[Download] Patrick Baker’s ‘Lies’

patrick-baker

While we generally dig Patrick Baker’s featuring appearances on everything that was ever released between 2012 and 2014, it’s always a lot more exciting to hear one of his own tunes. This is Patrick Baker as he was meant to be heard, his own vision. Patrick Baker: the director’s cut. The man has slowly but surely been making the transition from 80’s SynthWave Popster to smooth 90s soulful crooner and this new tune, Lies, is the epitome of that sound.

Smooth and slinky, Lies, mixes up a growling 90s R&B groove with a hint of Swingbeat and a little dusting of Disco. A slo-mo opus to drift across city rooftops at the peak hour of the night. A hot summer vibe, made up of chiming keys, warm tones and a solid dance beat, compliments Patrick’s soulful voice. This is one for putting your feet up, forgetting the world and letting the silky sounds envelops you. Super chilled stuff.

[Audio] Little Boots’ bootleg of Todd Terje’s ‘Inspector Norse’

Little Bootleg Todd is so hot YouTube

Little Boots returned this this weekend to bring a ray of sunshine into our lives in the form of this cheeky bootleg of Norwegian Cosmic Disco king Todd Terje’s now legendary Inspector Norse. We’re not really sure what it’s called; it comes from a mixtape Boots did for Vice’s Thump website where it is noted in the tracklist as ‘Todd Terje – Inspector Norse (Little Bootleg)’, whereas she uploaded it to YouTube under the moniker ‘Little Bootleg – Todd Is So Hot’. So we’re calling it ‘Todd Terje (Feat. Little Boots) – Inspector Norse (‘Todd Is So Hot’ Little Bootleg)’, which we think nicely covers all the bases. Also; ‘Little Bootleg’ is genius.

Boots delivers an edit with a twist. Well, if you’ve got a voice like Victoria then why wouldn’t you sing all over stuff? Taking Inspector Norse, and already incredibly and catchy-as-hell- tune, to the next level, Little Boots lends the track a floaty layer of vocals, exceptionally suited to the burbling dancefloor groove. Terje delivers vintage, cosmic and quirky while Boot’s serves up shiny, glamorous and mirrorballed; the two work together perfectly. We’d love this to be released!

[Audio] JBAG & Kamp!’s ‘Through Blue’ (+ Holmes Price reMix)

jbag

London’s premier ElectroPop duo JBAG are back in business, and this time they are dragging Polish SynthPoppers Kamp!’ along for the ride. Out today on Jerry Bouthier’s own Continental Records is Through Blue. The comes with a packed collection of reMixes that includes work from Holmes Price, Jay Lamar & Jesse Oliver and Venice Beach. Get ready for some deep and enveloping grooves.

Through Blue sees JBAG testing the waters of Deep House and folding it into their sassy DiscoPop sound. Weaving robotic and bassy synth sounds into a soulful and emotional sonic tapestry, JBAG offer up some seriously warm summer sounds. Kamp! singer Tomek Szpaderski’s low key vocal style add to the laid back vibe of the track, his subtle croon sharing time with the chiming leads. Holmes Price’s take on the tune injects a little vintage piano House into proceedings. A euphoric symphony of 90s House sounds, frenzied purcussion and filtered vocal snatches, Price’s reMix grabs the track and drags it straight to the dancefloor, and we’re happy to go along with it. The whole EP is definitely worth you checking out.

[Audio] Starsmith’s ‘Now I Feel Good’

starsmith

Premièred on Radio 1 by Pete Tong on Friday, here’s the new single from producer extraordinaire Starsmith. This is his second single of the year, which is a lot for Starsmith! To be fair to him though he does divide his time between writing music and producing some of the biggest and best ElectroPop acts on the planet. Now I Feel Good features the vocal talents of the generally amazing Clare Maguire and you can check out the tasty Club Mix below.

This tune has got all the hallmarks of a big Starsmith production, the big beats, the punch basslines, the layers of rich keys; with the added bonus of Maguire’s impassioned delivery. The rising, euphoric, synth lines really power the track along, razor sharp in their production and provide a nice ride for the ultimately optimistic vocals travel on. We can’t work out if this is perfect Pop, or perfect Big Room. Probably both.

[Audio] Foreign Boy’s ‘Dance Like A Light’

Foreign Boy

Out this week via Nude Disco comes the début EP from London’s Foreign Boy. We’ve been quite eagerly awaiting this release ever since he teased us with the slick BedroomPop tune Desperately Broken. The EP’s titled Dance Like A Light and holds four original songs and a reMix of the title track which all present a journey through the funkier side of retro electronics. Check out the title track and the reMix from Boysinadisco below.

Dance Like A Light is a full-on ‘jump up and dance’ track, awash with heavy layers of Italo and Boogie. It’s a surprisingly stomping tune after the introspective Desperately Broken, but still takes it’s cues from the most energetic of 80’s Pop. In five minutes of rapid fire basslines and shimmering synth riffs a vocoded dancefloor command becomes a mirrorball mantra that is easy to obey. Spanish duo Boysinadisco give the tune a Nu-Disco spin with their reMix, injecting the tune with a cheeky Disco licks and a blissful little lead line. Their mix manages to take the tune into heavier territory without loosing the original’s sense of fun. The whole EP is a strong début that makes Foreign Boy as one to watch.

[Audio] Charli XCX’s ‘Boom Clap’ reMixed by Aeroplane

Charli-XCX

What’s better than a Charli XCX track? Not a lot, but maybe a Charli XCX track reMixed by Belgian Disco don Aeroplane? The French Touch O.G. has taken Charli’s track from the The Fault In Our Stars soundtrack (and soon to be her next single) Boom Clap, and given is a supremely slick dancefloor workout, just short of cheesy, this is the bounciest thing you’ll hear all day.

This reMix is textbook Aeroplane, suited to the dancefloors of 2009. That’s no bad thing, it’s a classic sound that is bound to get the juices of any Nu-Disco fan flowing. It’s got those big French House synths that we all love so much stuttering out their eminently funky hook, and the punchiest of basslines to boot. Charli’s vocal mixture of smokey and shouty could have made for a strange combination, but Vito blends his irresistible good-times dancefloor gold with Boom Clap’s vocals like they were always meant to be. Here’s the start to your weekend.

[Audio] The Other Tribe’s ‘The Fear’

the-other-tribe1

Bristol’s finest electronic rabble rousers The Other Tribe have been flexing their musical muscles with their latest tune. Usually more known for massive summer festival anthems and pounding House tunes, The Fear sees The Other Tribe charting new territory and dipping their collective toe into the waters of something a little more smooth, and something a little more esoteric. Check out The Fear.

This new tune find The Other Tribe folding a little Future R&B, and a little Chillwave, into their dynamic electronic sound. James delivers a slick and laid back vocal performance over an undulating swirl of woody bass and hazy synths. It’s got that subtly hunting quality that the best Chillwave tends to have but looses none of The Other Tribes trademark tribal twist, here introduced via a selection of understated purcussion. The whole thin feels both synthetic and organic at the same time and makes for perfect sunshine chilling music.
