[Video] Goin’ Old School: The Sound Of Belgium (Front 242, Neon & Logo)

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

This week we’re dedicating Goin;’ Old School to to the documentary, and it’s soon to be released soundtrack, The Sound Of Belgium. Directed by Jozef Devillé the film has already won numerous awards and chronicles the journey of Belgian music from the dancehall days of Popcorn, through EBM and New Beat to House and Techno. You can find local screenings on their website, and this November a three CD soundtrack compilation will be released with a tracklist reading like a whos-who of influential Belgian music. To us, Belgian music will always mean old school EBM and New Beat, so check out three tracks from the forthcoming album that remind us of out wasted youth.

It’s been featured on Goin’ Old School before, but Front 242’s Headhunter from 1988 is the quintessential EBM track.

Another one from 1988 Neon’s Target Records New Beat classic, Voices.

Maybe 1988 was the year for us? Logo’s moody SynthPop/New Beat Businessmen certainly helped.

The Sound Of Belgium triple album is released 25th November, the documentary has it’s first UK screening this month, find dates here.

[Video] Gesaffelstein’s ‘Hate Or Glory’

Time to face facts, you can dress it up with platitudes like ‘Techno’ or ‘Electro’ all you want, but Gesaffelstein is an EBM producer. Fact. His tunes take everything EBM was good at, regains everything EBM lost, ditches the crap and makes EBM good again. His latest Acid soaked single, Hate Or Glory (how EBM a title is that?) exemplifies this.

[Audio] Jensen Sportag’s ‘Rain Code’

Rain Code is the third taster you’ve got from Nashville space cadets Jensen Sportag’s forthcoming, and amazing, début album, Stealth Of Days. That’s now three opportunities you’ve had to revel in this duo’s mysterious, romantic, dreamlike musical world before the records release on Cascine next month. You should be well excited by now, if you’re not than there’s a chance you’ve actually been listening to something else. We’ve been listening to the new Jensen Sportag album, if you have not then it sucks to be you.

Rain Code has an oddly onomatopoeic title. Which is probably a completely fatuous use of the word onomatopoeic but it really does sound, in some way, like rain code (whatever rain code is). Kinda’ gently, yet imposing. Complex and delicate. The beauty of rain and the intricacies of code. Totally captivating, and it’ll make the ladies wet (I can’t believe I just wrote that!). Huddle under your digital umbrella and prepare for a slight chance of electric piano, gusts of warm synth, ghostly yet human vocal showers and a force five chillnado.

Burning Bright is one of our tunes of the year, but if you needed any more convicting to go out and grab yourself a copy, check out No Stick.

This is the perfect compliment to Maya’s amazing Comfort album, No Stick is no mere B-side. This is a deep, hypnotic, funky-as-hell dancefloor destroyer. Do you like New Song by Howard Jones? You do? Good, and so your should. Want to hear something that sounds a little like a future R&B/Chillwave version of it? You do? Excellent stuff. Just whack on the new tune from Oxford’s finest purveyor of electronic bliss Chad Valley then, you’ll be sorted. Once you’ve heard it, go and buy tickets to catch him live with Keep Shelly In Athens this month.

As you can get the track is pretty 80s, but like 80s that has drifted into your ears on the winds of nostalgia and has got all blow around and by the time it reaches your ears it’s a like woozy dream of the 80s, one in which you can’t stop dancing and possibly get hugged by anthropomorphised bits of furniture. So let your feet move to the electronic soul beat and swing your arms to the floaty synths. It;s all good in Chad Valleys 80s dreamland.

[Audio] Aeroplane reMixes Kris Menace & Romanthony’s ‘Nite4U’

The contribution to German Nu-Disco Producer Kris Menace’s Features album of last year from the late-great voice of House Romanthony, Nite4U, also puts in a appearance of the reMixed version of the record, released this week. And the producer stepping up to the plate to take on the track? French hype magnet Aeroplane works his euro Disco magic on Nite4U, check it out.

A rolling slice of piano lead dance music, Aeroplane’s mix of Nite4U teeters on the edge of early 90s House without actually taking the plunge. Not quite Disco, not quite House, it’s bulging bassline and snappy 909 beats exist in a timeless, classic, dance music form all of their own. A solid dancefloor workout, Romanthony’s vocals feel perfectly at home amidst the warehouse vibe.

[MP3] Diamond Cut reMixes Badboxes’ ‘JSMN’

Blimey! We were beginning to think we’d never hear a new track from Australian producer, and seriously one of the best-in-the-game, Diamond Cut again. It’s been a long while since the man of mystery has filled this website’s columns, but we still had faith he’d be back. And back he is with this storming reMix of Pittsburgh DreamPop outfit Badboxes’ single JSMN.

It seems Diamond Cut still has that flair, this reMix of JSMN, revels in it’s retro swing. Dreamwave to it’s fullest, the tune layers chunky synths and waves of starlight keys in a way that is both immediately 80s sounding but contemporary and fresh. And that was always Diamond Cut’s premiere talent, to make nostalgic tunes that never sounded trite or pastiche, that were relevant and guaranteed current floorfillers. That’s exactly what he deliver’s here, alongside the original’s heartfelt IndiePop vocals. We’re hoping this is a return to a more regular release schedule for Diamond Cut, but if it’s not we’ll keep ourselves content with this one.
