Feels Good is a definite contender for one of the freshest synth leads of the year. It’s should be understated just how good the lead is in this tune, catchy, soaring and pretty emotionally resonant. It’s the track’s ‘killer app’ which, when used in conjunction with a pounding House beat, a Moroder-esque Disco bassline and layers upon layers of cosmic synth work, provides the prefect partner for Saint Saviour’s Sci-Fi vocals. Truly epic stuff. Space-age retro Disco at it’s finest, with just a hint of a House vibe. MiGHty mOUse’s turn at the helm humanises the robo Disco somewhat. London’s Disco don delivers an organic Disco-House cut that is pretty irresistible. With an infectious piano hook, deep Housey bass and body moving percussion, anyone not compelled to dance to this tune is probably not human.

We dropped Aeroplane’s reMix of our second favourite Giorgio Moroder song, From Here To Eternity (MB Disco having already released a reMix package of our favourite, E=mc², great minds an all…), last week. Now the single is out in the wild take a listen to the released other killer tune, a reworking of the song from Belgium’s finest ATTAR!.
ATTAR!’s take on the tune is pretty different from Vito’s. Vintage analog Disco abounds, slickly combined with a summery Tropical vibe. The track is actually a big of a schizophrenic beast, at times the Island percussion and chimed lead are total sunshine Indie-Electro, and at other times these big SynthWave chords power in morphing the tune into a dark Electro growler, and then there’s moments of pure House. Maybe in lesser hands this would have been a confused mess, but the many facets of the track are so skilfully handled by ATTAR! that strange bedfellows sound perfectly suited to one another. Just wait for the soaring solo to kick in. ATTAR! has done an amazing job here, creating a reMix both danceable and rousing. And, yes, it’s that picture of Moroder again, what?

So first MB Disco take my favourite Giorgio Moroder track, E=mc², and release a bunch of rad reMixes of it. Then, when they decide to go for round two, they pick my second favourite Moroder track, which is 1977’s From Here To Eternity as the subject of this new reMix collection. Not only that, but alongside the likes of ATTAR!, Compuphonic and Fusty Delights there’s an Aeroplane reMix! What more could I ask for?
Vito drops something really special here, It’s like two generation of Disco geniuses, a meeting of minds. Punchy, infectious bass, Aeroplane’s take on Moroder style arpeggio Disco and a percussion fuelled beat give Moroder’s hushed robotic vocals a new lease of life. In 1977 this was the future, now, in 2012, Aeroplane is making sure the track is still just as cosmic and Sci-Fi as it ever was. Amazing work. And, yes, we always use the same picture of Giorgio, because it;s amazing!

This week German Electro Disco don Kris Menace released an album of collaborations, Features, that included a track with ElectroClash icon Miss Kittin. Hide is a hypnotic slice of AcidPop brilliance that has just been released in video form.

Remember Australian SynthWave master Jordan F’s Under The Sun? The man dropped it early last month, a shimmering piece of beautiful, introspective retro synth work. Well, now the track has been recreated and remoulded as a stunning slice of vintage SnythPop with a little vocal help from London’s Le Cassette.
Vocals take the track to a whole new level, especially in Le Cassette’s authentically 80s style. The moody, enigmatic, vocals work as a nice juxtaposition to Jordan’s typically upbeat, nostalgic, music. This combination of Le Cassette’s croon and Jordan’s sparking aspirational SynthWave ends up hitting just the right point for perfect 80s Pop, melancholy with a hint of optimism, exemplified by the best Pop from that era. We’ve been dying to hear Jordan team up with a vocalist for a while now, and we haven’t been disappointed.
So, we’ve all got pretty used to Australian songstress Chela over the summer. Partly due to her appearance on Clubfeet’s Heartbreak, but mostly from her turn as the voice of Goldroom’s summer destroying Fifteen, one of the biggest tunes of they year. Now it’s time to check out some of her own output as she released two singles, Full Moon and Plastic Gun.
Released yesterday, Full Moon feels a few months too late, it would have been a stonking summer anthem. it’s got all the best qualities of smooth beach part Disco, but with a hazy shimmer that feels pretty unique. The track’s pulsating cosmic Disco and funk bassline are perfectly married to Chela’s vocals, that flip from ethereal to rowdy. It’s a track that sticks in your head for ages. Plastic Gun bring s more live sound to Chela’s repertoire. A reverb washed Indie-Disco jam with an energetic garage feel and a hint of Ladyhawke going on. Chela’s definitely got out interest.
Toby Tobias’ The Feeling, slow groove Disco club smash for a few years back, has been given a fresh new makeover from Nude Disco and Paul Harris. Both these guys have a long history in dance music so handing them something like Kathy Diamond’s smooth vocal on this tune is bound to produce something sweet.
Fast forwarding the track four years the duo give this tune a shiny Disco-House makeover. Keeping a lot of the Disco groove of the original, Vern & Harris drop a kicking new House beat and layers upon layers of sharp synth work. The soulful vocal takes on a new energy coupled with this new backing, which when added to the intricate synths, makes for a track you could get lost in on the dancefloor. We love these guys reMixes.
Enigmatic London ElectroPop duo Avec Sans are back with a new tune. We’ve been eager for more since they dropped their first original tune, Heartbreak Hi, we’ve had our fingers crossed for these guys that it wasn’t a one-off, or a fluke. Those fears have just been assuaged.
The Answer is Avec Sans new tune, and with it came a press release that finally gives us in insight into who these two are. Alice Fox and Jack St James. A Trinidadian international man of mystery and a Mancunian ex-badass, both of whom have done the rounds, and paid their dues, in various bands and musical projects, make up Avec Sans and the background in gigging bands shines though in The Answer. If you said to me that this was a track created by a guy who has experimented with many different forms of electronic music and a vocalist who cut her teeth on the Indie band circuit, I would say that’s exactly what it is. Intricately crafted dance music with a passionate, live, vocal. It’s an anthemic slice of ElectroPop with a real rush of energy for the chorus. The single is flipped with a reMix from Bill Posters and Will Power, why more and more electronic artists feel the need to get uninspired lowest-common-denominator dance music reMixes done I’ll never understand. the reMix is good at what it does, I suppose, but what it does is a bit blah and by-the-numbers. Skipping to the end; Heartbreak Hi definitely wasn’t a fluke, and Avec Sans are definitely amazing..
Sometimes, just sometimes, we get an email that takes us completely by surprise. Someone come from out of the blue with a release that makes us wonder why we haven’t been following this artist for years. We’ve just had one of those emails. It came from Exeter based producer Ogre (no relation to Skinny Puppy’s Ogre) and after a little flattery he dropped his latest release, 194, on us. We were pretty blown away.
You may be familiar with some of Robin Ogden’s previous work, specifically his reMix of Robortom and Au Reviour Simone’s Paganini Rocks under the moniker Monster! Monster!. In-case you were wondering, Ogre is nothing like that. What Ogre is, is the soundtrack to the dark middle instalment of a movie trilogy, a soundtrack to the inevitable robot uprising and a pounding electronic accompaniment to your very survival. Ogre’s 194 walks the line between retro, 80s soundtrack influenced, SynthWave or Outrun Electro and distorted Elektro Industrial. The opening salvo, Gongola, exemplifies this and wraps it up in a jackhammer dance beat, before the album finds it’s footing as a collection of atmospheric synthetic moods. 2019 feels like the set up of the album proper with traditional soundtrack elements like string and horn sections, playing against frantic arpeggio and marching drums. Imaginary soundtrack albums such as this need a musical narrative, and 2019 is where this one starts. By the time Cold Protocol, reminiscent of Daft Punk’s Tron soundtrack meeting Tengerine Dream and the dark tones of Street Legal have passed you get the idea that this narrative isn’t an easy one. Our heroes, if there are any, are in for a rough time. Of course, with titles like 2019 and V.K., you know that a fair amount of Ogre’s influence for 194 comes from BladeRunner, and Vangelis’ legendary soundtrack, but whilst there are moments during the album when that is very apparent. The similar sounds and tones to Vangelis’ soundtrack never feel copycat, more homage. If anything, much of 194 sounds like the Blade Runner soundtrack’s evil twin. The soundtrack to a BaldeRunner sequel when LA is invaded by a replicant army maybe? Some of the highlights of the albums whopping 18 tracks include the soaring synths of Sniper One, the futuristic Italo of Stairwell and the film, sorry, album’s End Titles, which actually work as the perfect closer to the whole story. Orge had done, with 194, what many try to achieve, but few actually pull off this well. A self contained audio story, one which feels natural when listened to in it’s entirety, and when it’s finished it does feel like there is a satisfying conclusion to this musical tale. So do yourself a favour, pick up 194 and set aside 40 minutes to experience the whole journey.
