[Video] AlunaGeorge’s Attracting Flies’

It’s quite possible that Attracting Flies is the best thing London based EelctroPop/R&B duo AlunaGeorge have released singe Analyser. Catchy and fun, even the beats stick in your mind. It’s about time the duo got a decent, big budget, video. their music seems to call out for lavish and interesting visuals. Well, that’s been delivered with the video for Attracting Flies.

The new clip is directed by Emil Nava, and runs the gauntlet of fairy tales, giving each one a modern, inner-city, spin. For such a frivolous concept, the clip is really nicely, and moodily, shot. See if you can name each one.

Attracting Flies is released 10th March and is taken from AlunaGeorge’s forthcoming début album, titled Body Music. Released on 1st July.

[Audio] AlunaGeorge’s Attracting Flies’

London Electro R&B duo AlunaGeorge have gone from humble beginnings to being a music blogosphere destroying juggernaut 9amusingly, the first sentence we wrote about them, two years ago now, was “You really could be looking at the ‘next big thing’ here.”, which I‘m sure earns us internet points, at the very least a ‘Tastemaker, First Class’ badge? Their forthcoming new single was premièred on Radio 1 last night and hit SoundCloud minutes later. We noticed blog posts about two minutes after it went up…it’s 3 minutes long! That’s clout (or magic)!

Anyhoo, the new track, Attracting Flies, is actually one of their best. It’s got the quirky R&B swing these guys do so well, this time with a heavier beat. A live favourite, Attracting Flies sees Aluna at her funniest. Not usually renown for her comedy skills, she spits (albeit in a velvety way) a razor sharp wit on this tune. Bringing a London Soul smoothness to the Electro loving masses, AlunaGeorge continue to have a storming 2013, if they keep knocking out tunes as danceable, catchy and filled with passion as Attracting Flies who knows how big they could become?

[Audio] Voltron & A.N.D.Y.

Taking their cues from the current wave of House and Electronic influenced R&B (or is that R&B influenced House and Electronic?) currently driving London crazy, and also from giant combining mecha lions, comes Belgian duo Voltron. This week they release their new single, Let Go, via Smile Recordings.

Sounding a bit like what would happen if AlunaGeorge spent a little too long in a Belgian EBM clubs, Let Go has got an underlying New Beat vibe but it’s mostly sumptuous, complex, rolling electronic Soul. Full of shifting rhythms, cut-up vocals and haunting electronic tones, oh, and a sudden distorted 909 kick. This is all wrapped up in a moody Pop sheen and in catchy vocal. Fellow Belgian A.N.D.Y. plays up the Housier elements for his sole reMix. Twisting the vocals into deep, involving Chicago warehouse jam.

[MP3] Alison Valentine’s ‘Warm Winter’s Day’

You may remember New York songstress Alison Valentine from her track Peanut Butter, and Moon Boots stunning reMix of it. She’s back this month with a new single, Warm Winter’s Day, and this looks like the one to gain the talented singer the wider attention she deserves.

Warm Winter’s Day, is a perfect example of inviting R&B flavoured ElectroPop. Imbued with that Chillwavey air so often found in New York’s ElectroPop output, reverby beats and toy town synths dance playfully about the track while Alison provides an intimate, personal performance. This would have made an awesome X-Mas single, but a month later it still delivers a warming electronic cheer.

[Audio] Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard reMixes Arlissa

The latest artist on the Alt Pop R&B train is Arlissa. Having recently scored a hit with a track featuring NAS, she’s about to release her début solo single. Stick And Stones is actually a pretty endearing slice of ElectroFolkSoul, that tends to get stuck in your head, and comes backed with reMixes from MJ Cole, Friction, Wookie and Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard. Not bad for her first single.

Goddard whips up a little of Hot Chip’s quirky ElectroPop magic into the the track. Replacing the tracks bombastic Folk with shrill synths and toy town beats, Goddard reins in the song somewhat, allowing it to become less of a grandiose performance, more of a personal affair. A bouncy synth bassline follows the vocals like a faithful dog while all around them shining keys ring out. All-in-all, a really nice experience.

[MP3] Cut Slack reworks Midnight Star

Here’s Portuguese outfit Cut Slack with a brand new track. This time it’s ‘80s electro Soul outfit Midnight Star that gets Cut Slack’s attention with their reworking of their 1986 classic Midas Touch.

Rather than a reMix, this track is a masterclass in how Edits should be done. Cut Slack have completely stripped back the vocals, leaving only a faint, processed, trace of the song to haunt the beats. then by highlighting the tunes dancefloor qualities, Cut Slack turn the track into the prefect Synth Disco groove. This track is full of the best in nostalgic electronic Disco. Big stabs, twisting synth riffs, a boogie down beat and load of head nodding attitude. One of the middle of the dancefloor.

[MP3] Soul II Soul reMixed by Follow Me

Let us begin by saying that, for various reasons, Soul II Soul have a big place in our hearts, so we approach reMixes with trepidation. When this version of Back to Life (However Do You Want Me?) landed in out inbox we were hesitant, but the fact that it comes from awesome Brooklyn duo Follow Me piqued our interest.

So, once you’ve got over Back to Life (However Do You Want Me?) without that modified Grand Central Station break (and that’s quite a hurdle to get over) Follow Me do an awesome job bringing the track to modern dancefloors. With a deep, deep bass groove Follow Me walk the line between House and SynthWave bringing a Warehouse vibe but a little of SynthWave’s retro flare. Adding some playful melodies, this duo somehow manage to retain some of the mood of the originals whist aiming it squarely at House parties. Follow Me have treated the original with respect and turned-in a fantastic update, you should check this out.
