Mitch Murder’s ‘Traces To Nowhere’

Well, this is a nice surprise for a Friday. the bringing together of two of my favourite things in the world, Swedish SynthWave master Mitch Murder and David Lynch & Mark Frost’s early ‘90’s unsettling-fest Twin Peaks. Mitch’s new track is a love letter both to the show and to Angelo Badalamenti’s soundtrack.

Titled Traces To Nowhere (the title of the first, or second, episodes of the show’s first season, depending on your perspective on whether the feature-length pilot is counted as episode one), the track is an obvious homage to Badalamenti and Julee Cruise’s Falling, Twin Peak’s theme tune, but never attempts to replicate it. The track is more a cover version of a mood, an atmosphere, than any one piece of music. Building upon the same foundation of the shows soundtrack, Mitch takes those elements in his own direction, layering lush, haunting synths over a Trevor Jones soundtrack style bass. It will feel familiar, but at the same time brand new. Amazing work.

Pelerins

Pelerins are a duo from Istanbul who make some seriously funky ElectroPop. Infused with everything from Moog Funk to Nu-Disco, these guys are setting their sights on the more DiscoPop end of the spectrum, maybe even having a shot at Chromeo themselves.

They’ve got four un-mastered tracks up on SoundCloud, but even in this demo form, the tracks show off Pelerins’ sheer talent. these raw versions of their track are already head and shoulders above many producing a similar a style. In their masterful hands, the MiniMoog, the talkbox, the rich retro synths, all become something extra special. Their smooth blend of catchy ElectroPop and head nodding Disco and Funk is instantly infectious. From the get go you know you’re listening to something that you’ll be hearing a lot more from in the coming year. Our picks of their SoundCloud would have to be (gun to our head) Falling, a driving DiscoPop tune that mixes up the best Pelerins has to offer, call-an-response talkbox action, wicked Disco licks, stabbing retro synths and a butt shaking groove. Also Is This Love?, a slicker and more nostalgic affair that seems Pelerins show off more of their Dreamwave side with impassioned vocals playing against an biting synthetic Disco soundtrack. You absolutely must check out Pelerins. Turkey’s in the house!

Visitor reMixed by Lifelike

So as we enter the final approach to the release of Visitor’s long, long, long awaited new double A-side single, Coming Home/RNB, it time for the trickle of reMixes to begin. And there’s a lot to look forward to, with work from Viceroy, FM Attack, Bestrack and SymbolOne incoming. But first up is this reMix of Coming Home from French Touch pioneer Lifelike.

this was actually out first taste of the track, it was featured back in the June 2011 edition of Fear Of Tigers’ The Guestlist. Coming Home is an epic ElectroPop anthem to begin with, so the addition of solid dancefloor knowledge from one of the scenes leading lights cannels that uplifting energy straight to the dancefloor. Built around of of Lifelike’s trademark big hooks and a rolling bassline the reMix does a neat job of transferring the tracks euphoria to a peak time dancefloor. Kinda’ excited to hear the rest!

Comtron

Rimeroni Vumani, Rimmer London and now Rimmer Veeman. Rimeroni, one third of Lé Lé, is a man of many names. Veeman comes into play in his new project Comtron. Alongside Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig (himself a musical chameleon, here going under Bas Bron, probably best knows as Seymour Bits) Veeman has just released an album of analog Electro goodness. Rimmer London has always been a favourite of ours, a pioneer of the analog Disco sound, so we’re expecting great things from Comtron.

Comtron’s 099 album is a space age, synthetic, oddessy that walks the thin line between Moroder Disco and Electro Funk, with just a hint of old school EBM and Acid. Robotic, synthetic, Funk prevails throughout the album. The B-Boy beats, pulsating basslines and stabbing House-like synth riffs are relentless in every track, from the frantic warehouse vibe of Get to the surprise KMFDM-esque growl of Corrupted. The albums standouts have to be Fraud, an epic slice of galactic Disco that pairs dark Boogie beats with a cosmic lead line for a unexpectedly euphoric result. Bust, which layers classic House hooks over a brooding, burbling Electro groove and ignites comparisons to Warp Records’ very early output. And ¥€$, the records opener. ¥€$ is definitely the track to get you hooked, both majestic and some how stripped down and raw, this is analog Disco at it’s best. Pure synths. If you like robotic sounding Disco or old school Electro, Comtron’s new release is really worth a look.

Housquare’s ‘Rubis’

Here’s the latest in French outfit Housquare’s continuing quest to bring the ‘90’s back right in-your-face. Now on Cheap Thrills Housquare have an even larger platform for their unapologetically Chicago House sound that they like to mix up with contemporary production.

Their new track, Rubis, serves as a bridge between their Old Gem EP and their forthcoming new release, Subshine, but as a stand alone it sums up everything we love about Housquare perfectly. There’s classic breakbeats, rave stabs, House piano, and that kind of dark ominous undertone to the track that all the best early ‘90’s House tunes had. Housquare has the early ‘80’s House sound down pat, there’s actually few who do it better.

Southern Shores’ new EP

One again Cascine sends us the most beautiful music. Toronto’s Southern Shores are gearing up for the release of their new EP, New World. The first track from the EP to surface is New Love, a track that perfectly encompasses the breezy summer vibe of the EP.

From the EP opener Marazul, you are treated to some of the most blissful, engaging sounds this year. At times bordering on Ambient, but always enslaved to the undulating Balearic rhythms that run throughout. When it’s not being all chill-out atmospheric the EP shows off Southern Shores injection of early ‘90’s R&B into their music, tracks like Sankasa and Purple Sky let you easily slip into a Soul state of mind. New Love is actually one of the standouts of this sun-kissed collection, drawing in the influences of the rest of the EP into one neat package. Hazy tropical sounds and rolling Chill-Pop abound as reverb soaked samples and comfortable beats wash in and out of the track like waves.

The internet seems to hate it, but I can’t figure out why. It’s actually pretty standard video fare these days. I wonder if the internet would like it better if we said Romain Gavras directed it rather than Claire Boucher herself?
