Arcade High’s début album

Arcade High

Pittsburgh based SynthWave artist Arcade High’s music is a cross between the kinda of SynthWave we are used to, influenced my ‘80’s TV and Movie themes, and the adrenaline chaos of video game arcades a couple of decades ago. Prepare for sweet lead lines with a ChipTune edge with his début album The Art Of Youth.

Appropriately the into track is called ‘Inset Coin’ and after a selection of 8-bit sounds we are dropped into the first song proper, Miami Nights. It’s in this track that you start to get a feel for Arcade high. Rich retro synths build thick, nostalgic sound full of synth flourishes and uplifting progressions. There’s something thoughtful and pensive about Arcade High’s music, despite his neon flashing muse. The albums highlights, for us, were 1987, a deep boogie of a cop show theme tune with a video game lead line amidst the shimmering synths. Electric City is digital bassline gold, growling like an angry Italo beast and providing a core for the Disco-esque lead line to play around it’s space. The surprise track of the record was Crush, the albums only vocal track that enlists the voice of Maddie Ardillo and delivers a catchy Italo slow-jam with a ‘90’s Indie overtone. The whole eleven tracks of The Art Of Youth are worthy of your attention, a strong début for Arcade High. Did we mention it was free?

Ryan Riot reMixes Satellite Stories

Satellite Stories

Swiss SynthWave producer Ryan Riot has returned to the electronic rumors Inbox with a brand new reMix. The current focus of his attention are comically voiced Finish Indie Rockers Satellite Stories and their summery Indie tune Anti-Lover.

Like a Nordic Two Door Cinema Club, Satellite Stories have got the right amount of guitar jangles and “Oooo-Ooos”, so in swoops Ryan Riot with some robotic arpeggios and a Disco beat. The big retro chords in the chorus, particularly, are uplifting as hell for a Monday morning. There’s a tad to much of that quite shitty sounding guitar in the background, but it doesn’t distract too much from a quality reMix. Roll on more Ryan Riot.

Satellite Stories début album is released 21st September.

Engarde’s ‘Firebird’

Engarde

Here’s the latest offering from Swiss Discoy SynthWave producers Engarde. It’s called ‘Firebird’, and it’s going to be your surprise hit of the week. The duo has been pretty quite since last years ‘Fresh 80’ on Moonbootique, hopefully the recent dropping of tunes indicated a new release coming.

‘Firebird’ is a track that’s smooth as hell, but Funky with it. Taking cues from Filter Disco and Dreamwave, ‘Firebird’ kicks in a way we haven’t heard much of this year, taking us back to those massive Disco mixes during the summer of 2010 from the likes of Russ Chimes and Grum, but with a nice little 2012 twist. Engarde have totally got the pumping DiscoPop thing down pat, we’re looking forward to more from them in the coming months.

Jupiter reMixed by DiscoRazor

Jupiter

The Jupiter momentum just doesn’t quit, it seems like every other day we have something awesome about the French ElectroPop duo to write about. In this instance fellow Frenchman and master of Disco and SynthWave DiscoRazor has turned his reMixing attentions to Jupiter’s ‘Hula Hoop’ from the recently released eleven tracks of pure awesome they call ‘Juicy Lucy’.

The original is pretty indicative of Jupiter. ElectroPop with a Disco flavour with a slight Indie vibe and some melodically chopped up vocals. DiscoRazor strips out the Indie guitar and replaces it with some seriously smooth Disco with a bit of a House edge to it. DiscoRazor shows his SynthWave side in the track too, with a twisted synth solo that leads right into a slick piano breakdown. DiscoRazor has delivered a slick carefree tune packed with Funk that perfectly compliments Jupiter’s original whist making it slightly more palatable to late night dancefloors. You could od a lot worse than investigating DiscoRazor’s recently released ‘Golden Night’ EP.

Jupiter Gang

Jupitergang

The mysterious Jupiter Gang is another awesome surprise we’ve had in out SoundCloud dropbox this week. This is where we would normally write something about the artist, but we literally know fuck all about Jupiter Gang. Look, he’s got short hair, and shades, he’s a shades wearer! OK..on to the music.

If I had to guess something about Jupitergang, I would say he likes a bit of Moroder, like a bit of late ‘70’s electronic Funk and Disco, probably is into Keytars, and might have a fondness for funky electronic soundtracks of the ‘80’s such as the works of Vince DiCola. That’s what I get from ‘Movers’, a huge slab of synthesizer Funk with just the tiniest hint of SynthWave and the tiniest hint of Italo. ‘Moves’ powers along on it’s synth bassline like a funk juggernaut, aided by cheeky licks and lush retro chords and those staccato stabs that epitomise ‘80’s electronic Funk. We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on Jupiter Gang.

Mitch Murder’s new EP

Mitch Murder

Mitch Murder, the master of all things SynthWave, dropped a new EP over the weekend. The amount of new material Mitch is treating us to is amazing, and all of is literally blows the cometition out of the water. The ‘MARS’ EP is Mitch Murder on fine soundtrack form. Hold on to your space boots, we’re in for a wild electronic Sc-Fi ride.

The ‘MARS’ EP is somewhat Mitch Murder’s tribute to the artist and designer of the future Mœbius, who passed away recently. A red planet themed journey through science fiction soundscapes in that way only Mitch Murder can. The man’s skill with a synthesizer is only matched by his production chops. ‘The Deimos Incident’ is good indicator of what the EP holds, it’s a moody atmospheric peice, ominous like the planet itself but shot through with the optimism of exploration. Mitch has totally nailed the reflective ‘80’s drums and dreamlike synths. ‘Valles Marineris Pursuit’ is a twisting, sparkling slice of synthesizer gold, much like it’s EP companion ‘Phobos Gun Run’ which we featured previously, it;s got a strong Vince DiCola flavour realty capturing the ‘80’s futuristic mood with it’s lush stabs and winding melodies. We can’t really stress enough how Mitch Murder is the cream of the Synthwave crop. Flawless production & musicianship to such a high level he leaves others in his dust. Go pick up this EP right now if you are at all into electronic music.

Syncroft’s ‘So Fresh’

Syncroft

Sarajevan Disco & SynthWave producer’s Syncroft latest jam is very very good. Check out my writing skills there I’ve been sitting here trying to think of what to write about ‘So Fresh’, but it’s hard ‘cos I keep getting distracted by how very very good it is. It’s like someone put all the things I like in instrumental dance music into a bowl and baked an Electro cake just for me.

So, Syncroft bills the track as Progressive House, well forget about that because it isn’t, let’s chalk that up to SoundClouds poor crop of genre choices. What it is is a melting pot if Disco, SynthWave and B-Boy Electro, and long time readers will know that’s pretty much all I need. On the prog side of things there is a slight Prog Trance groove to the track as a whole, especially in the beat and the lower bassline, and the sweeps, OK, so it is a bit Proggy, but on top of that you got this digital B-Boy bassline and twisting Disco leads and it all just works, OK? Oh I don;t care what it is, did I mention it was very very good?

Arc Neon

Arc Neon

Arc Neon is a relatively new UK producer who was previously part of London based Indie-Electro four peice Wolf And Yeti. With a new name and a new sound Arc Neon promises to deliver socially charged SynthWave with a melodic edge.

Arc Neon isn’t the first SynthWave artist to use ‘80’s news report samples for the basis for a track, but they way he does it certainly blends better than most. Running throughout ‘Beyond Our Control’ is an unsettling recap of some of the major disasters, both natural and man-made, that plagued North America and The World during the ‘80’s, this narrative both sits in a musically subtle place and adds an air of nervous tension to the track. This allows Arc Neon’s lush retro synths and attention to the importance of hooks and melody to shine, the melancholic rhythm section contracting with lead line full of optimism and the samples lending import to the whole track. Well be keeping out eye on Arc Neon in the future, he’s got an EP out soon.

Ace Attack’s ‘reMixes’ EP

Ace Attack

We haven’t really heard from French producer Ace Attack in quite a while, but he’s just released a new EP, for free no less. And it just goes to prove that the man hasn’t been sitting on his laurels, he’s obviously been busy down in the studio and now it;s time for him to, as it says on the tin, come out of hiding.

The EP is basically a collection of reMixes, two of the tracks are billed as originals, but are based so strongly on existing tracks they might as well be reMixes too, in fact the EP is called ‘Ace Attack reMixes’. The lead track on the EP is ‘Out Of Hiding’, which is based on, or a reMix of, Pamela Stanley’s Italo/Hi-NRG classic ‘Coming Out Of Hiding’ from 1983. Ace Attack brings the track right up to date but keeps the retro flavour of the track. It’s a really good choice of vocal to use, realty period sounding and Ace Attacks works them for every drop of Italo goodness. While not actually doing much to the original track, Ace Attack certainly make it more friendly to contemporary dancefloors. The rest of the EP continues updating classic tracks, sometimes subtly in the case of ‘Running Back to You’, sometimes getting a complete makeover in the case of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’. Renaming reMixes as original tracks is a bit weird, but you can’t fault the music, top quality retro Electro & Disco. Pick up the EP and find out.
