The electronic rumors Awards: BEST REMIX – electronic rumors’ top 20 reMixes of 2011!!!

2011Best Remix

Let’s kick things off with one of the biggies. Best reMix.

Compiling 03-20 was tough, this year has been amazing for reMixes, it seems like every release in 2011 came loaded with quality versions. There were so many singles released this year that it was nearly impossible to choose your favourite mix off of. As ever, I’m sure there are tracks we have forgotten, and tracks we will be kicking ourselves for not including when they are pointed out to us, and tracks we will remember tomorrow.

The winner though, and the runner up, were always destined for the top slots from the moment they dropped. In the first half of 2011 I would have said that Ride The Universe’s reMix of Chromeo’s ‘Hot Mess’ was definitely going to be number one, and that was only very closely snatched away when Madonna Of The Midlands™ Ronika released ‘Only Only’ complete with Fear Of Tigers take on the track. Both mixes are jaw-droopingly good, light years ahead of the competition, with Fear Of Tigers just taking the top spot with nostalgia points for weaving elements of late ‘80’s Dance Music into it’s Electro tapestry and making us go all glassy eyed. Combining a Bomb The Bass vibe with contemporary ElectroPop and Nu-Disco, Fear Of Tigers created a vibrant, exciting, make-you-jump-out-of-your-seat track for Ronika’s get-down vocals, it’s the prefect package. While Ride The Universe’s talk-box Funk was my hottest track for most of the year. Innovative and fresh, their reMix of ‘Hot Mess’ is easily the best out there.

Jordan F’s ‘Summers Of Tomorrow’ EP

jordan-f1

Jordan F is fast becoming the Vangelis of the SynthWave world. After dropping a bunch of beach party tunes Jordan seems to have turned his attention to soundtracking a dystopian future, as he does in his latest EP for Rosso Corsa Records.

The ‘Summers of Tomorrow’ EP is a journey through rain the back streets of some megacity, bather on a neo glow with only the rain for company. The EP kick off with ‘Beginnings’ which, as you can imagine, is a sweeping, epic, title sequence peice, slow basslines, reminiscent of the ‘80’s ‘V’ are accompanied by some powerful melodic work that draws you in and sets you up for the other three tracks. ‘Abandoned Streets’ drops you right into the ‘plot’ of the EP, moody Italo beats and basslines and Sci-Fi synths convey the mood of Jordan’s future metropolis. His skilful melding of Italo, Outrun Electro and EBM allows him to create these Cyberpunk atmospheres in his tracks without ever becoming over-run by it, as with ‘Renegade’, you realise Jordan can evoke this BladeRunner-esque imagery, but never looses sight of just being a good song either. ‘Renegade’ is both narratively exciting and a damn good retro Italo tune. The EP wraps up with the title track, the rousing, hopeful, aftermath of the release. this has been an amazing year for Jordan F, having gone from Dreamwave newcomer to one of the big players of the SynthWave scene and a bit of a wizard behind the synths.

Miami Nights 1984’s ‘Saved By The Bell’

miami-nights-1984

Miami Nights 1984’s X-Mas gift to you all!

After a period of quite Miami Nights 1984 drops another tune, hot on the heels of ‘Ocean Drive’. ‘Saved By The Bell’ is pure electronic nostalgia. A pretty gentle tune that works it way into you heart and soul with a solid Italo beat and some of the richest, most pleasing, synth work I have heard in ages. I hope we hear more from Miami Nights 1984 in 2012 than we did this year.

Viceroy reMixes Yelle

yelle

Here is San Francisco based Nu-Disco producer Viceroy’s entry in Yelle’s ‘Comme Un Enfant’ reMix competition.

The winner will have their track appear on a forthcoming Yelle release, and Viceroy definitely show himself to be a front runner. Taking in a laidback piano groove, he seems to rein in the song, chilling it out. Not even the growling bass riff can stop this tune from being super smooth.

♫ Yelle – Comme Un Enfant (Viceroy reMix)

‘Comme Un Enfant’ is taken from the ‘Safari Disco Club’ album, out now.

Perseus’ new EP

Perseus

In a stunning display of X-Mas cheer French Express head honcho Perseus has dropped his new EP, for free, and it is seriously good.

I’ve been rockin’ these three tracks all morning, every track on the EP is total quality and exists in a place where Nu-Disco,  Chicago House and late ‘80’s Pop Dance meet. ‘Cool Runnings’ kicks off the EP with a laid back groove with an ‘80’s electronic Soul vibe and sets the Disco/House precedent. ‘Russian Girlfriends’ dusts off the old ‘Ashley’s Roachclip’ break, a brave move put Perseus pulls it off with stunning effect, I think there’s even a bit of PM Dawn in there too! The whole mix is pure early ‘90’s House gold, and highly addictive. ‘Running Back To You’ rounds off the EP by bringing it back to a smooth beach party Disco vibe, with random ChipTune elements. Not only is this EP free, it’s better than a lot of it’s contemporaries you be spending money on. PopDanceHouseDisco brilliance!

Legan And Met’s ‘Future Odyssey’

Legan And Met

Dutch duo Legan And Met first came to our attention with their recent reMix of Forster The People’s ‘Helena Beat’.

The guys have now released their début EP containing five original tunes (good on them for not just flooding everyone with reMix after reMix, just to get their name around!) for us to sink out teeth into and get to grips with just who Legan And Met are. SynthWave with an Electro beat could sum them up, but that would be doing the twosome a disservice, their tracks are much more intricate and varied than that. they create epic, synthesizer soundscapes that are both emotionally melodic and Sci-Fi insane, with Cosmic Disco grooves for people in shiny jumpsuits. The songs on the ‘Future Odyssey’ EP are constantly evolving and building from start to finish, so the finale of each tune is a rousing electronic set-peice. Serious retro-future stuff.

Steve Moore’s ‘Carol Of The Bells’

steve-moore

Apparently this was a track written for a project that fell through a couple of years ago, but it’s so chilling and wintery that synthesizer overlord Steve Moore though it best to release it this X-Mas.

‘Carol Of The Bells’ is a haunting, atmospheric peice that immediately makes you feel cold. It’s an icy soundscape, but shot through with a strain of hopefulness, like being lost in the dark and seeing a light. I’m not sure if it’s X-Massy or not (probably, in a creepy ‘80’s BBC children’s X-Mas drama way), but it’s beautiful nonetheless.
