Qkumba Zoo’s new album

qkumba zoo

You may remember South African dance act Qkumba Zoo. Well, they storm back this month with a brand new album. There’s good news and bad news. The bad news is their sound hasn’t changed or evolved in the slightest since the ‘90’s, the good news is their sound hasn’t changed or evolved in the slightest since the ‘90’s!

Now is the prefect time for Qkumba Zoo to strike while the iron is hot. With the current resurgence of interest in ‘90’s dance music and the creeping of ‘90’s dance sounds and production techniques into contemporary club records, Qkumba Zoo’s new album, ‘LetTheLightIn’, sounds pleasingly nostalgic. The big 909 beats, occasional breaks and layered floaty vocals that run throughout the record feel almost retro these days. It’s vocalist Levannah that really drives this album, her effortless sliding, between the chanted and the ethereal, weaves an audio narrative  that is surprisingly involving, and if you can get into the ‘90’s groove then the album is a good experience. If you’ve been chilling in the sun this summer, busting out the old Orbital or Opus III as the ‘90’s revival hits full swing, then this album will be right up your alley.

Who wants to hear the new Justice single?

justice

Well, frankly, if you know anything about music comment on the internet you already have. But here’s out two penny’s worth anyway. if we could tie you down and make you listen we would.

We’re really digging it, I expect a lot of fans of Justice’s pedal-to-the-metal ‘bangers’ will be a little disappointed, but we’ve always preferred Justice when they indulge their Disco side and the obvious musical talent a little. To us, both this and ‘Civilization’ are justice at their epic, Disco opera, best.

New tune from Toro Y Moi

toro y moi

Toro Y Moi ‘s ‘All Alone’, taken from his forthcoming ‘Freaking Out’ EP is a pure synth Funk experience.

It’s awesome to see synth Funk in the hands of an already accomplished songwriter who can keep things catchy and slick and never veering off into Moog squelching oblivion. Of course there is a little wash of Chillwave over the top but on the whole ‘All Alone’ shrugs off the chains of ‘turning-the-reverb-up-to-11 for a smoother, more soulful, sound.

Goin Old School: Debbie Gibson – Electric Youth

The fact that Debbie Gibson’s ‘Electric Youth’ is from 1989 feels a little wrong somehow. Anyway, I’m dropping it ‘cos no-one reads this thing on a Saturday anyway! Besides, if a painfully hip Canadian ElectroPop duo can name themselves after the song that counts for something…right?

Neo Disco Machine

Neo Disco Machine hails from the Russian Federation and has just dropped his first EP of disco flavoured SynthWave. For free!

The ‘Break The Ice’ EP contains four top quality slices of vintage synth fuelled electronic dancefloor sauce. For me the two standout tracks are ‘I’ve been Looking For You’, an Electro Disco tracks driven by a relentless arpeggio which adds in a little Disco and some nice vocal manipulation, and the title track, a dark Electro track which provides the backing for a space-age synth lead. Neo Disco Machine has compiled just the right amounts of Disco and Dreamwave in his music, which is a little more diverse than your standard SynthWave stuff and give him the edge to stand out from the crowd.
