Goin’ Old School: Herbie Hancock – Rockit

Synth Jazzasist (yes, I just invented the word Jazzasist, deal with it) and funk futurist Herbie Hancock decided to blow people’s tiny minds in 1983 by releasing ‘Rockit’, a record with synthesizers, scratching and vocoding in it. Everyone was bewildered, it became a massive hit in the UK. Which meant that British video makers (and Pop cryers) Godley & Creme had to make a video that was even more bewildering.

‘We Don’t Miss A Beat’ comes out on London label Aztec Records today and continues in VGL’s quest for ElectroPop dominance. Swapping ‘Body Moves’’ dancefloor sexuality for a feel-good party vibe this time around ‘We Don’t Miss A Beat’ shimmers and glides through, a perfect, three and a half minutes of electronic Pop at it’s finest.

PNAU’s ‘Solid Ground’ video

PNAU’s video for ‘Solid Ground’ had just premiered.

We’ve already had a few of the reMixes knocking around and the single itself dropped last week. The inclusion of a blue-dotted-boobs video seals the deal as an Indie-Electro anthem for the summer.

Ronika; ‘Wiyoo’

Nottingham’s finest proponent of retro DiscoPop, Ronika, finally releases her ‘Forget Yourself’/’Wiyoo’ single next week.

We introduced you to the A-side early last month, now just ahead of the single release you can have a listen to the B-side, ‘Wiyoo’ (as in Why you?) cements her position as the Madonna of the midlands, only with more New York Disco authenticity and than Madge could ever muster. This track could quite easily be the theme tune and hit single to a 1984 edgy rom-com called Wiyoo, probably starring Ronika in her first major motion picture role, bringing some of the style and sass that allowed her to dominate the charts in ‘82-‘83 to the screen. If you get what I mean. The music, though, is pure early 80’s DiscoPop of the highest calibre. Many people try to emulate this sound but Ronika seems to be able to do it effortlessly and unlike many of her contemporaries does it without a hint of pastiche or novelty. ‘Wiyoo’ sounds totally authentic.

Mr. Mæn reMixes Publicist

Mr. Mæn, who has wowed us with many of his recent reMixes, has turned his attention to Publicist’s ‘Come To My Senses’ from his recent Discotexas EP ‘Professional Show Business Pt.1′.

Mr. Mæn builds a kind of machine Funk thoroughout the track with relentless industrial sounding ethnic percussion playing nicely against the groove of the bassline and the vocoded vocals. Mæn has created a deep hypnotic peice here for you to sink into.

Goin’ Old School: Skinny Puppy – Warlock

What can be said about Skinny Puppy that hasn’t already. Synthesizer pioneers that changed the face of much of electronic music. 1989’s ‘Warlock ‘is both harsh and beautiful and sadly the only good track on the (Al Jourgensen ruined) ‘Rabies ‘ album.

AXXE & StardonE

The ElectroSleaze of AXXE plus StardonE’s Cosmic Disco. How good a combination is that?

Actually, StardonE brings things a back to earth a little with this reMix which is more rooted in late 80’s SynthPop than his usual spacey Disco Funk, even going so far as to include a little Italo in the mix. the end result being a track that could have rocked Hi-NRG dancefloors a couple of decades ago but will also rock Disco dancefloors today.

There’s more AXXE reMixes on the way, some special stuff coming.

Chris Malinchak’s new EP

Chris Malinchak’s new sounds on the French Express label is his forthcoming EP ‘Make Your Move’, with the awesome ‘Another Day’ as the B-Side.

The title track is the perfect summer nights Nu-Disco track. A solid groove, snatched of vocoder and wicked licks in a melting pot of Funk, for the height of the party. When the sun starts. to come up, though, is when ‘Another Day’ comes into play with it’s distant, dreamy ElectroPop vibe with a Disco sheen

Dirty Vegas reMixed by Visitor

Dirty Vegas rank as legends in my book, one of the saviours of vocal House and by-proxy ElectroPop. At a time when the Tiëstos of this world ruled they were laying down smooth, emotive tracks.

Vulture Music’s highly talented ElectroPop act Visitor will be just one of the stunning line up of reMixers on their forthcoming ‘Little White Doves’ single. Alongside the likes of Ladytron, Penguin Prison, Nightriders and Blonde Rocka, Visitor bring their own brand of, almost atmospheric, ElectroPop to the tune creating quite an emotional experience and some definite hands-in-the-air moments.

‘Little White Doves’ is taken from the ‘Electric Love’ album, the single is coming soon.

Goin’ Old School: Krush – House Arrest

One of my favourite tracks of all time, from 1987 Krush’s ‘House Arrest’. The bassline, the keys, Ruth Joy’s floaty vocals work together so well. One of a handful of tracks that really broke the UK house scene. Such memories.
