The Young Punx Vs. Alizzz

Alizzz

Out today on Beatport is the latest in a string of blistering releases from London’s ElectroFunkinDiscoBreakin MofoHiFi. This time it the return of Alizzz, the Spanish producer who graced MofoHiFi with his Neon Lights EP earlier this year. His new EP is titled Loud, and is packed with smooth jams and Electro Boogie beats.

The Lead track, Loud, is chilled slice of electronic Funk. Sounding like a cross between 80s influenced Nu-Disco and sweet LA Funk in the vein of DâM-FunK. it comes complete with a reMix from London Italo-Disco-ElectroDirty Bass crew The Young Punx, which we can exclusively première right here, right now. The Punx bring a little of their Italo-Disco magic to the tracks shimmering melodies. Reining in the fluid groove of the original into a tight dancefloor monster, this reMix sets out to ignite your feet with a storming digital bassline and thick retro synth chords. One hundred percent robo-Disco with an ice, melodic, nostalgic sheen. Oh, and you know how much we love electro tom rolls? Well, this tune is loaded with them! When the original’s steel drums kick in, you’re in summer jam heaven.

Shit Hot SoundSystem’s new EP

shit-hot-soundsystem

London’s Nu-Disco rising star Shit Hot SoundSystem is gearing up for the release of a brand new EP in the coming months. Three new cuts of late night, summer fun Disco House await all who choose the Shit Hot Soundsystem road. This guys release just keep getting better and better.

The InYourLovin EP kicks off with it’s title track. InYourLovin is the epitome of Shit Hot SoundSystem. Walking the line between edit heavy Nu-Disco and the more electronics laden Dreamwave end of the genre InYourLovin rocks both sampled Disco riffs and lush retro synth work. It never feels over stuffed though, everything sits sweetly in the track and the result is dancefloor gold. 21st Century Disco. Late Night Club Night brings the synthier side of Shit Hot SoundSystem more to the fore and brings an Italo flavour to his work. A deep robotic groove with some majestic, cinematic orchestration lends the track an ominous, but hella funky, vibe. Once again, the Disco riffs and synths combine on the EPs remaining tune, Phosphenes, a breezy slice of party Nu-Disco. Phosphenes layers it’s bouncy groove with a serious vintage Italo riff which should seem out of place, but in fact fits right in the mix and makes this track something special. We’re really digging this direction for Shit Hot SoundSystem and looking forward to the EP release.

The Sound Of Arrows’ free reMix album

The Sound Of Arrows

Well this is an awesome mid-week treat! Sweedish, London based, ElectroPop superstars The Sound Of Arrows are giving away an entire albums worth of reMixes, for free. The eleven track collection covered reMixes and edits, some you’ll have heard before, some brand new, there’s even the Wonders B-side, Longest Ever Daydream, thrown in for good measure too.

The album covers the duo past few years of single, featuring work from the likes of Visitor, Tiësto and Gold Dust on reMix duties but our picks have to be The Knocks version of the single Wonders, which takes a glitchy Disco approach to the tune which soon descends into full-on Electro-House dancefloor power. The amazing Mille and his now legendary reMix of The Sound Of Arrows’ breakthrough hit Into The Clouds, to which he lands all of his emotional, ChipTune Dreamwave charm in the perfect combination of ElectroPop and synthetic dancefloor nostalgia and Chad Valley’s deep, atmospheric take on M.A.G.I.C.. Chad bring a sparse Chillwave flavour to the track, supplying one of the albums deeper moments as it slips into House territory. It’s a rad collection, and generous of the guys to give it away like this, being packed with class tunes.

An interview with Arnaud Rebotini/Black Strobe

Arnaud Rebotini

An imposing figure in electronic music, Arnaud Rebotini has seen it all. A legend amongst producers who has never been afraid to walk a different path, and the path Rebotini walks usually ends up being emulated by the masses a year or so later.  An analog experimentalist who has ploughed through EBM, Detroit Techno, Acid House, ElectroClash through to and French Electro and Disco leaving a trail of ground-breaking 12” in his wake.

Whether in his solo synthesizer noodlings or as part of ElectroClash come Electro-Rock pioneers Black Strobe, Rebotini continues to push boundaries and inform, rather then follow, current dance music, and even Indie,  trends. He’s latest output being a return to Black Strobe for an ungodly Electro/Swamp Rock hybrid that is as grimy as it is funky.

Amidst all this pioneering and ground-breaking, Arnaud took some time to chat with us about just where the madness comes from.

ER: So, I think you came onto our radar back in 1998/99 with Black Strobe and since then played around with electronic music styles both as Black Strobe and with solo releases. But we get the feeling there’s a lot more going on in your past. Can you fill us in on your musical background, what influenced you to start writing music, and what your musical journey to the point we are at now was?

AR: I starting music in Noisy band influence by band like The Jesus And Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth, after that I was singer in Death Metal band, in the same I’m starting electronic music, I released my first 12” around 1995 it’s pretty Experimental Techno. I was influence by early Warp Records and Detroit Techno. I always listen some very different kind of music, was I was teenager my favorite records was Herbie Hancock Head hunter, New Order’s Power, Corruption And Lies, and Muddy Waters: fathers and sons. I don’t thinks that’s changed that much.

ER: From the electronic side of things, as well as the obvious House influences, we hear a lot of old school EBM in your music. What electronic styles have influenced you over the years?

AR: I like all good electronic music, from early Electro Funk stuff, to old school EBM, Detroit Techno Chicago House and Krautrock have a great influence on me. And form Techno a mix between ambient Krautrock band like Cluster or Tangerine Dream and Disco.

ER: And the, of course, there’s the Southern Blues. Especially with the new releases there is a big Swamp Rock vibe going on. There’s a kind of darkness, a kind of seedy sexuality and a kind of lost souls feeling, that this kind atmosphere. When did you decide you wanted to try to combine that with electronic music, was it something you always had in mind?

AR: This sound come may because now I listen a lot of Nu disco stuff and southern rock and blues. At I think it’s really cool to mix it with disco. Like Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson have done in certain way. And the biggest success of Black Strobe are Italian Fireflies and I’m a man, so tried to mix its all in a on one and unique style.

♫ Black Strobe – Italian Fireflies

ER: When do you tell if a track is going to be a Rebotini track or a Black Strobe track?

AR: Rebotini is pure electronic music, and a solo project in studio and on stage. Black Strobe is a band and not only electronic music, you have drums, guitars, vocals.

ER: And your style switches from Bluesy to more electronic and back again. Does that happen organically, naturally, or do you set out to make a particular type of record?

AR: I think it came naturally it’s base on classical chords and melody, everybody all ready know it, and it was funny to me have no classical bluesy production, to make some kind of electronic Blues.

♫ Arnaud Rebotini – Few More Minutes Of Love

ER: So what’s the Black Strobe studio? Do you have a favourite bit of studio kit? Any favourite synths?

AR: I have a nice studio with a lot of hardware stuff, a lot synth, and effects. May be my favorite is one of my first synth, not the most rare, but probably the most versatile, and easy to carry for the live, it’s the Roland SH 101.

ER: If money was no object, what piece of studio gear would be your dream to own?

AR: Probably a Buchla 200 series.

ER: Your music particularly, in the electronic arena, lends itself well to a live situation. What’s your preference, live or studio?

AR: I like both. Studio is the composition and production time, you feel alone with the music. Live it’s the opposite it’s the execution time, and you feel close to the ground

♫ Black Strobe – White Gospel Blues (Extended Version)

ER: Speaking of playing live. Any crazy rock ‘n’ roll stories from your tour adventures?

AR: Playing live spending time on the road, waiting for the soundcheck, waiting for to play, waiting for the next gig. And for the rest what happened on tour stays on tour.

ER: Any nightmare shows? What’s the worst?

AR: I always forget my nightmares.

♫ Arnaud Rebotini – My Life In House Music

ER: What’s your breakfast preference? Cereal or a proper continental breakfast? Would your answer change the day after a show?

AR: My favorite Breakfast is the Proper English Breakfast! After a show I need bean eggs sausage and mushroom !

Casio Social Club’s ‘Crush’

When is a reMix not a reMix? How much of the original needs to remain intact for it to be a reMix, or how little should be there before you can claim it as an original tune, and sell it as such? It’s a debate we had on Twitter this weekend. Honestly we’re not sure, if the entire vocal of a track, verse, chorus, verse, chorus is present with a new backing, is that a reMix or an original? For now, we’re on the fence, but it is something that crosses our minds from time to time. A pertinent discussion as it turns out, as one of our favourite UK producers Casio Social Club, Mullet Records head honcho Justin Winks,  soon releases his track Crush.

The Jets 1985 hit Crush On You is one of our guilty pleasures, it always puts us in a good mood. It has graced these pages on more than one occasion, and reMix or not, we do love a good updating of the tune. Casio Social Club’s new version of the track, Crush,  is pure Electro Boogie joy with a Piano House injection. It’s got that Casio Social Club style we love so much, those retro beats and funky as hell digital bassline, here complimented by an infectious piano line and the sing-along catchiness that is Crush On You. Ahead of the release, Mullet are kindly giving away the Radio Edit of the track. This track is the epitome of summer DiscoPop fun, don’t worry about it, just enjoy.

Casio Social Club – Crush (Radio Edit)

Casio Social Club’s Crush is released 7th August as a Juno exclusive followed by worldwide release on the 14th via Mullet Records.

MiGHty mOUse reMixes Future Unlimited

future-unlimited

We do love a bit of Nashville ElectroPop duo Future Unlimited ‘round these parts. Particularly their track Golden, which, having graced these pages more than once, is one of our tunes of the year so far. So imagine our excitement then, when, from out of no-where, our favourite London cosmic Disco peddler MiGHty mOUse drops this massive new reMix of the tune. There may have been a “get in!” fist pump.

MiGHty mOUse’s take on the track is dancefloor gold. Mixing up a little Tropical percussion with some Sci-Fi synths and House piano kinda’ covers all the basses, and as he covers all the bases, he does it with style and flair. You can always tell a MiGHty mOUse tune over most Nu-Disco productions. Aside from the obvious studio skill, there’s a lot more going on in an MM track than you’d normally find, a lot more eclectic elements too. MiGHty mOUse seems to write what feels right, rather than what the scene demands, and whereas most producers would claim a similar notion, MM’s track always feel refreshing. Take this tune, there’s actually quite a Dubby sound going on in the background, a few echoes, deep basses, that give it another unique twist, along with an infectious as hell percussive lead line. MiGHty mOUse’s intelligent Disco in combination with Golden’s anthemic vocals works even better than we’d hoped.

Golden is taken from Future Unlimited’s EP, out now.

Russ Chimes’s ‘Back 2 You’ video

Here’s the video for Russ Chimes’ latest massive tune Back 2 You. A big tune requites a big video.

The clip was written and directed by Alex Nicholson at Meat Grinder Films. There’s wandering around London involved, I’m not sure if there’s a plot, I was too busy rocking out to the track.

Russ Chimes’ Back 2 You is released 30th July as a Beatport exclusive.

The Louder The Better’s ‘Voices’

The Louder The Better

The Louder The Better is the musical pseudonym of Andrew De La Fuente, La Dreamwave producer. He’s been getting a fair bit of hype in the last few months, deservedly too. His tunes perfectly capture the laid back LA groove, especially his latest jam, Voices.

With an undulating, rich bassline complimented bit little Disco licks, Voices is a perfectly balanced production. Capturing that mood of what everyone who doesn’t live in LA thinks LA is like, or at least the do if they listen to enough Dreamwave and Nu-Disco. This is a soulful slice of synthetic Disco, designed for partying in the sun, warm and inviting and ringing out with smooth melodies. The Louder The Better indeed!
