[Audio] Annie’s ‘Back Together’

Annie

Here’s the first taste we’ve had of Norwegian ElectroPop songstress Annie forthcoming new EP. Titled The A&R EP, the release is so-called because of the A standing for Annie and the R for Richard X, who is on production duties for these new five tracks. The EP follows Annie’s last single Tube Stops & Lonely Hearts and looks set to be a lot more upbeat.

Little Boots has mentioned that she co-wrote some of the EP with Annie and if we had to guess, we’d say Back Together might just be one of hers. From a vocal arrangement point of view, it’s very Hands-like, Little Boots in full-on Pop mode. It’s a massive slice of ElectroPop with a brilliant 90s House piano riff, in fact it’s got quite a general 90s House vibe to it all over, but with Annie huskily dragging it into a more Pop territory. We’re looking forward to hearing the rest of the EP.

[Audio] Bryan Ferry’s ‘Don’t Stop The Dance’ reMixes (inc. Todd Terje, Punks Jump Up & Psychemagik)

Bryan Ferry

At the weekend, 70s/80s Roxy Music legend Bryan Ferry dropped an absolutely massive collection of reMixes of his 1985 single, Don’t Stop The Dance. It’s a classic tune that was ripe for reMixing and the line up he has picked to do the deeds is pretty impressive. There’s a whopping eleven reMixes in the package, including these three choice cuts from Todd Terje, Punks Jump Up and Psychemagik.

Terje’s take in the tune is truly sublime. Surpassing even his last encounter with Bryan Ferry (he previously reMixed the Ferry track Alphaville), Terje gets into a spiralling Cosmic Italo groove that is unrelenting for it’s whole ten minute length. Undulating arpeggios and chilly Scandinavian Disco beats clash with space age synths and Dubbed out vocals until the whole track coalesces into one big, tight, funky synthetic siren’s song. Punks Jump up deliver some of their particular brand of sax fueled, late 80s influenced, jump up House tunes. Introducing a bouncy synth bassline and swirls of intoxicating retro sounds and haunting horns, Punks Jump Up’s is definitely the one we’re most excited about hearing on the dancefloor. Blissed Out Nu-Disco hippy Psychemagik’s take on the tune wraps the original in a variety of vintage House sounds and a trippy Disco vibe. This is quite a package they’ve put together, and it sounds like these guys had a lot of fun playing with this tune, the results are certainly worth checking out.

[Audio] Duke Dumont’s ‘Hold On’

Duke Dumont

This is Hold On, British producer Duke Dumont’s follow up to his chart topping previous single Need You (100%). Whereas the Need You featured the vocals of A*M*E, this time it’s A*M*E’s old school friends MNEK’s turn to step up to the mic, because the London Pop/House producer scene is getting so incestuous and it had to be done. With his last offering hitting number one in the UK charts, expectations are high for this cut.

Swaying a lot more toward the soulful and the House than the post-Disco Boogie/Chicago House mix of Need You, Hold On is more thoughtful. A smoother, more laid back sound is presented here with slick beats and warm tones underpinning MNEK’s vocal ensemble-esque performance as it rides the double-tap snare. Gorgeous vocals and sumptuous production could land Dumont his second smash hit.

[Audio] Tensnake’s ‘See Right Through’

Tensnake

This Friday just gone, Pete Tong presented the world première of the new single from German House superstar Tensnake, on his Radio 1 show. See Right Through features Fiora on vocals and delivers some prefect, summery, chilled vibes. It’s Deep House enough to get lost in and Poppy enough to chart, with a classic vibe that, spiritually if not musically, reminds us of dance music’s mid-90s heyday.

This one’s all about lazy, shuffling beats with a Garage swing and hazy synths that you can’t help but sway to. Walking a nice line between laid back and jump-up, this is a track that we’d love to encounter either in a felid with a thousand other revels or on the headphones whist whistfully staring out of the window on a long coach journey. One of the head and the feet.

[MP3] Mereki’s ‘Blue Lake’

Mereki

We first featured LA songstress Mereki’s Blue Lake back in November last year, when it was still in it’s demo form. The voice of Miami Horror drummer Aaron Shanahan’s Good Night Keaton‘s Next To Mexico and Goldroom’s Only You Can Show Me, not to mention the voice of Goldroom live and Josh’s long-serving touring partner, looks set to be generating quite a bit of interest with her solo offerings.

We’re not going to repeat ourselves too much about the track, you can read our initial thoughts here, suffice to say Blue Lake is a majestic slice of sing-a-long summery ElectroPop that brings to mind the excitement of those first Ellie Goulding tracks, before she got bland. This final version of the track sounds a lot tighter, the drums are a bit beefed up and the synths a little more powerful. Also, the addition of a wailing guitar solo came as a bit of a surprise, not sure how needed it was really, but there it is. Mereki is definitely one you should be watching.

[MP3] Fear Of Tigers reMixes The Sound Of Arrows

The Sound Of Arrows

One from the vaults, as it were. This one must be at least a two years old, but for “some reason of other” (Stefan’s words) this reMix of The Sound Of ArrowsThere Is Still Hope by Mr. Fear Of Tigers never saw the light of day, until now. The track is taken from The Sound Of Arrows début album, Voyage, from 2011 and judging from Fear Of Tigers reMix style, we’d place it around then, if not earlier (if it was originally destined for a pre-album single). But we don’t care, you’ll know that The Sound Of Arrows and Fear Of Tigers are kinda’ like electronic rumors extended family, so one reMixing the other, no matter how old, hits us with a bolt of excitement lightning.

We love it! It makes us so nostalgic for those couple of years when these guys both released their prémier albums. If you’re looking for that kind of epic ElectroPop, defined by powerful beats, huge sweeping synths, uplifting melodies and just a hint of retro cool, that made the tail end of the last decade such an exciting time then look no further. Stefan’s impassioned vocals and Ben’s ability to inject an emotional rush into dance music are on display to their fullest here. Makes us miss all these guys, we hope they come back to release something soon.

[Audio] Russ Chimes reMixes Laura Welsh

laurawelsh

It’s not out until next month, but stop what you’re doing and listen, there a new Russ Chimes reMix in town. This time the man has turned his considerable talents to the forthcoming new single from London based songstress Laura Welsh, Cold Front. And you know we love a new Russ Chimes reMix, so lets dive in.

This one is turning up just as the British weather is looking like it’s actually becoming summer, which is spot on timing. Whist keeping things pretty deep, Chimes’ mix is optimistic and euphoric, without being in any way cheesy. It’s just a feel good House track with a deep groove. Welsh’s vocals are a sultry dream over the smooth club sounds. You can tell this is one of those tunes that, when it drops, the dancefloor seems to become one, unified in moving to the beat and the bass. Can’t wait to hear this in a club.

[Audio] Little Boots’ ‘LBD Edit’ of ‘Motorway’

Little-Boots

Little Boots Discotheque is ElectroPop princess Little Boots’ new dancefloor oriented live experience. Basically it’s LB and crew doing the ‘hunched over Ableton thing’, so if you get the chance to catch LBD live expect to be dancing your ass off to live edits and reMixes of Boots’ material. They are headed to Glastonbury this weekend, then the world!

To get a taste of what to expect, Vicky is giving away the LBD Edit of her recent single Motorway. Taking the spacious, Kraftwerkian original, this Edit makes the room even bigger and mixes up Dub and House for a hypnotic, intoxicating (nearly) eight minutes. Interestingly most of the vocals are kept intact (expect live vocals from a LBD performance) and now roll over a ebbing tide of noir beats and enigmatic synths. Bring the strobe lights.

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

First up, from 1986, is German SynthPop heroes Alphaville with Dance With Me.

Cee Farrow‘s Soul tinged SynthPop début, Should I Love You, from 1982.

And finally Belgian EBM outfit The Neon Judgement’s Chinese Black, from 1987.
