[Audio] Mild Peril’s ‘Unknown Zones’

Mild Peril

Chris Flatline has been a staple of the London Italo/EBM scene for years now. Whether promoting, DJing and producing, he’s always brought with him interesting futuristic beats and Sci-fi synth. His current musical project is Mild Peril, melodic and atmospheric Space Italo, the moniker under which he’ll be releasing a collection of tracks from he past three years titled Voyager 2010 in the new year. As a prelude to this album, Mild Peril is releasing a free (for a limited time) EP of evocative and involving synthesizer music, Unknown Zones, First Survey.

First up we should say that this is an EP you should give yourself some time with. Set aside forty minutes with this EP and some decent headphones and just sink into it. There’s no throwaway buzz track or this weekly floorfiller here, this is intricately crafted electronic music that can carry you with it on it’s cosmic voyage and that’ll stay with you for hours after you’ve finished listening. The record is essentially carved out into three zones, each one quite an epic synthesized experience, separated by three Orbs that serve to transition from one zone to the next. Mostly lush, atmospheric soundscapes, the Orbs not only cleanse the audio pallet but create a feeling of movement between the more recognisable tracks. Alpha Zone is classic Spacesynth with an analog twist, introducing itself with a beautiful, haunting electric piano and a future noir vibe before launching into an robo Italo beast with a wealth of musical nuances. Clocking in at just under ten minutes, Gamma Zone, is the biggest voyage that awaits the listener. Spanning a variety of moods Gamma Zone delivers a synthesizer narrative with rising and falling beats and some truly emotive lead lines. The EP’s climax is, arguable, Delta Zone. The closes thing to SynthWave on the EP, Delta Zone’s rapid fire arpeggios and twisting solos take it truly into Outrun territory, but it retains the analog feel and keeps both it’s uniqueness, and it’s place amongst the EP, providing the exciting pinnacle of the release. Unknown Zones, First Survey is most definitely an EP that should be checked out by lovers of both Italo & SynthWave, and of synthesizer music in general. Make sure that you give it the attention it deserves, you will be rewarded.

[Video] Queen Of Hearts’ ‘Warrior’

Stop what you’re doing, there’s a new Queen Of Hearts video in town. The amazing Warrior has only gone and got itself all visual.

The clip’s directed by Elliott Morgan and sees The Queen deftly conveying the rousing bombast of the track. Which is still produced by Diamond Cut, and still amazing.

Queen Of Hearts’ Warrior is released on 2nd December.

[MP3] Awkoder’s ‘Your Love’

Awkoder

There’s a bit of a trend amongst SynthWave producers recently. More and more of then are delivering vocal tracks, whether collaborations or having a crack at vox themselves, we’ve seen a few of the scene’s heavyweights drop vocal fuelled masterpieces recently. It a trend we approve of here, and one that sees French master of atmospheric SynthWave Awkoder up next, as he joins forces with fellow Frenchman Phlore for Your Love, released this week.

Your Love ends up being one of this month’s nicest surprises. Awkoder handles a sung track with ease, his right, multi-layered synth sounds flowing in total support of Phlore’s impassioned vocal. These two obviously have a great love, and more than that a great understanding, of 80s Pop and why 80s Pop worked so well as they incorporate a nostalgic tone into this powerful ElectroPop tune. Mixing it up with a few Nu-Disco style flourishes and a screaming solo at the track’s climax, Awkoder and Phlore has hit on a definite winner right here.

[Audio] Eumig & Chinon reMix Viceroy

Viceroy

Last week we previewed for you the new tune from San Francisco’s Viceroy and New York Disco Pop outfit Ghost Beach, While We’re In Love. Now check out one of the reMixes from the just release single package. This one comes from Danish Dreamwavers Eumig & Chinon.

It;s actually been a fair amount of time since we heard from these guys, it must be coming up to a year since they released anything,. We though they dropped of the map, but we’re pleased to discover they haven’t, and are still rockin’ just as hard as ever. If this is a comeback reMix, they comeback hard. Laying heavy Daft Punk-esque vocoders, chainsaw Disco synths and a juggernaut slap bass groove. All complementing Ghost House’s anthemic vocal to from a huge, peak time, Electro-Disco monster that is guaranteed to destroy dancefloors wherever it drops. A very welcome back to Eumig & Chinon.

[MP3] NeonFlashDrive’s ‘Kimberly’s theme’

NeonFlashDrive

Short but sweet. That’s how we’d describe the new one from British SynthWaver NeonFlashDrive. What we like about NeonFlashDrive, other than the razor sharp production, is that this guy always writes tunes that are specifically about something, in this case Kimberly Hart, the Pink Ranger. Yes, you read that right. We kinda’ see his point.

Kimberly’s Theme boasts NeonFlashDrive’s typical clean mix and gently increasing layers of arpeggios to create an emotional high. It walks the line, in that way that Futurecop! do, between being obviously 80s influenced, but sounding very modern. There’s no classic analog grit here, it’s all pure, piercing, digital synth goodness. NeonFlashDrive skilfully handles multiple synth lines throughout the track, there’s enough going on here to sound muddy in another producers hands, and keeps things bright and shiny as the track builds towards it’s emotional rush.

Let Em Riot – SlashWave (EP)

November sees the release of the new EP from Californian Indie-Electro outfit Let Em Riot. The SlashWave EP delivers five tracks of stunning, emotional, Dreamwave Pop.

Ranging from upbeat floorfillers to impassioned ballads, SlashWave draws on bitter-sweet nostalgia and new romanticism set amidst a hazy retro 80s ElectroPop soundtrack made contemporary with Indie sensibilities.

SlashWave was written and produced by Let Em Riot’s Alan Oakes, mixed by Chris Fudurich (Jimmy Eat World, Nada Surf, RX Bandits), and mastered by Bob DeMaa (Semisonic, The Rembrandts). The cover features artwork. By SBJKT.

Let Em Riot is the brainchild of California based ElectroPop producer Alan Oakes. Drawing on a wealth of influences spanning 80s SynthPop to LA Dreamwave, Let Em Riot produce catchy, danceable retro Pop that speaks to the listener with an emotional resonance rare in synth music. With an effortless Indie cool, Let Em Riot, whist at their core a SynthPop act, speaks to everyone who gets drawn into their hazy, nostalgic, music. Now the SlashWave EP should set them on a course to take their DreamPop to a larger audience.

[Audio] Sally Shapiro reMixed by Com Truise

Sally Shapiro

This is one of those track that just reading the title gets you excited.  Sally Shapiro reMixed by Com Truise! If ears watered with appetite, like your mouth, then the thought of  Sally and Johan Agebjörn’s blissful ElectroPop reworked by the master of SynthWave would leave drool on our lobes. Which is a pretty gross analogy, so let’s just say it’s a pretty exciting thought. OK.

The track is ace, Com’s reMix of the new Shapiro single, What Can I Do?, takes a funky 80s stab at the track. the Truise way, which is Boogie fuelled beats and basslines mixed with more cosmic, esoteric synth work is very much present here with a digital bass powering the track giving the rest of Com’s sound pallet free reign to swirl in and out of Sally’s vocals. The contrast between the thick Electro Funk and the ominous vocal manipulation & atmospheric synths make for a track destined for both the feet and the head.  Amazing retro synth goodness.

♫ Sally Shapiro – What Can I Do? (Com Truise reMix)

Sally Shapiro’s What Can I Do? is released November 20th on Paper Bag Records followed by the new album, Somewhere Else 26th February next year with contributions from Anoraak, Le Prix and Electric Youth.

[Audio] Pandolfo & Del Gado’s ‘Better Than Me’

Pandolfo & Del Gado

Just released on the awesome Mullet Records is the Better Than Me single from Italian groovers Pandolfo & Del Gado. Roping in the soulful tones of Orlando Johnson for vocal duties, here’s the Radio Edit of the track to whet your appetites.

Better Than Me is laid back Boogie in the extreme. The two Italians dish out massive helpings of deep Disco flavours, pulsating synthetic bass and a bit of a Chicago vibe with the percussion and digital keys. The track mostly rests on Johnson’s vocal though, smooth as silk with a perfect soulful House tone. The single comes backed with reMixes from Elijah Collins, Casio Social Club and Stephane Deschezeaux. Excellent stuff!
