single, Bon Voyage. It’s Bon Voyage that Touch Tone reworks, sprinkling it with a little West Coast magic.

We’re not overly familiar with the original, it sounds a bit R&B influenced, including a half-decent Rihanna impersonation at times, but in Touch Tone’s care it becomes a storming beach House tune. Clean and snappy, with a Tropical edge, this reMix drifts into your speaks like a sea breeze, bring with it good-time and good-weather (both of which are, we presume, in abundance in LA). Chirpy little melodies play tastefully with a booming hook and razor sharp drums. Touch Tone delivers the goods once again.

[Audio] MiGHty mOUse & Monarchy’s ‘In Front Of Our Friends’

Monarchy Portrait for FMS, London, Nov 2010

Here’s one tune we’ve been eagerly awaiting for a while now. London’s Disco don MiGHty mOUse and Awesome faceless SynthPop duo Monarchy together on one track. Somewhat of a spiritual follow up to the mOUse’s reMix of Monarchy’s Disintegration, this tune delivers on the price of infectious Cosmic Disco and soaring Pop vocals at the same time as presenting one of the catchiest tracks either of them have released to date.

With a head nodding bass groove courtesy of MiGHty mOUse’s Du Tonc partner in crime, Matt Van Shie, the mOUse style Disco is infused with a brass section whose hook will literally be stuck in your head all day and all manner of sweeping synths. The perfect vintage dancefloor accompaniment for some heartfelt vocals. All-in-all, In Front Of Our Friends is really nice. Lyrically, musically, vocally, just nice. People don’t write enough nice music these days.

Mannequine & Jas Crew

Get ready for some summery vibes coming from the new release on Jerry Bouthier’s Continental Records stable. The release in question hails all the way from Switzerland and laid back Nu-Disco duo Mannequine team up with three piece Hip Hop outfit Jas Crew. it;s an unusual combination, but one that end’s up working really well. Tropical-Hop anyone?

The track’s called Bombay Night Story and it revels in it’s dual facets. Musically it’s filled to the brim with Island beats, steely purcussion, warm, nostalgic synths and a skippy little snare that add a little playful swing. Add to this some Swiss-rhymes with a hazy flow that finds a home in the beach party disco perfectly. Bouthier himself has worked up a cheeky little Club Dub of the track (available as a free Download) that brings all those beats, basslines and chords to the front, delivering hypnotic dancefloor groove, whist labelmates Shindu inject the track with some tough snyths and some lush 80s keys for something a little darker and deeper. Another interesting release from Continental.

[Audio] Lifelike’s ‘Night Patrol’

Lifelike

Night Patrol is the new single from the French House legend that is Lifelike. Released next month on his own label, Computer Science, Night Patrol is something to get excited about, as Lifelike originals come too far apart these days, although his collaboration with Tommi Bavo earlier this year was pretty awesome. So sit back an enjoy some of Lifelike’s sweet electronic sounds.

Laidback, smooth and utterly funky, Night Patrol sees Lifelike in familiar territory with slick beats, head nodding basslines and starlight arpeggios. Adding to the track’s atmosphere is a nice selection of police car sirens and general nocturnal street noise, giving the track an urban groove amongst it’s razor sharp nostalgic synths. Night Patrol is the perfect title for this one, load it up before heading out this weekend.

[Audio] Ceo’s ‘Whorehouse’

Ceo

Well, we didn’t think we’d be hearing anything new from Swedish Avant-Pop act Ceo (The Tough Alliance’s Eric Berglund) again, he kinda’ went quiet after the release of his début album, White Magic, but here we are with a brand new single, and news of a forthcoming sophomore album titled Wonderland, on Sincerely Yours/Modular. the track’s called Whorehouse, and it;s Poppy, Catchy and hilarious.

Riding over a stomping beat and a cavalcade of blippy synths, Ceo rocks a Beach Boys vibe with his vocal arrangement, keeping things light and Poppy whist he laments that he’s ‘locked inside a whorehouse’. The whole track is a wonderful and playful mix of infectious Pop and an experimental attitude. It’s bouncy, fun and painfully intelligent. A contradiction that we aren’t going to argue with.

[Download] ODahl’s ‘Look Out Lauren’

ODahl

Good times. ODahl’s back. The Sweedish master of Dreamwave and Nu-Disco turn his hand to some deep, pumping House with his latest tune, Look Out Lauren. ODahl’s release are too few and far between for our likening, but when does come along it’s usually pretty special, and Look Out Lauren is no different.

Playing with Lauren Hill’s vocals from, Doo Wop (That Thing), ODahl builds up a convincing tune and an utterly mesmerising multi-layered bass groove. While deep synths are flying all over the place a solid Chicago beat keeps things in place while the vocals, cut to perfection, inject the track with a little soul. A solid dancefloor weapon from the Robo-Disco Swede, made for either the club or the warehouse.

[Audio] Lazyboy’s ‘Pica Disco’

Lazyboy

The duo Lazyboy are far far from lazy, and to be honest, pretty far from being boys too. This team-up consists of our summer festival overlord, DJ and Sunday Best head honcho Rob Da Bank and London-based producer Dan Carey, a man who credits CSS, Lily Allen and Kylie Minogue amongst his musical conquests. Their new single, their first for years and years, Pica Disco, is set to inject a little Balearic sunshine into your winter (unless you live in Australia, in which case just chuck this in your hot weather jams pile, as you might chuck another shrimp on the you-know-what).

An artful mashup of Krautrock, Guitar funk and live dance beats, Pica Disco is a hypnotic groover which leans toward the Scandinavian end of Cosmic Disco, although slightly more Indified. Personally, we could have done with a little less guitar and some synths, but you know us, we’re picky as hell. Regardless, what you’ve got here is an infectious, rolling four minutes of good-time live Disco.
