A Girl Called Ruth

A Girl Called Ruth

A Girl Called Ruth is a, sort of Welsh, multi-national singer/songwriter from London just starting her big push. A lot of young female singers have passed through these pages on their was to the charts, or the bin, and we’d like to think we have developed a knack for spotting the ones who have a fair chance of ‘making it’. We’d say A Girl Called Ruth has a better chance than most, her début single ‘You I See’ is catchy and slick. It’s got that standard mid-tempo safe Pop feel, but is youthful enough not to get lost in the noise.

You can catch the video for ‘You I See’ here, it’s good track that has really grown on us, but it’s a bit too Folk Pop for these column inches (yes, we do occasionally like music that falls outside this webzine’s remit), however there are two pretty dope reMixes we think out reader will dig. Our favourite is a smooth Disco-House mix from Young Favourite, who works the vocal perfectly, switching the mood from introspection to out-and-out anthem and alongside Young Favourites dance groove A Girl Called Ruth, or Ruth as we are going to be calling her from now on, starts to sound a bit Sophie Ellis-Bextor, no bad thing. Nixon offers up a warp bassed breakbeat track with an ominous tone. Whilst, obviously, we’d be secretly hoping that A Girl Called Ruth busts out some ElectroPop for her next single, in general, A Webzine Called Electronic Rumors quite likes this.

Simian Mobile Disco’s ‘Your Love Ain’t Fair’ video

Still love Simian Mobile Disco, despite it not being 2007 anymore, the new stuff is really underrated.

Waze & Odyssey

Waze & Odyssey

Waze & Odyssey (revealed to be Retro/Grade’s Serge Santiago and Firas Waez from Caze Nova), ‘mystery’ Disco-House producers who exactly no people cared about the identity of, have had their pretty awesome track, ‘Love That (Burns Hot Enough)’, kicking around the internet for a while now. It’s a nice mix of Garage, Disco and House that could, with the right promotion, blow up this Autumn when it is released. The single is dropping on Waze & Odyssey’s own new label W&O Street Tracks, a vinyl only operation to keep an eye on.

To celebrate the launching of their imprint, Waze & Odyssey are giving away this brand new tune, How It’s Gotta’ Be’. It’s a tune that continues this duos mission to merge some of the funkier styles. There;s not much Disco in there, but it’s a beautiful combination of Chicago House and Garage. Waze & Odyssey have laid down a solid Garage rhythm section, a House groove and then just let some rich strings lush things up a bit. A hypnotic and involving track that has us celebrating W&O Street Tracks’ launch with them.

Jupiter reMixed by DiscoRazor

Jupiter

The Jupiter momentum just doesn’t quit, it seems like every other day we have something awesome about the French ElectroPop duo to write about. In this instance fellow Frenchman and master of Disco and SynthWave DiscoRazor has turned his reMixing attentions to Jupiter’s ‘Hula Hoop’ from the recently released eleven tracks of pure awesome they call ‘Juicy Lucy’.

The original is pretty indicative of Jupiter. ElectroPop with a Disco flavour with a slight Indie vibe and some melodically chopped up vocals. DiscoRazor strips out the Indie guitar and replaces it with some seriously smooth Disco with a bit of a House edge to it. DiscoRazor shows his SynthWave side in the track too, with a twisted synth solo that leads right into a slick piano breakdown. DiscoRazor has delivered a slick carefree tune packed with Funk that perfectly compliments Jupiter’s original whist making it slightly more palatable to late night dancefloors. You could od a lot worse than investigating DiscoRazor’s recently released ‘Golden Night’ EP.

Surrender!’s ‘Volute’

Surrender!

Turkish producer Surrender! is about to drop a brand new single in advance of his forthcoming album. Coming out next month on the consistently Funky La Bombe, ‘Volute’ and it’s B-Side ‘Fast Days’, show off two different facets of Surrender!’s infectious groove.

‘Volute’ is a twisting, cosmic, number. With heavy, pulsating, Funk foundations a spacey mixture of Italo and Cosmic Disco play around the track, arpeggios flying, to create something that is both dancefloor addictive and space-age atmospheric at the same time. The flip side, ‘Fast Days’ breaks out the House piano and some massive synth stabs. It’s a driving mixture of Disco and House which is pure uplifting party starter. Both tracks have got a nice grunge o their production, they’re not too clean, not too polished, which (in our opinion) always works better on the dancefloor. Get down and dirty with these tunes! Surrender!’s already getting some play from major names including being part of Digitalism’s new DJ-KICKS album. We’d definitely predict big things for this guy.

Monitor 66’s ‘Her Bells’

Monitor 66

This week the generally pretty awesome Silhouette Music, released ‘Her Bells’, the new single from Swedish trio Monitor 66. Getting their digital bass warmed up for the summer Monitor 66 have followed up their track ‘Triscuits’, which both The Magician and Zimmer rocked into their mixtapes with a track that is even more sweet.

‘Her Bells’ combines the smoothness of LA Disco with an energetic Italo flavoured Funk bassline. It’s a warm and inviting Dreamwavey Disco tune without a care in the world. While the track is laden with lush pads, sparkling bells and a deep, deep beat, it’s that digital bass that is the real deal sealer here. Like an the blissful ramblings of a Funk robot, that bassline just speaks to us. Alongside Gary Baldi, The Legendary 1979 Orchestra roll up for reMix duties and take things even deeper, before adding some 808 percussion and light House piano for a real smooth old school Chicago feel, and they keep the bassline! Good Work!

letthemusicplay’ Don’t Weigh Me Down’

letthemusicplay

letthemusicplay are back, once again teaming up with Cardiff’s Until The Ribbon Breaks. The duo have released a new single, so soon after their ‘All I can Give You’ single. Only this time their new record is absolutely free. Check out ‘Don’t Weigh Me Down’ and it’s reMix.

We suspect that letthemusicplay are preparing themselves for festival season with these big, anthemic, hypnotic tracks. Acid riffs pile on high in a track that builds and builds while UTRB mantra floats repetitively on top, in a particularity Underworld-esque way. It’s a track to completely loose yourself in, both forward thinking and quite classic sounding, and one to drop when you’ve got the crowd nice and lubed up. letthemusicplay themselves have supplied the reMix, which brings a healthy dose of warp bass to the table. Both cut are very solid slices of classic Dance that can be fit in anywhere, but preferable in a field at 4am. Oh, and FYI, we couldn’t give a fuck who they are.

Moonlight Matters reMixed by Punks Jump Up

moonlight-matters

You can head over here for our waffle about Moonlight Matters and Gustraph’s new single, ‘Come For Me’. It’s a massive Pop track, with that twanging late ‘80’s digital bass and orchestral hits we love so much. The single is out today on Kitsuné Music, but if you’re just gagging to hear the reMix from London’s Punks Jump Up, well, you’re in luck aren’t you.

Punks Jump Up keep in touch with the late ‘80’s Pop ethos of the track but deconstruct the tune and reconstruct it in their own image. Awash with Electro Boogie, the reMix is a sweet mixture of House beats and B-Boy basslines. Punks Jump Up has also kept on working the orchestral hits, well, who wouldn’t? That would be just crazy. In keeping with the late ‘80’s vibe they’ve also added a little of their Acid tendencies with a burbling 303 hook running underneath that comes into it’s own on the big breakdown. As far as the reMixes go on the single, it’s definitely our favourite, a great addition to the package.
