Van She’s ‘Idea Of Happiness’ video

Van She’s big comeback gets itself a big video. We were excited about the song, will we be about the video?

The video for ‘Idea Of Happiness’, directed by Andreas Nilsson, is a bit bizarre, but pretty funny, and kinda’ works with the track.

Van She’s new album will be out 9th July on Modular Recordings.

Figure Of 8 reMixes Sullivan & Gold

artworks-000020871830-mqax22-original

According to their bio for the Stripes & Stars festival (one of the scarce few peices of information about them online), acoustic duo Sullivan & Gold “is more a collective than a band aiming at making music that they enjoy”, aside from the fact that I’m not entirely sure two people can really be a collective (pretension alert!), this hilarious lack of grammar makes it sound like these two guys are dedicated to making music they hate. Never mind, here’s something to cheer them up. Figure Of 8 has reMixed their track ‘Jigsaws’.

The the deal was that the Smalltown America label got Sullivan & Gold in the studio to record some music that they didn’t enjoy, along with Our Krypton Son, to be released as a vinyl EP backed with reMixes from Figure Of 8 and Dollface, and the whole thing would be completed in 24 hours. It’s quite a cool concept and a great opportunity to hear what talented musicians can come up with on the fly. Figure Of 8’s reMix was completed in around 8 hours and you can tell he had a lot of fun with it. Taking the acoustic folk and making something deeply synthetic, Figure Of 8 yet with tons of soul. The machine beats and robo-bass juxtaposing nicely with a real human quality to the sparkly synth work.

You can pre-order the vinyl here.

Check out more from Sullivan & Gold, well, nowhere because they have zero web presence, which might be due to the fact they aren’t a band making music they enjoy. Bless.

Fridge Magnets

Fridge Magnets are a Glaswegian/Aberdonian  Indie-Electro outfit who have just won best Electronic act at the Scottish Alternative Music  Awards and are now setting their sights  south of the wall.

Check out the video for their single ‘Death Of Rock ‘N’ Roll’ for a taste of what to expect in their big, anthemic, epic ElectroPop. It’s pretty rousing stuff with ballsy impassioned vocals and a nice mix of infections melodies and chainsaw synths.

If your in London this months you can check out Fridge Magnets on 18th April at Notting Hill Arts Club and 21st April at The Nest in Dalston.

Bastian’s Happy Flight’s ‘EOP01’

Bastian's Happy Flight

One of our favourite labels, the awesome Mullet Records is celebrating it’s 50th release, Bastian’s Happy Flight’s ‘EP01’ with a free download to promote the amazing reMix package it has in store.

‘EP01, the début EP from this Australian five piece is crammed full with eight tracks. Four Originals and four reMixes, all blissed out funky ElectroPop with a Disco twist. The lead track, ‘It’s OK’, is pure summer anthem material. A slick Indie-Electro backing for some seriously lush Dreamwave synths with rousing vocals and building layers of sound giving the tune an eipc quality. Of remaining the original tracks our favourite is ‘In My Mind’, a laid back slice of Disco laden soulful ElectroPop with synth bass and piano working together to create a sunrise vibe. The signature of the original tracks are funky electronic and powerful, emotive vocals, which proved an excellent jump off point for the reMixes. Amongst which are Dublin Aunts deep ‘90’s House take on ‘It’s OK’, with it’s hammering House piano, which managers to inject a little Disco into it’s retro club sound and Mullet head honcho Casio Social Club’s ‘Heavy Disco Edit’, which does exactly what it says on the tin. expect big bouncy synth bass and wicked Disco licks.

Stereowave

Stereowave

Stereowave are a duo separated by an entire continent. One in LA one in NYC who, thanks to technology, were able to pass tracks back and forth and put together a pretty special EP.

The only downside I can see to this situation is, on listening to Stereowave’s self-titled début EP, you come to realise that this is music meant to be played live. It’s big, powerful ElectroPop infused with a Disco funk and, and here’s where they differentiate themselves from the pack, an anthemic, almost Rocky structure.  It’s actually pretty hard to pinpoint exactly where Stereowave sit musically, there’s so much going on in terms of styles and influences. Once minute they will sound like big Scandinavian stadium SynthPop, the next they will drop some Disco strings or some Jazzy electric piano. It’s a ballsy EP, with a raw quality to it, amongst the soulful vocals and groove sit dynamic buzzsaw synths and EBM beats. So you see, it’s like Funky EBM, or aggressive Disco, or soulful Electro, or just PowerPop that draws it’s DNA from all over the electronic spectrum. Whatever it is, I bet it’s awesome live.

CHEW LiPS’ ‘Mini Mixtape Vol. 1’ (yes, that’s a new CHEW LiPS track!)

CHEW LiPS

CHEW LiPS – Mini Mixtape Vol. 1 = The awesome CHEW LiPS are hinting at their return with this ten minute minimix. It;s an eclectic selection of tune, but of particular interest here is the second from last track (right before the Um Bongo ad music!) is a brand new CHEW LiPS track, ‘Do You Chew’! And pretty special it is to, moody and imposing.

TEEEL & Selebrities

Selebrities

Rapidly becoming one of our favourite producers, the New Jersey based TEEEL cements his reputation even more by reMixing the awesome New Wave outfit Selebrities.

Taking ‘Forgotten’, Selebrities swirling mixture of Shoegaze and ElectroPop, TEEEL pulls back on the guitars and drops a huge electronic beat and layers of thick, lush synths. The track actually retains the same mood, the same dreamlike groove, but the added synths give it that cosmic edge and the variation in the drum pattern shake up the track.

MNDR reMixed by Azari & III

mndr

MNDR’s ‘#1 In Heaven’ is one of my favourite tracks of the year so far. It’s raw, catchy and in-your-face ElectroPop, so it’s definitely a good thing that they entrusted it to someone with such a track records as deep ‘90’s Housemeisters Azari & III.

Azari & III’s reMix an epic building, hypnotic track full a massive dose of Beep House (probably my favourite (defunct) House genre). it’s chock full of rattling 909 hats, square basses, resonant synths and a moody, intoxicating atmosphere that would have killed in late ‘80’s warehouse parties. Totally different from the original, Azari & III have made a powerful complimentary track.

MNDR – #1 In Heaven (Azari And III reMix)

‘#1 In Heaven’ is out now with MNDR’s full length album due out this summer, both on Ultra.
