Miike Snow & Lykke Li

Miike Snow

Do you get the feeling that Miike Snow are pulling a Baby Monster and streaming the whole new album in the weeks running up to it’s release? Three tracks in two weeks?

Anyway, this ones a bit different, ‘Black Tin Box’ features Lykke Li, who you know we love a bit of, and it’s not a upbeat Indie-Electro track. What it is though, is a pretty powerful, brooding slice of dark ElectroPop with hints of The Knife. Although Lykke is painfully underused ‘Black Tin Box’ is a nice example of icy Scandinavian Pop.

Ronika reMixed by Echoes

Ronika

OK, so we don’t normally go in for the whole blog ‘exclusive’ bragging rights thing, we don’t see the point, very little on the internet stays exclusive for more than 30 seconds, and your ‘exclusive’ probably got leaked last week anyway. We always though it was about the music, not the blog. But we are amused by how much exclusivity there is crammed into this one post, so we’re going to mention it. Hypocrites much? What we have here is the première one of our favourite Indie tinged SynthPop acts, Echoes, reMixing our favourite Madonna Of The Midlands™, Ronika, topped of with a exclusive Ronika based display of retro sportswear from our favourite photographer, and snapper to the stars, Katja Ruge. Literally nothing about this post isn’t so fresh it’s still smoking.

Anyhoo, dazzling shininess of this post aside, what Echoes have turned in is a pretty stunning sunrise-beach-party take on Ronika’s ‘Only Only’. Part Balearic, part Progressive House, Echoes strip back the urban dancefloor urgency of the original (and it’s subsequent reMixes) and insured let Ron’s vocals swim about in a sea of chilled good vibes. Echoes have crafted a laid back and emotional slice of summery House with a classy piano line and let Ron’s vocals sit in just the right place in the mix, somewhere just in the distance, so the track washes over you.

Ronika – Only Only (Echoes reMix)

Completely coincidentally, both Ronika and Echoes will be appearing on our electronic rumors volume 1 compilation, released 13th February, and both putting in an appearance at the launch party on the 10th February. Details here.

Ronika’s latest single ‘Only Only’/’In The City’ is out now and comes highly recommended.

Mitch Murder reMixes Lazerhawk

Lazerhawk

Oooo, this is exciting stuff. SynthWave guru Lazerhawk is gearing up for the release of his ‘Arrival’ EP, the Jordan F reMix has been rocking our worlds for a while now but we finally get to get our ears round Mitch Murder’s take on the track.

We’re still reeling from Mitch’s new album ‘Current Events’ (which just missed the top spot in our top albums of 2011) so we know the man is on top for right now, but once again he blows us away with this soaring slice of pure synthesizer joy. Unlike some electronic music producers who sit in front of Abelton firing off arpeggios, Mitch is a true musician. His mastery of layering and melody and his ability to capture an emotional mood in a synth dance track is second to none. This is what it sounds like in my brain all the time. Vangelis would be proud.

Lazerhawk’s new EP is out soon also featuring reMixes from Miami Nights 1984 and Jordan F.

Quasars ‘80’s Muscle’

quasars

One of our favourite Russian producers, and one we have featured a lot on the past few months, Quasars, has dropped a brand new retro tune.

‘80’s Muscle’ is seriously epic, a word that gets thrown around a lot, but this track really epitomises epicness. It’s rousing, inspirational, synthesizer soundtrack stuff with a slow Sci-Fi build that layers different electronic melodies until the power chords kick in. That’s when things get properly fist pumping. Quasars is fast becoming cream of the crop when it comes to Russian SynthWave.

Flashlights’ new single

Flashlights

Fresh from their critically acclaimed ‘Hidden Behind Trees’ EP for Binary, Denver Synth outfit Flashlights are back with a new single, ‘Fireworks’.

Injecting a little more ElectroPop into their dreamtime synth sound with ‘Fireworks’, Flashlights combine an ‘80’s Indie vocal with layers of crisp electronics for a sound more inclined to the upbeat and catchy, as we first heard with “’New Hampshire II’. It’s a nice direction for Flashlights to be going in, with something about it that recalls mid-‘80’s British Indie as well as the melodic ElectroPop at it’s core. It’s catchy as hell too!

Flashlights – Fireworks

‘Fireworks’ is taken from the  EP ‘So Close To Midnight’, released soon.

Strangers cover Tears For Fears’ ‘Shout’

strangers

So, if you ignore an James Corden associated abominations, Tears For Fears’ ‘Shout’ is one of the best songs ever written, not many covers do it justice (and some (see aforementioned abomination comment) are so shit they barely qualify as music), thankfully London SynthPop trio Strangers’ take on the track is stop on.

I’ve heard the track with distorted industrial percussion before, but always with terrible industrial vocals, here Strangers get electronically experimental with the beats but keep the anthemic, melodic ,vocals (which aren’t easy to sing, so kudos there!) intact. It’s an awesome slice of dark ElectroPop which really conveys the power of the original song.

Goldroom’s ‘Angeles’

Goldroom

Yesterday Goldroom, known to the rest of us as one of Binary’s head-honchos Josh Legg, released his début EP.

Leading the EP is new track ‘Angels’, a supremely laid back track with a tropical Disco feel. The percussion alone is something to make you sit up. Making some brave sonic moves within Disco, Josh makes each one of them pay off by creating a chilled beach-party groove with a live quality that’s not so easy for an electronic musician to capture. Layer that with Josh’s vocals, which he always layers thick to create really sweeping harmonies, and you’ve got a track which I imagine, completely personifies the ideal of it’s subject matter.

Metronomy Vs. Le Crayon & Oxford

metronomy

Le Crayon & Oxford, two top quality Nu-Disco producers in their own right, join forces to take on the Indie-Electro powerhouse that is Metronomy. The results are funking good.

This twosome lay down an easy groove which gives the , now instantly recognisable, tune a new spin. With sidechaned pumping French House and slick Disco licks set to a relaxed tempo Le Crayon & Oxford deliver a song to allow you to take a step back from all your stresses. You thought ‘Heartbreaker’ was played out? here’s a new lease of life.

Picture Book

Picture Book

Right, on first impression I wasn’t going to post about this track, it seemed a bit to much like Ibiza fluff for me, but my word it is catchy! It’s been stuck in my head to the extent when I have to write something.

Picture Book are are brothers Dario Darnell and Lorne Ashley and their track ‘Sunshine’ features vocals from Greta Svabo Bech, her of Deadmau5’ ‘Raise Your Weapon’ fame. It’s got a good chance of being a big summer hit, and once you get past the Ibiza fluffyness of it it’s actually a really complex song hidden underneath a ‘90’s Pop Dance track. Give it a second listen, you’ll see what I mean.

Picture Book (Feat. Greta Svabo Bech) – Sunshine

The ‘Sunshine’ reMix package is out in February.
