[Video] The Knife’s ‘A Tooth For An Eye’

Following on from Full Of Fire, Swedish ElectroPop Experimentalists The Knife’s second new video from their forthcoming Shaking The Habitual album is A Tooth For An Eye. It’s an undulating avant-garde workout, blanketed in warm tones and percussion.

The video, challenging gender roles, was directed by Roxy Farhat and Kakan Hermansson, gets their point across whist managing to me both mysterious and funny.

A Tooth For An Eye is taken from The Knife’s forthcoming album, Shaking The Habitual, released 8th April,

Kid Machine

I don’t think anyone who knows anything about Italo music could be in any doubt, Manchester’s Kid Machine is one of the top artists, not just in the UK, but in the world, producing records right now. In just a couple of short years, this exponent of a dark retro future has risen to the top of his game, even collaborating with the likes of the Legendary Flemming Dallum.

He’s got a new record out very soon, we’ll be featuring it in the coming weeks, but until them the Kid has dropped a track from his vaults. Prism hails from October 2011, which put’s it around Return To Space time. Prism is an energetic slice of dystopian dancefloor soundtracking. Part hyperactive synthetic groover, part haunting Sci-Fi soundtrack, Prism delivers on both counts. While your feet are moved by the relentless beat and cascading arpeggios, let your mind wander with the evocative leads and intricate, shuffling, little flourishes. Prism is a nice reminder of how good Kid Machine can be, ahead of his new release. Bring it on!

[Audio] Decibels’ ‘Ruza’, with Holmes Price and Tronik Youth reMixes

Decibels

Next month, British Electro-Art-Poppers Decibels release their new single. Ruza is a follow-up to last year’s acclaimed The Lesser, which received a fir bit of coverage and airplay. Ruza builds of that success to deliver a confident sequel that’s sure to fine appreciation amongst Indie and Electro fans alike, and with Holmes Price, Tronik Youth and Skeleton Army stepping up for reMix duties, there’s something for everyone.

Ruza is an ecclectic tune. Reminiscent of Hot Chip at their most playful with Clock Opera as their backing band. A rowdy orchestra of  rolling basslines and random percussion, all complimented with buzzing synths and rich pads. A listless vocal just adds to the breezy IndiePop feel, expect to be hearing this tune, a lot, over festival season. Holmes Price takes that airy groove and runs with it, whipping up a Tropical injection with a classic House core. If the original is a track for hot sunny days, this mix if for the nights that follow. Tronik Youth, on the other hand, take the track to a slightly grittier place with raw beats and riffs straight out of a grimy London warehouse. Joining them on the release is a classy House mix from Skeleton Army to complete a solid package. Look out for this one.

[MP3] Chaconne

Chaconne

This week new artist Chaconne stopped by the electronic rumors inbox to show off his tracks. We say new, he’s got stuff on SoundCloud dating back two years, but new to us at least. And we’re very glad he did, this Oxford based producer is turning out some of the beat late 80s Influenced SynthWave-with-a-House-and-Disco-swing we’ve heard in a while. It’s hard to know where to start with Chaconne, all of his tunes are top quality, be here’s a few of our standouts.

Heart To Heart is Chaconne’s latest work, and one of his best. Joining the dots between 80s Electric Soul and modern (retro) Disco and House. it’s like someone took a Five Star instrumental and re-edited it into a Nu-Disco floorfiller. Pure genius.  Loaded with a bouncy FM bassline, slick 80s stabs and pulsating digital brass, alongside a solid groove and washed with modern production techniques, Chaconne really does modernise a classic sound. This results is something that sounds authentic, rather than ‘inspired by’. Totally a 12” extended mix! This Last Dance is more typical SynthWave. A beautiful, emotional synthesizer piece with an Italo flavour and all the musical narrative of the best 80s soundtrack work. Rich in densely layered synths, This Last Dance lifts you up and drops you down in all the right places, subtly carrying you along in it’s moods. Romance And Revolution was another standout, a powerful, driving slab of nostalgic energy. Punchy bass, big piano chords and some shuffling Tervor Horn-esque lead lines build and build toward the tracks crescendo, a swirling symphony of vintage sounds. This is what SynthWave is like when it;s done by people from the UK, a little less Miami Vice, a little more The Bill, and that’s Top Of The Pops perfect for us.

[MP3] Rüfüs’ new single

Rüfüs

Australian Indie-ElectroPoppers Rüfüs are back with out first taste of what to expect from their forthcoming début album. The trios new record will be titled Atlas and is due out later this year. Our glimpse of the futures comes in the form of new single Take Me. The single comes with a packed reMix package featuring Cassain and AdaptOrDie.

Take Me sees Rüfüs ever further going down a Tropical Pop route. Upbeat Island percussion and chiming synths envelope this gentle, but catchy tune. The prefect tune for lazy summer nights. Fellow Aussie Cassain Houses things up a ton with a dark growling bass and atmospheric keys made all the more epic with an occasional haunting piano hook. The original’s breezy vocals take on a new smokey quality in this mix. AdaptOrDie a new project with a strong pedigree. When you consist of half of The Swiss and Empire Of The Sun’s backing band you know things are going to be a bit special. Their take on the track is a deep warehouse tune, a nice mix of Chicago sounds and European club music heritage. It’s a really nice package you could do worse that invest in.

[Audio] Mr. Gonzo & Romuald’s ‘Gon Be A Thrill’

Mr. Gonzo

This week French producer Mr. Gonzo, who we haven;t heard from in quite a while, released his new single Gon Be a Thrill. The track is a collaboration with Parisian singer of just about everything Romuald, and the two of the together cook up a slick, laid back Disco experience that is just right to hold on to until the summer months.

Gon Be A Thrill is pure sunshine ecstasy. Deep bass grooves and silky smooth synths life the track with an easy, breezy, feeling. Carefree and relaxed, the track is give an Indie-Electro edge with Romuald’s anthemic vocals. This one is built for slow-motion dancing in the sun.

[MP3] Modern Machines’ ‘Trouble’

Modern Machines

NYC’s Modern Machines return from a bout of touring with a storming new track. After a host of massive reMixes for the likes of The Knocks and CREEP the duo are set to deliver some killer original tunes, starting with Trouble.

Bringing to the forefront the Vera Hall sample that Moby rocked on Natural Blues, these guys take a completely different route with the vocals. Dropping them straight into an Electro Disco fire-pit of huge synth stabs, stomping beats and some madcap ChipTune wobbling. Big, uplifting hooks and a grinding bassline keep this track powering onward and destined straight for the big room.

Plane Shepard

Oh, Germany’s Final DJs always bring us the very best sweet sweet synthesizer music. This time they have been hand picked by Kris Menace’s renowned label Work It Baby! to deliver their reMxing good on newcomer Plane Shepard’s début single.

The track’s called Play With You, and Final DJs get deep into the groove with this five minute breezy anthem. Final Djs do love their soaring leads (as do we!), and right here they put them to work, sweeping over an Electro Boogie bassline and a hint of Tropical percussion. Like a far future dance party, this mix of Play With Me delivers all the energy and emotion you’d expect from a Final DJs tune, add in a little robovox and you’ve got a huge floorfiller. just wait for the finale!

[Audio] Embryonik’s new EP

EMBRYONIK

Out today is the new EP from one of Greece’s finest exports, Electro producer Embryonik. Titled Nightflight the EP is a six track journey through a synthesized, apparent plane crash. A concept piece of work that tells a story, instrumentally, carrying the listener through optimism to tension and then finally the EP’s finale, and lead track, Heaven.

Heaven is a bright slice of Italo with a sinister undercurrent. With a classic Italo bassline and rich synth tones, Embryonik captures both an emotion and a groove in this piece. Although the track is based around an upbeat vibe and loaded with shimmering synth chimes, there is a certain air of melancholy to it. But like all the best 80s tune, and all the best Italo music, it balances the Mirrorball and the sadness perfectly.
