[Download] Disco Socks’ ‘Sock Drawer Secrets #3’

It’s not often we cover collections of Edits on these pages, the odd one or two here and there when they impress us, but collection we generally pass over (mainly because we get confused as to who gets the article image and purchase links!), but this new three tracker from London’s DiscoSocks definitely bears mentioning. These three new Edits from the man make up his just released Sock Drawer Secrets #3 EP which, as the title would suggest, is his third release of Edit secret weapons. All three are pretty stunning, here are our favourite two for the EP.

The Three Degrees are first up here with their Giorgio Moroder produced hit Giving Up, Giving In. The original’s fuzzy synth grove is easy fuel for an Edit and DiscoSocks runs with it, layering the funk over a solid House beat. Giving the track a whole new lease of life with a decidedly clubby pump and a new arrangement that suddenly delivers a more dancefloor oriented journey, DiscoSocks has managed to retain the original’s slick Saturday night flavour whist dragging it into 2014. Fire Fox’s 1985 single Round Trip Ticket is up next, in it’s inception a slick 80s Soul Pop jam, loaded with synth funk goodness. Ripe for the editing definitely. In this case DiscoSocks knows just what to bring to the fore and what to drop back, driving the B-Boy beat and synth stabs, along with the vocals, to headline the track making it sound as fresh as ever. [Download] Fear Of Tigers’ ‘I Am Dog’

This week Fear Of Tigers launches his new website with some lovely new music for us. Who knows what occurring with Mr. Tigers long awaited sophomore album? But the man isn’t leaving us in the lurch while we wait with this steady drip of massive tunes. The curiously titled (although, Mr. Tigers have always been one for esoterically names tracks) I Am Dog is his latest.

Right from the opening bard of I Am Dog, with is shimmering, retro synths and hammerfall drums, you know your in for a frantic, big room, ride; and post drum fill, when the track kicks in, all your expectations are met. Ringing leads, shifting beats and an amped up 80s bassline power the tune along at high-octane speeds. the soulful vocal snatches and dreamy sax serve to temper the nervous energy of the track, smoothing everything out into an intricate dancefloor monster.

[Audio] Mr. Falcon’s ‘Landing Lights’

Yippee kiyay Mr. Falcon! There’s some sweet Deep House in town! Just released on Nurvous Records is the début single from Mr. Falcon, a duo consisting of French Express co-founder Blueshift and fellow Philadelphia resident Ily. The single is called Landing Lights which, once you hear the track, seems quite fitting and comes equipped with a reMix from Rhythm Operator.

Landing Lights deftly mixes in some slick 80s lead lines into an undulating Deep House groove. Pulsating, almost Italo, synths craft out a Sci-Fi warehouse vibe from punchy bass and haunting pads. Riding a booming kick drum, the robotic dance hits hard, infecting your brain with a Euro meets Chicago collision will leave you wanting more. We are already eagerly awaiting Mr. Falcon’s next work.

Having pride of place on Eskimo Recordings‘ latest compilation album, The Blue Collection, is Greek SynthWaver come Disco demon NTEIBINT. This track, Never Without You, not only features on the collection, but is also the lead track of his forthcoming EP. It genre spanning four minutes of hazy good times.

Featuring vocals from Stella, Never Without You is a hard beat to pin down. A slo-mo Indie-Dance groove, not quite Disco but getting there, underpins the tune; which is part ElectroPop, part Pop House with a solid authentic Nu-Disco flavour. Torontonians sure do like their Disco ecclectic and experimental. One of the city’s biggest proponents of funky wizardry is Hemingway, who has just released the track Chew as part of the compilation album Amicus Curiae 2014. I hope you’ve got your intelligent listening hat on, ‘cos this one goes a bit freestyle.

Pairing popping Sci-Fi synths, with jazzy muted trumpet and a shuffling rhythm, Hemingway mixes up resounding Synth Funk with smokey Jazz to retro future effect. Utilising an infectious slo-mo Disco groove to draw you in, Hemmingway slip in an out of backroom freeform and Cosmic madness with relative ease, creating a mood of unexpected delights. The sound pallet alone bears repeated listening.
