Grum reMixes Mary Epworth

Mary Epworth

After a period or relative quite,  Grum is back in the game. hot on the heels of his reMix from Lonsdale Boys Club a couple of weeks ago he’s keeping the momentum going with this new reMix for British singer/songwriter Mary Epworth. Epworth has already been reMixed by a host of awesome names and getting Grum in on the game, one of the pioneers of the Dreamwavey end of Nu-Disco, is the icing on the cake.

Grum’s reMix of ‘Long Game’ sees him continue to walk the part toward the a big room sound, not that he wasn’t always a purveyor of huge, uplifting tunes. If fact, I would go so far as to say this new sound Grum is flirting with is Nu-Disco in a Euphoric Trance mould, it basically has the arrangement of a hands-in-the-air Trance track but with more of a Disco groove, just a little bit more. Because really this is a big Trance track, and a really good one too, perfect for a peak time moment and Mary Epworth’s vocals play right into that. Grum is going huge, the future is his.

Grum reMixes Lonsdale Boys Club

Lonsdale Boys Club

Grum is back! Frankly we could just leave the whole post at that but I suppose we can’t really. It;s been a while since the Scottish producer dropped anything, which is a shame ‘cos everything he;s dropped so far has been gold, his ‘Heartbeats’ album of 2012 still gets heavily rotated here.

So, Grum return to us is heralded by his reMix of London Indie-Pop trio Lonsdale Boys Club who we don’t know much about save for they look really irritating. Their track ‘Light Me Up’ seems to be one of those middle-class-boy-get-a-bit-rowdy tiresome things which, luckily, becomes a work of art in Grum’s hands. The man delivers a slick DiscoPop epic that the rest of the internet seems to be saying is a lot more commercial than his previous work, but I don’t really see that. I think Grum has always had an ElectroPop streak to his synthy Nu-Disco and that’s in no way a bad thing. Here he shows he’s lost none of his Midas touch.

Grum reMixes The Good Natured

Sweet electronic X-mas! The Good Natured is one of my favourite Indie-Electro artists, and Grum one of my favourite Nu-Disco producers. The two together? Only good can come of this!

The results are pretty stunning, Grum makes the absolutely correct decision to keep most of the song structure and Sarah’s vocals intact, letting his massive sounding Nu-Disco groove support the track rather than obscure it. What you have in the end is an amazing meeting of Ms. McIntosh’s emotive voice and Grum’s body moving beats and soaring melodies. I love it when a plan comes together!

Grum on the reMix with Nightriders

Nightriders’ new record ‘Get Hooked’ came out this week and the single includes a stunning reMix from Grum.

His version of ‘Get Hooked’ is a massive mash-up of hands-in-the-air influences, featuring the energy of early 90’s rave, some euphoric trance riffs, but none of the inherent cheesiness as the whole thing is wrapped up in a big room tune. Only Grum could make Euphoric Trance lines sound cool again.

Urchins’ ‘Xylophobe’

‘Xylophobe’ is the new single from Lincoln duo Urchins.

Released last week on Cheap Thrills, the single’s two tracks are a couple of sunny summer House tracks with some nice Balearic beats but it’s the reMixes where things really start to shine. Grum’s reMix of the title track is a surprising, exciting robotic Disco jam with am unrelenting hook. Or take this reMix from Gamble & Burke, a blog exclusive now appearing on the single package, morphs the track into a smooth, good times, ElectroPop track.

Pet Shop Boys…Grum…West End Girls…awesome!

Well, this is already vying for position as my favourite track of the year, it feels like I’ve been waiting all my life for this tune.

Nu-Disco über-producer Grum’s reMix of Pet Shop Boys’ ‘West End Girls’ features as B-side on the SynthPop duo’s new single ‘Together’ and, for me anyway, it’s an almost perfect meeting of everything I grew up with and everything I love now. I love the big analog bassline and the massive Dreamwave-esq pads and the fact that the song remains intact, but totally updated. This thing is one of the classics of the genre but sound fresh as fuck!

Pure, undiluted awesome!

Pet Shop Boys – West End Girls (Grum reMix)

I swear I can hear a Korg Monotron in there too!

Pet Shop Boys greatest hits, ‘Ultimate’, and the digital single of‘Together’ are out now with the physical release, featuring the Grum reMix, coming soon.

Grum; ‘Through The Night’ reMixes

We’ve already featured the pretty hilarious video for Grum’s forthcoming single ‘Through The Night’, one of our favourite tracks from hid début album and now we are able to bring you a couple of reMixes from the forthcoming release.

First up is electronic rumors staple Beaumont’s contribution to the reMix package is of the quality we’d expect from the man. A smooth jam that takes the Toto sample and works it into a mash up between the equivalents of some of Jan Hammer’s incidental music for Miami Vice and an Ed Banger floorfiller. Excellent work as always. Belgian Electro Rocker Perseus take a more pure Nu-Disco route, with a nice bit of French Touch and some Disco licks.

What I like about both these reMixes is that they are prime examples of why I love reMix culture these days (amongst the Nu-Disco/Electro-House/Dreamwave scenes anyway), the level of musical ability required. No longer is it acceptable, as it was 5 years ago, so simple lay down a beat and a couple of arpeggios under an acapella and call it a reMix (the amount of people who got rich doing that is unbelievable!). These days if you want to stay up with the cream of the crop were talking about writing basslines, writing lead lines…writing music!

It’s all good!

Grum’s ‘Through The Night’ video

Now it’s got a video, and it’s pretty hilarious.

‘Oh No!’ it’s Marina And The Diamonds AND Grum!

Marina And The Diamonds has just premiered the video for her new single ‘Oh No!’.

Directed (again) by Kinga Burza the video has Marina once again shaking off record company clown-shoes to be who she wants to be.

The single is backed up with some great reMixes, most notably from one of the hottest producers around, Grum, who has taken time out from basking in the success of his amazing début album to work his bass heavy Nu-Disco skills on Marina. Max Sanna and Steve Pitron turn in a more traditional club mix that could take over the clubs this summer.
