Ready for something bassy and boomy? Here’s Belgian electronic Maestro A.N.D.Y.’s reMix of Anna Lunoe recent single Breathe. A.N.D.Y.’s giving the track away as he’s got a lot to celebrate. Being signed to Sony Music, handled by Live Nation and a string of festival appearances added up to a killer 2013 for the man. He’s particularly Belgian reMix is the perfect way to end the year.
Kicking off with a early Electro beat, loaded with B-Boy vibes, the track soon charges head first into the realms of mid-80s Belgian EBM. Clanging Industrial percussion and, metallic, sampled riffs conjure up a back-clad stomp which you would thing contrasted with the tracks House roots, or the the big piano House breakdowns in the reMix, but it really doesn’t. Add a sprinkling of Acidic burbling and you’ve got a melting pot of electronic awesome.

Hey readers. A couple of weeks ago my father passed away, you may have seen a lull in posts. When all was done and dusted I felt the need to do something, both to commemorate my Dad and to give a little to an organization that helps both sufferers and carers, especially at a time like Christmas. So X-Mas Rumors was born. Four artists from the label kindly gave me their time and talent (and hopefully had a little fun) cover four beloved Christmas tunes.

The EP is being released with a ‘pay what you want’ price mark, with 100% of the revenue going to the Alzheimer’s Society we’re hoping people are full of Christmas cheer and give generously.

Don’t Tell is the new single from dance music all-rounder Ben Mono. Out this week on Strictly Rhythm, the single features the vocals of renowned Rave voice Rachel Wallace and sees Mono continue along the path set out in his most recent releases into full-on UK Bass mode via Deep House.
Kicking off with some woozy keys, Don’t Tell brings with it everything you’d expect from a big, Garage influenced, floorfiller. Fit for dingy clubs or big festivals, Don’t Tell mixes up a little classic Rave in the riffs, a little UK Bass in the basslines and a whole heap of underground Jackin’ grooves. Wallace’s vocals sound classic as ever, as if lifted straight from a 90s Rave anthem and implanted into the bass heavy monster.

The latest slice of all-encompassing musical warmth coming from the queen of all things Deep and Techy, Maya Jane Coles, comes in the form of this reMix of Ninja Tune’s finest Bonobo’s, Grey Reverend featuring, First Fires. The ghostly and bassy original comes from Bonobo’s recent The North Borders album. The track serves as the album’s intro and takes on a whole new life in Coles’ hands.
The vocal croon of the song is actually quite well suited to Coles’ smokey take on House, it’s low tones acting as another instrument in MJC’s deep arsenal. Capturing the intensity and atmosphere of First Fires, Maya looses none of it’s emotional resonance, if anything she adds to the tracks mood with a plethora of warm, rounded synths and grumbling basses. All set to a nice shuffling UK House beat. Sink into this one.

Australian Disco duo The Swiss released their latest EP last week. The follow up to their Eloisa EP, and again unleashed via Kitsuné Music, Kiss To Kiss is a classy DiscoPop epic backed with four storming reMixes featuring works from names such as of Breakbot, Pyramid and Amtrac. It’s a pretty impressive package, with each version taking on a life of it’s own. You won’t find four cookie cutter Disco mixes here, each one has a very separate identity.
The original version of Kiss To Kiss is a lush and opulent affair. Rich in Cosmic Disco synths applied to a 70s Mirrorballed arrangement. Canadian singer Roxane Ashley Aiston (from Cordova’s amazing Paradigm) lends her sweet voice to the track, her vocals gliding across the track like silk, rising and falling with the track, melding with the think synths to create something both Funky and pretty cinematic. This is epic DiscoPop right here. Amtrac does an excellent job of taking that vocal line and going all Deep House with it. Growling sine basses and 909 hats are the order of the day here as Amtrac weaves the surprise standout on the EP, a sure-fire club hit. Sci-Fi SynthWaver Pyramid plays up the bombastic nature of the track as he delivers one of his soaring Terminator version of the song. Gruff bass and cascading synths from a dystopian soundtrack dominate the track only to be tempered with some unexpected sweet Disco licks. We we’re half prepared to be a bored with the Breakbot reMix, he’s gotten a little samey of late, but subverting out expectation he turns is a massive vintage Cosmic Disco oddessy, loaded with electronic zaps and pows and a tough, but funky, analog bassline. Alongside an extended version and B-side Golden Century, this really is an awesome collection of tracks. Pity the cover artwork is truly awful though.

So, we weren’t going to write about this song. Obviously as soon as a track with a line up like Sam Smith X Nile Rodgers X Disclosure X Jimmy Napes hit the internet every blog and their dog featured it (sometimes whether they liked it or not, it’s all about the traffic y’all!), so there was no point and honestly, could any track, let alone one written in a day, deliver in the promises that line up makes? But here’s the thing, it’s actually a really good tune. It’s definitely a grower, but having had the weekend to let it sink in we are digging it more and more with each listen.
From it’s infectious rubbery bass wobbles to the smooth vocals, there’s just something about this track that gets under your skin. Nile’s Tropical infused guitar playing against the decidedly British take on Funk is a lot more exciting on repeated listens, and the vocal harmonies are pitch perfect. It’s a short tune, and one that doesn’t feel like and of the contributors individually. That must have been one good day in the studio.

So, yeah, Glaswegian ElectroPop overlords Chvrches’ début track, Lies, is, as suspected, getting re-released with a full reMix package. The version of the track on their stunning début album, The Bones Of What You Believe, we a re-recorded version anyway, so it kinda’ makes sense. Also, it’s a strong-as-hell song that deserves wider exposure than it got first time around. So it’s all good.
the first of the reMixes to break cover comes from London producer Tourist who eases you slowly into the tune with a lush piano and vocal intro. This clean, and haunting, take on the song lasts for almost half the reMixes length, before Tourist flips the tune into a Bass heavy Deep House groover with hints of Chicago here and there. It;s compelling stuff, but you can;t help but feel like it’s not quite there. Don;t get us wrong, Tourist’s mix is full of amazing ideas and a beautiful sonic pallet, but unfortunately it never really delivers on the amazingness it promises, leaving it always just short of perfection. Still, a worthy addition to the Chvrches reMix pantheon and one we hope to be dancing to in a club soon.

Check out Maya Jane Coles’ reMix of Tiga Vs. Audition (Matthew Dear)’s hype inducing Let’s Go Dancing. Tiga’s most explosive track for al long while, Let’s Go Dancing caused a bit of a stir when it was released a couple of months ago, now with the release of the reMix EP looming we can wrap out ears around this, the one we were most looking forward to.
Maya takes things Deep and Techy with this one. Six minutes of hypnotic warehouse sounds with a fantasy twist. With a seeming nod to early Warp Bleep House Maya playfully skims magical melodies and psychedelic synths over to surface of a pounding House groove. The growling vocal refrain only adds to the enigmatic flavour of Maya’s mix. This one is going to get a serious club pounding, expect to be looing all sense of time on the dancefloor to this one very soon.

London duo Disclosure’s acclaimed début album, Settle, is less than six months old and they are already dropping brand new tracks. You would have thought the commercial success of Settle would have seen the guys coasting for a while, but no, they’ve been back in the studio and Apollo is the result.
There’s no vocals here, no collaboration, this a raw, undiluted Disclosure. In a way Apollo feels like Disclosure going back to their roots somewhat. There’s a definite leaning toward the dancefloor of darkened warehouses and strobe lit late night clubs that Radio 1 Roadshows. Hypnotic and ethereal, Apollo, blends a little House, a little Acid, a little Rave, a little Techno and even a little Psy Trance, into one undulating monster. Unrelentingly groovy, this really is one to loose yourself in.
