[Audio] Chromeo’s ‘Sexy Socialite’

Chromeo

First the album teaser, then the track Over Your Shoulder, and now another new tune, Sexy Socialite, has been unveiled along the road to the release of the almighty Chromeo’s fourth studio album, White Women. The album looks set to feature a whole host of collaborations (it’s the done thing this year) from the likes of Oliver, Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, Toro Y Moi and Solange. Sexy Socialite sees the Canadian duo teaming up with LCD Soundsystem’s Pat Mahoney on drums.

Sexy Socialite is amazingly New Wave. Whist still keeping it funky, the guys play with a little early 80s Pop. Not quite as Disco oriented as we’d expect from Chromeo, although there is a heavy amount of groove and vocoding galore, Sexy Socialite is Rick James style stripped down Funk Pop. Dave 1 is on his usual top form lyrically, funny and subversive, mixing retro machismo with a modern wit. the track is a six minute epic, that give Dave more than enough room for one of his solos before launching into a Vocoder duet with P-Thug. Sexy Socialite is quite a bit different than we were expecting from the album, but very very good. The album’s release date can’t come soon enough.

[MP3] Chromeo’s ‘Over Your Shoulder’

Chromeo

What a couple of weeks it’s been for new music! To top everything off here’s the new single from the almighty Chromeo. It’s no secret that Chromeo are one of our favourite outfits and after last week’s album teaser we never expected this new single to break ground so soon. But here it is, and a free download too. Get your teeth into Over Your Shoulder.

The words ‘slab’ and ‘funk’ spring immediately to mind, shimmying alongside the word ‘smooth’, as Over Your Shoulder is a smooth slab of funk as only Chrome can deliver. A slick, electric piano driven tune that shows off Chromeo at their subtler, and most quintessential, selves. A tongue-in-cheek tale woven by Dave 1’s vocals set to a thick backing of Electro-Funk and 70s Disco licks, swooshing synths and a lazy bassline, make for the best of laid back Chromeo. The first track taken from Chromeo’s forthcoming new album, White Women, Over Your Shoulder definitely has us eager to hear more.

[Audio] Chromeo reMixes Boys Noize

boys noize

We were a bit hot-and-cold when it came to Electro superstar Boys Noize’s new album Out Of The Black. Half of it was really good, the other half seems to be a bit by-the-numbers, and we would have expected more in 2012. One of the highlights of the record, if not the best track, was the album’s first single What You Want. This modern Electro re-imagining of PIL’s Order Of Death gave us really high hopes for Out Of The Black, so if he was going to get one of our favourite duos of all-time, Chromeo, to reMix anything, we are glad it was that.

And that’s what happened. The Chromeo reMix of What You Want actually starts off sounding more like Dave 1 and P-Thugg severely funking up the PIL track, before the just make it totally their own, after a while there’s next to no trace of the Boys Noize track left and what you’re left with is some amazing, funky tune loaded with Chromeo’s trademark talk box work, their trademark piercing synths and Dave 1 giving it some vocal passion. Perfect work, and a new Chromeo track. Which is, coincidentally, what we wanted.

Chromeo Remixed by RAC

chromeo

The RAC has quite a history behind it, which is why it seems odd that they are only now getting round to releasing a proper retrospective compilation, but that’s the facts. Chapter One is released 6th November and features this reMix by RAC’s André Allen Anjos of Chromeo’s classic Bonafied Lovin’.

Bonafied Lovin’ is one of our favourite Chrome tracks, so it’s with a critical ear that we hit play on this one. RAC do a fair enough job with the track. It’s a pretty standard synthy Disco reMix, but a thoroughly accomplished one. With a subtly Topical flavour and  layers of warm synths RAC have done the track justice. It’s not going to wow anyone, but it’s perfect for lazy summer nights.

Gigamesh reMixes Punks Jump Up

punks-jump-up

Roll up, roll up, it’s the Gigamesh assault part two. The Minneapolis master of Disco next steps up to the plate to reMix the forthcoming single from Punks Jump Up  and Chromeo’s Dave 1.

Once again, Gigamesh nails it. If fact, Gigamesh’s rolling arpeggio and sweeping Disco sound goes perfectly with Dave 1’s funky drawl. We’ve already hear the Oliver & Mickey reMixes of this track and this Gilgamesh version is just the icing on the cake, maybe even saving the best until last? Here we a pure diving dance track that’s main purpose is to get you going on the dancefloor, and it certainly succeeds at that, noting about this song doesn’t want to make you move. There’s even a slight Italo flavour to it, and some cinematic pads that give the track a nervous edge that feed into the songs subject matter.

Punks Jump Up & Chromeo’s Dave 1 with Oliver & Mickey

Punks Jump Up

The new Punks Jump Up single, ‘Mr. Overtime’, as I’m sure you’ll have heard by now, is a blinding slice of DiscoPop featuring the dulcet tones of none other than Chromeo’s Dave 1, doing a little overtime himself we see. I think we can pretty much all agree that Chromeo are probably the best band in the world working today, and if you don’t agree see them live and come back to me. Whilst Dave lending his production chops isn’t that rare, hearing his voice on a non-Chromeo record is something particularly interesting.

So, can ‘Mr. Overtime’ live up to the be the sum of it’s parts. Why yes, yes it can! Slick and Funktastic with a slightly dark edge to it, the track comes with a package featuring some of the best reMix talent around. Alongside Gigamesh we get the almighty double Oliver combo of Oliver who layer on thick vocoding and the kind of sliding synth bass that you can get totally lost ing. Oliver’s awesome mix of LA Dreamwave with a French Touch flavour is simply perfect for this tune. It still sounds slightly edgy, but the squelchy Electro Funk riffs are going to slay whatever dancefloor it drops on. A man like Mickey is up next, bringing with him the essence of late ‘80’s discotheques. With a retro good-times bassline that seems to compliment Dave 1’s vocals Mickey starts to bring in a Tropical flavour, but with a twist. This is’80’s Tropical grooves. All the palm trees are inflatable here! A stunning, and highly recommended single that we’re going to be hearing a lot from this summer.

Daze reMixes Chromeo

chromeo

Better late than never Daze turns up to the ‘Hot Mess’ reMix party with his take on the Chromeo tune.

As well as bringing a bottle Daze comes loaded with thick 70’s synths and squelchy basslines. It’s pretty hard to stand out from the pack in the game that is reMixing ‘Hot Mess’ but Daze does his job by producing a Disco tune that is that tiny bit more retro than everyone else. This is a late night jam.

Mayer Hawthorne covers Chromeo

chromeo

I’m never really sure what to make of bands putting cover versions of their own tracks by other bands on their releases. Did Kitsuné start it?

Here we have Mayer Hawthorne covering Chromeo and Solange Knowles’ ‘When The Night Falls’, taken from Chromeo’s ‘When The Night Falls Single’. Being Chromeo’s single it’s billed as written below, but surely that should be ‘Mayer Hawthorne – When The Night Falls (Chromeo Cover)’, no? Mayer Hawthorne being the artist. But I suppose that would screw up sales in iTunes or something. And as a blogger who am I writing about? Chromeo, or Mayer Hawthorne? Who get’s the picture and the purchase links? Today I’m going with Chromeo as it’s their single, but it does my head in.

Anyhoo, I’m sure you want to know about the music. Luckily after all that it’s pretty damn good. It is quite an achievement to take a Chromeo track and make it smoother, but Mayer Hawthorne manages it, bringing a laid back 70’s Funk to the track. Stick this track on and everything slips into slow motion/

Ghosts Of Venice X Chromeo

Ghosts Of Venice are next up to reMix Chromeo’s latest single ‘When the Night Falls’, turning the tune into a massive Nu-Disco monster.

Underpinned with a relentless Funky hook, Ghosts Of Venice’s mix doesn’t let up for start to finish, it’s flat out dancefloor gold. Layers of hypnotic Disco loops and snatches of Solange Knowles’ vocals build and intertwine tempered only with some heavy filtering. If it’s peak time and you’re trying to choose what ‘When The Night Falls’ reMix to play, I think you may have found you’re answer.
