Pilotpriest’s ‘Original Motion Picture Soundtrack’

Pilotpriest

Pilotpriest, an artist we were only vaguely familiar with, sent us an album with twenty five tracks on it. That kind of thing tends to make us shudder a little, but we had some stuff to do so we stuck it on. Two hours later we’d got nothing done, wondered where the time had flow off too, and were in love with Pilotpriest’s ‘Original Motion Picture Soundtrack’. Yes, you read that right, two hours! It’s a rare best that is that kind of length and at no point at all gets anywhere close to boring. I’m not overly sure how easy this album is going to be to review, it really is one of these records that has to be heard, I can imagine everyone taking something different from it and the overall work truly is an experience, one that has to be had, not read about. No writing I can do will do the experience of listening to this album Justice. It’s not just a collection of songs, it’s a narrative, it’s an artwork, and your relationship to it will be different to mine.

After a bit of digging around it turns out we were familiar with Pilotpriest! Do you remember ‘The Crash’? That ‘leaked’ track from from Daft Punk’s ‘Tron: Legacy’ soundtrack, that Kanye West raved about thatwas quickly proven to be a fake, but we said we liked it anyway? Well that was him. Whist the ‘leak’ was cheeky, Pilotpriest hides behind nothing on his new record, and he would have no need to, it’s an electronic masterpiece, a couple of hours of pure bliss for an fan of synthesizer music. ‘Original Motion Picture Soundtrack’ is a collection of instrumental electronic peices, some leaning toward experimental Sci-Fi compositions, some Disco tinged dancefloor tunes, all of them named after ‘80’s movie titles. The albums opener ‘Body Double’ is a twelve minute opus that lays down the law in regard s to what to expect from the album. Layers and Layers of analog synths, intertwining melodies, emotionally resonant chord progressions and a nod toward Italo dancefloors via a driving beat and bassline. The thread here, on such a lengthy album, is Pilotpriest’s sound. Where as the individual tracks on the record play out like a movie, each one encapsulating a particular mood or a particular occurrence, they all weave together effortlessly under the umbrella of Pilotpriest’s own stylistic sonics. Drawing from ‘80’s movie soundtracks, a lot of the sounds of  Italo dancefloors and electronic instrumentalists such as Jarre or Vangelis Pilotpriest creates an analog synthesizer soundscape that is as musically rich as it is damned funky. Of course, for someone who nearly out Daft Punked Daft Punk, there is also a fairly healthy injection of French Disco in here, but while at times you can hear a Daft Punk influence, it never sounds like he’s trying to emulate them when the album does veer into Disco territory. Mostly though it’s an amazing melting pot of atmospheres ranging from high-octane to quite and introspective, a true soundtrack to any moment in life. Pilotpriest’s musically it shines through in every corner of this record, lifting it high about his peers, this record isn’t a ‘production’, it;s a work of art. If you like soundtracks, you’ll love this album, if you like Disco, you’ll love this album, if you like Italo, you’ll love this album, if you like synth music, you’ll love this album. If fact, I can’t imagine anyone who reads this webzine not loving this album. Unsurprisingly, ‘Original Motion Picture Soundtrack’ comes highly recommended. Did I mention that it’s 99¢ (that’s about 68p for us in the UK)?

New track from Daroc

Daroc

Daroc is like busses, you wait ages for new tracks then loads come at once. Luckily we can never get our fill of new Daroc tracks, especially tracks like his latest drop. In tribute to French singer, songwriter and composer Éric Charden, who passed away earlier this year.

The track is a cover of ‘La Bataille d’Albator’, Charden’s theme tune to the Captain Harlock animé series (known as ‘Albator’ in France, and a favourite of Daroc’s as a kid) and is instantly recognisable from that riff. Daroc is the perfect artist to keep the Sci-Fi feel in covering something like this, he creates a moody electronic mood that is full of exciting promise. Deep, dark, warping synth sounds counter optimistic melodies in a track that is a magical combination of French electronic music and French melody, Japanese theme structure, Futuristic SynthWave and just a hint of Disco. Daroc is on such a roll these days, we can;t wait to hear what he has in store for us next.

Clancy’s new single

clancy

It’s always a good day when something pops-up to tell you you’ve got mail from Rich Clancy, he always brings us the very best Dreamwave and Nu-Disco. But here’s we are with his new single, ‘Lightbox’ and it seems that the man has shrugged the Dreamwave and Nu-Disco aside, for this release at least, in favour of something altogether deeper, something more Housey.

And it works for him, not that his production chops were ever in doubt, and going back to his last release, the chilled ‘Bring You Joy’ a few months ago, you can kinda’ see the Disco to House progression occurring. So what does ‘Lightbox’ hold? Well, it’s a classic dance track, we’re definitely hearing elements of early ‘90’s House in there, it’s got a very Orbital sunrise feel to it. It’s an intricately crafter tune, with many layers going on, all of which sit together effortlessly and it’s probably the best thing we’ve heard this year on the blissed out House tip. If Clancy is releasing a string of singles over the summer the this summer could end up being extremely chilled and pretty euphoric,

The Penelopes reMixed by Gigamesh & Style Of Eye

The Penelopes

No sooner had ElectroPoppers The Penelopes premiered their forthcoming new single ‘Summer Life’ than we are treated to this first reMixes of the track, from Dreamwave genius Gigamesh and Swedish bass master Style Of Eye.

Style Of Eye’s mix is a big droning bass monster, balancing the airy nature of the track and his own high-octane Rave but combining floaty arpeggios and storming hands-in-the-air synths he turns the ElectroPop track into a full-on party starter. Gigamesh, on the other hand, wows us with his slick Disco. Giving the track a little extra Funk, Gigamesh layers infectious bass with waves of shimmering synth work and truly makes a track for the summer. The use of the vocals, tailored to Gigamesh’s tune, switches the track around a little, whist the original was for lazy reminiscing, this mic is for dancing in the sunshine. We’re really looking forward to seeing what else the reMix package holds.

Goldroom & Kelek

OK, so this is the third reMix of Goldroom and Chela’s ‘Fifteen’ we’ve featured this week, I think we’re going to tone it down a little from here on in. From now on reMixes are going to have to be pretty fucking outstanding for us to feature them, not that we wouldn’t feature anything less, but y’know, the bar for being featured has just gone up.

But we’re really diggin’ this mix from German producer Kelek. We’ve featured a few of his reMixes before, we love his slick ‘80’s Italo sound. What he’s done here that has particularly captured out imaginations is, either by chance or design, change the rhythm of the chorus. Now, most of the time when rEMix do this it;s a disaster, producers miss the ‘breath’ on the first beat or something and throw the timing off in terrible ways. Kelek’s shift of the chorus actually works though, and works well. It give the vocals a lazy drawl which kinda’ ties into the hazy reminiscent vibe of the track. Add to that Kelek’s rolling electronic track with it’s laser pads and bright lead line, it successfully captures the heart of the track, but in a very different way to the original.

Hailing from Virginia Beach in the Us comes producer koi.. He’s just released a full length album of laid back, funk infused sounds. A heady mixture of Dreamwave, Lo-Fi, SynthWave,  Tropical Disco and Chillwave, koi.’s ‘Maelstrom’ is the prefect soundtrack to lazy, dreamy summer days.

‘Maelstrom’ contains ten tracks of instrumental, synthesizer, bliss. Layers of warm, comforting synths and a general all round felling of good times. Nothing too stompy for the dancefloor, this is music to chill with your nearest and dearest to. Can I say ‘bliss’ again? Bliss. ‘Cos it is. From the album’s opener ‘Beirut’ you are treated to waves of shimmering sounds, rich buzzing pads, sharp and precise leads and the tiniest bit of funk in the rhythm section. The album only gets warmer as it progresses. Straight into ‘Gauss’ you are dropped right into the nostalgic dreams conjured by this record. In it’s concept and delivery this is such a confident début, not once does it struggle to find it’s feet, and when a record rests on such an emotional connection this is important. Even when it tries something different, like the jump up rhythm of ‘Jam’ or R&B flow of ‘Ginseng’, it is sure enough of itself to never break the smooth summery groove of the album as a whole. And the amazing thing is koi. has only been at this for six months, although I’m sure he must have been a musician for a while, this is a musicians LP. Talking the best from SynthWave and Chillwave and pouring into a Dreamwave mould, koi. has all the waves covered, so let his album wash over you.

Malibu B’s ‘Tropical Heat’

Malibu B

‘Tropical Heat is the latest tuned from Hungarian SynthWave producer Malibu B. The man has been riding high this year with a string of critically acclaimed tunes and cemented himself into the heart of the SynthWave scene with his smooth vibes and Miami Vice moments.

This new tune brings a little LA Funk to the mix with this relaxed tune that’s probably the most Disco thing Malibu B has released so far. Keeping both the slick ‘80’s vibe and the marina feel of his previous work, ‘Tropical Heat’, takes you to that sunset place, waves lapping around your feet. Only this time there’s a Disco injection. Malibu B is coming on leaps and bounds in terms of production, this mix in ‘Tropical Heat’ is pretty sweet, it’s quite a dense track, but everything is sitting nicely, which makes the whole thing the kind of track that allows you to just go with the flow.

Johnatron & Sferro’s ‘Frozen’

Johnatron & Sferro

Girlfriend Records continue their bid for SynthWave world domination, following Le Prix awesome ‘Cosmonova’ their second commercial (they have a long history of free releases) EP comes from Girlfriend head honcho Sferro and San Jose producer Johnatron.

‘Frozen’ is an rousing dance track that is build upon the DNA of SynthWave, Dreamwave and Italo with a health does of the atmospheric. The solid Italo beat and bassline make it unmistakably for the dancefloor, but the lush chords and the haunting vocal, that weaves it’s way in and out of the melodies, give it an otherwordly, dreamlike, quality that sees to wrap you up and sweep you along with it. The flip side, ‘Frozen’ is, well, it’s kinda’ like what Psy Trance would sound like if it was made by people who actually liked music. Hypnotic and ever evolving, but musical and sonically rich. The single conatins some beautiful artword from DW Design too.

The Penelopes’ ‘Summer Life’

The Penelopes

Here we have the brand new forthcoming single from The Penelopes. Picking up where ‘Sally In the Galaxy’ left off, ‘Summer Life’ is another breeze slice of French Pop that, frankly, doesn’t have a care in the world. It probably doesn’t even care if you like it or not, it’s having an awesome time regardless.

‘Summer Life’ does exactly what it says on the tin, this track sounds like how summer feels. Yet, you get the feeling throughout it all there is something slightly subversive going on, in a fun French way. From what we can glean from the lyrics, The Penelopes really love the summer, and really fucking hate the rest of the year. If fact, missing the summer to a Disco beat, Indie guitars and rich layers of synths is a pretty Dreamwave state of affairs, and while this track does show a lot of that LA vibe, there’s a lot of quirky European-ness in there too. An excellent combination we say!
