UK band Lovestarrs are the Rocky Balboa of the SynthPop world. They keep getting knocked down, and keep getting back up again. Sarah Mackintosh rose to critical acclaim as The Good Natured; starting with her Grandma’s old Yamaha keyboard and ending up as one of Britain’s most hotly tipped Indie-Electro acts. Juggling moody lyrics and a Gothy aesthetic with catchy and rousing ElectroPop tunes, The Good Natured were one of the more interesting and unique acts in a saturated mid-2000’s scene.

The the setbacks begun. Signing to Parlophone seemed like a good thing at the time with the backing of another EP and the announcement of the forthcoming album, to be titled Prism. A good thing short-lived though with the news, after a period of quiet, that The Good Natured had been dropped from the major and had spent the previous few month trying to secure the rights to the Prism masters; to no avail. The album was buried, and The Good Natured died.

In our opinion, this is the biggest dick move a major label can pull. We’ve seen it happen before and we’ll see it happen again. We don’t understand why, if you’re dropping an artist, you can’t just let them release their recordings. Sure, you’ve paid for them; so let them release them themselves and take a cut (surely that way at least you get something back for the recordings you paid for rather than nothing at all). It makes no sense to us and largely just comes across as spiteful.

Anyhoo, you can’t keep a good act down; and with almost a middle finger to the music industry, Sarah came bursting back on our radar as the bombastic Lovestarrs. Backed by her brother Hamish, Sarah’s new output was buoyant and optimistic. Pink replaced back and exuberance replaced gloom; and their début single, Get Your Sexy On, was a party fuelling manifesto proclaiming that Lovestarrs was a different beast to The Good Natured, keeping the lush SynthPop textures but washing them in a lavish, colourful nostalgia (epitomised by 80s Love Song, one of our top tunes of 2014).

Now staunchly DIY (and who can blame them) despite working with indie label Defdisco, Lovestarrs have set up a Kickstarter campaign to cover the release of their next two EPs and début album. The plan is to pay for the releases themselves, and licence them to Defdisco. The desire to pay for, and own, their own records is completely understandable coming from a band who had the last album they recorded held hostage. It’s one of the worthier Kickstarter campaigns we’ve come across. These guys deserve to own their own music, we can imagine how heartbreaking it was to record your début album and then have it disappeared by gangsters.

Lovestarrs are serious about this too; one of the rewards (in exchange for a shit ton of money!) is Sarah’s Grandma’s aforementioned Yamaha keyboard!

The duo have been releasing teasers of what to expect from the releases, you will hopefully find it in your heart it help out with, on their SoundCloud page in the past couple of weeks. From the chant-a-long fun of WTF to the robotic rabble-rousing of Frank Sinatra the album sounds like it’ll be wearing it’s 80s influences on it’s sleeve. Tracks like Somebody Like You sound classic Sarah Macintosh (whether The Good Natured or Lovestarrs) while the likes of Good Girls sound like the will bring something new, and more contemporary, to the table.

Just do it. Go and contribute. Lovestarrs deserve this and, goddammit, we want this album released.

[Audio] Bit Funk’s ‘Off The Ground’

Brooklyn based groover and all-round nice guy Bit Funk is kinda’ considered somewhat the ‘producer’s producer’. Alongside being a big chunk of the Nu-Disco scene’s go to mastering engineer Bit Funk makes the kind of tune that make other producers say “damn”.

He’s been around for a while too, first coming to prominence around 2009 and since then racking up some top reMix and production credits, with some pretty big names, but his own original releases have been far too rare; the last one must have been 2013’s Soul Satisfaction, the man’s gruelling touring schedule must be something to do with that.Thankfully, for us, though when the man does release a new original tune it’s generally something to be excited about as he mashed genres and brings the funk.

His latest offering is Off The Ground; a track for which he has enlisted the help of UK R&B vocalist Shea Jacobs to inject a little Pop flavour. It was released last week on Universal and looks set to be a slow burner that does big things.

Leading immediately with a soft piano hook and Jacob’s soulful vocals, Off The Ground pulls no punches in letting you in on what to expect. Uplifting and euphoric, with a warm comfortable groove, Off The Ground is effortlessly classy, breezing through with it’s dancefloor focused blend of Disco and Deep House. At it’s heart a Pop tune, Off The Ground comes complete with a catchy chorus and a heartfelt refrain, but works that around an array of modern club techniques, most noticeably a stonkin’ UK Deep House bass drop that pulls the track into a more Disco friendly Gorgon City type territory. Big, summery, anthemic stuff that you’re bound to be hearing more of in the coming months.

[Audio] Goldroom’s ‘Waiting To Ignite’

Stop what you’re doing, there’s a new Goldroom track in town. This is always a cause for celebration round these parts. Our history with Goldroom stretched back to the very beginning, and then keeps going. Josh’s previous outfit, NightWaves, turned in a track for the album that kicked off our record label, electronic rumors Volume 1 and before then we were staunch supporters of Josh and crew’s O.G. Dreamwave output. We even ran Binary Week, a seven day celebration of Josh’s record label. That Josh is the toast of the town these days makes us feel a little proud. It couldn’t happen to a nicer, or more talented and hard working, guy.

Speaking of NightWaves; as Josh is no stranger to re-recording his own songs, as evidenced with the recent Embrace version 2.0, we’d love to hear a Goldroom version of NightWaves’ Sweet Carrie. That would be so rad!

Anyhoo, on the Goldroom’s new single. Released on Friday (still hate Friday release dates, make no sense to anyone but the American music industry…) the track is called Waiting To Ignite and we co-written by American singer/songwriter Tinashe. As is customary, Josh as enlisted an up-and-coming vocal star for warbling duties, and this time it’s the turn of fellow LA resident Ren Farren to take a deep breath and step up to the mic.

Possibly the most Pop-House tune Goldroom has ever done, Waiting To Ignite might offer Goldroom his biggest commercial hit to-date. Jubilant, and incredibly optimistic, Waiting To Ignite spins all around it’s easy piano hook and raucous digital Disco bassline. The first Goldroom track that truly strays away from the nostalgia heavy beach Disco track we are used to and embraces glitzy, mirror-balled dancefloors. Ren’s vocals are just the right kind of engaging, really working the songs idealism while riding over Josh’s slick and easy going Disco-House soundtrack.

The awesome Continental Records (Jerry Bouthier’s baby) have just released their second single from French producers Romuald & Madji’k, a collection of reMixes following up their Stanza featuring Fastlane single. (check the MiGHty mOUse reMix for greatness). Alongside the release comes a brand new video for the track.

Directed by Romuald Lauverjon, the clip is a swirl of colourful retro imagery centred around a gorilla in a Porsche 911. Yup, a gorilla.

Back in June the Netherlands finest analog Disco merchant, Boogie DJ and all-round nice, smiley, fella; Auxiliary Tha Masterfader released the single Disco Machine. Disco Machine was his first release via Brixton dancefloor collective Nude Disco label arm. We said “Sounding authentically like an early 80s European dancefloor hit, Disco Machine sets up all the genre’s tropes for Aux to give them his own person spin. Synthesizer gold.” Did you hear that? Synthesizer GOLD!

Aux’s music is for people who love synthesizers, for people who love the history of European dance music; Italo, Boogie, Disco and beyond, and for people who from whom dance music is about more than the drop.  It’s music for those souls who can be taken to other planets, losing themselves in the robotic ebb and flow and the dancefloor. Aux is a man with a passionate love of vintage dance music and a hardware studio to be envious of; a killer combination.

This month Nude Disco released a companion to Disco Machine. It’s titled Disco Machine: Italo Edition. That’s pretty straightforward in terms of titling. This new release, as you’d expect unless you were painfully inept, featured four of the modern synthetic Disco scene’s brightest rising stars whipping up some mechanized Italo magic all over (the already quite Italo itself) Disco Machine. The Sanfernando Sound, Italo Brutalo, A Copycat and Rimini Rimmers all deliver pulsating reMixes of the track. Here’s a couple of fresh examples.

Manchester’s dark electronic overlord, The Sanfernando Sound serves up one of his special blends of classic EBM, mid 80s Italo and early Futurist SynthPop. Like that jacket you’re wearing brings out the blur of your eyes, The Sanfernando Sound can bring out the ominous, aggressive side of a track; his reMix is a pounding Italo juggernaut. Built on rock solid beats and factory floor basslines, this reMix strikes a nice balance between industrial Funk and uplifting grace with an airy lead line, accompanying the original’s vocoding, that glides across the mechanized dancefloor backing.

Italo Brutalo’s reMix is, ironically, not as brutal as The San Fernando Sound’s. A shuffling and skippy affair, Brutalo plays with the original’s groove with a syncopated bassline and a bit of a Pet Shop Boys vibe. Intertwining springy and flanged synth bass and choppy arpeggios all come together in a complex mix that presents as a deceptively simple whole. Multiple layers of rippling electronics weave the tapestry of a mid-80s Mediterranean dancefloor smash. This tune almost makes you see in VHS video effects.

[Audio] Pineapple Pop’s ‘RVLTN’

 

Pineapple Pop

Bringing some Mediterranean flavours to a springy House groove comes Turkish producer Pineapple Pop. First things first; we know, we know, Pineapple Pop is a strange old name; but thankfully that is saved by some seriously awesome music. The fruity chart-ster is actually Hemi Behmoaras,, one half of Paradisko (with Hakan Özkan A.K.A. Thousand Fingers) and, like Paradisko, the track is being released by the always amazing On The Fruit Music (actually, we guess name Pineapple Pop is a good fit for the label!).

Hemi’s début release is a single that goes by the vowel deprived moniker of RVLTN. We’re going to stick our neck out and presume that it is Revolution, or maybe Revoltin’, or even Rovolotono. You can just drop those vowels wherever and however you please, just as Pineapple Pop drops in some pretty eclectic influences into his classic House sound, serving up something to stand out from the pack in RVLTN.

A totally spot-on summertime jam, RVLTN warms up your ears and your feet with some relaxing summertime keys before flitting between lavish poolside sounds and deeper festival fodder. Maintaining a classic House sound at it’s core Pineapple Pop threads reverb washed vocal snatches and the kind of hook that makes you have to physically stop yourself putting your hands in the air (unless you are hands-in-the-air inclined, in which case go for it) through the track. The switching between head down full-on neo Deep House intensity and near Balearic sunrise greeting euphoria keeps the track energy levels high and varied until it’s Done.

Brooklyn based Nu-Disco producer (and electronic rumors Records go-to mastering engineer) Bit Funk turns in a whopping reMix. Riding a groove that harkens back to UK Garage and a buoyant bassline to pair with his luscious and nostalgic synth work. Gradually layering the track over it’s length, Bit Funk takes you on a dancefloor journey from skippy Chicago warehouse sounds to breezy LA Tropical vibes, all the time enriching the tune with an emotional connection and a rush of the good feels.

For today’s mixtape offering we’re presenting something a little different. Mixmag’s In The Lab videos on YouTube have been smashing it recently. You don’t have to sit there for an hour watching someone mixing (unless you really want to). Just stick them on your big TV and listen to them like you would any other mixtape, only now you get to occasionally glance across at the little DJ playing live in the corner of your room.

Brooklyn’s finest is back with another slice of thoughtful, robotic House music. AIMES has been a firm fixture on electronic rumors since he made his début. Sometimes an artist comes along with something about them that makes them stand out from the crowd to us; with AIMES there was both a musicality beyond his contemporaries and a crisp, synthetic, analog sound to his tunes, whether turning his attention to Disco, House or SynthWave his tunes were just that bit more electronic (which obviously appeals to us!).

AIMES has dipped his music toe into a number of genres in his career; but whether Chillwave, Nu-Disco or Indie-Electro his tunes are generally pretty recognisable as he gives the styles his own unique spin. Right about now he’s teamed up with Mexican label Trafico and gone a bit left-field for his latest single. It’s out now, called Dirtbox, and comes loaded with it’s B-side, Prophet Jam, and reMixes from Mexico’s Juan Soto and NYC’s Tunnel Signs.

AIMES keeps things on just the right side of weird on Dirtbox. Hypnotic and undulating, Dirtbox introduces you to the hook early on, amid a sea of hammerfall piano. The hook persists throughout the track, weaving in and out of a symphony of pads, strings and vocal snatches in a tapestry of mysteries dancefloor sounds. Jumping in with some good squelchy Acid riffs is just the icing on the cake. Dirtbox is a track that will draw you in and command you to dance, and even when it’s over it will be ringing round your head and leaving it’s shadow on your feet.

AIMEs is one of a small group of artists who manage to make records that are both full-on funky Disco and House, and yet are quite experimental and intricate in their use of sounds and arrangement. It’s a hard feat to pull off, but AIMEs does it with style.

[Audio] Ben Macklin’s ‘Think Of Me’

We reckon you’d all know London based producer and all-round nice guy Ben Macklin by now. Not only one half of the UK’s answer to Chromeo, Cassette Club, but label boss and particularly talented producer in his own solo right too. Ben delivers the sound of the summer each and every time with warm, laid back tunes that draw on the wealth of Disco, House, SynthWave and SynthPop. Ben’s tune are just…nice. we’re not sure of there’s a better word to describe them, like a sunshiney afternoon spent with good friends and good drinks, for four minutes a Ben Macklin production can make you forget your worries and let you sink into the comfortable groove.

The man is pretty prolific these days, even if there isn’t nearly as much new Cassette Club material as we would like going around. Regular releases have been coming out on his Modal label over the past year and a half or so. Barely a month goes by without a new single and, surprisingly these days, this hasn’t for a second translated into a drop in quality. Take his latest offering, Think Of Me. The track’s release has been perfectly timed to coincide with a break in the UK’s bizarre gloomy mid-summer period and as we write this piece the sun is blazing down and Ben’s new single is the perfect soundtrack. The release sees him once again teaming up with fellow Londoner Emma Brammer (of Dare and It’s Over fame) on vocal duties who’s smoky croon lends an air of enigma to the track.

For such a cosy tune, the bassline in Think Of Me is pretty spikey. A razor sharp digital Funk bass that would impose a robotic dominance over any other track, but Macklin tempers it with washes of glowing and intimate tones that breeze between lush pads and starlight chimes, all rolling over a solid, but unobtrusive House beat. Leading the way on Think Of Me is a soothing electric piano hook and Emma’s enticing vocal. As Ben peppers her voice with the occasional Dub-like effect to weave it in and out of the tune, Emma’s slightly melancholic holiday daydreaming carries you away as much as any element of the music. In the car, in the headphone, on the boombox, DJ’ed by the pool; this one should be enjoyed in the outdoors in good company.

If Think Of Me makes you want to relax in the sunshine, then AIMES stellar reMix of the track will have you heading straight to the dancefloor. injecting the tune with a little Boogie, a little Italo and a little vintage Disco; one of Brooklyn’s finest, AIMES, hits the end of those big snare rolls running with orchestral stabs and the unrelenting machine Funk of the reMixes’ machine gun bassline. Mid-way point the reMix explodes in a symphony of strings and intertwining synth lines, all perfectly crafted to keep the dancefloor energy at it’s highest. Hold tight for the killer synth solo! Likewise, German synthesizer head Final DJs (‘Final DJ’ goddamnit!) delivers a densely layered electronic odyssey.
