Branded James reMixes Youngblood Hawke

YoungbloodHawke

We got sent the reMix of LA Indie bad Youngblood Hawke’s oft-reMixed We Come Running by American producer Branded James. We know next to nothing about Branded James, and that’s only a little bit less than we know about Youngblood Hawke, so if you don’t mind we’re just going to chat about the music for a bit.

For a producer out of the blue, this track is really good. Branded James nicely marries a Nu-Disco groove with lush Dreamwave synths and a warm retro feel. We’re really not that familiar with the Indie-Folk original, but these vocals work perfectly with James’ slick, optimistic, sound. Even the production is very solid. The mix is carried by some seriously airborne lead lines and punchy synth stabs, both having a nice nostalgic vibe to them that makes it feel like these vocals, that do have an anthemic quality to them, have always been part of this track.

Cassette Club drop EP of unreleased material

Cassette Club

Cassette Club, one of London’s best Disco tinged ElectroPop acts, and one of the most underrated synth outfits in the country, have just released a free EP of unreleased and older material. Five tracks of some of the finest, most soulful electronic music around right now.

Some of this collection we’ve heard before, some is new to us, all of it sounds fresh as hell, despite the odd track being a few years old. We looked in on Talk to Me a few weeks ago, a slick DiscoPop number that serves as a addition to this EP which kicks off proper with Don’t Go, a resonate, smooth jam that immediately strikes as being head and shoulders above a good chunk of UK DiscoPop acts right now, an opinion only strengthened as the EP slides into the retro synth Funk of Living In A Video. Living In A Video is pure class late 80’s robotic R&B, ElectroPop with a powerful Disco injection, it could give Chromeo a run for their money. Number Seven has more of an 80’s Pop soul feel to it, with heavy synth overtones, like a meeting of The Human League and ABC with contemporary production. The EP plays out on Bodylights, a fantastic closer and probably the slickest groove on the EP, this is a one-hundred-percent late night jam. Silky smooth and Moog Funk fuelled , Bodylights will leave you wanting more. Cassette Club have just given you a full EP, for free, that beats most of what you have paid for this year, it;s all old stuff too, just imagine what a new album from them would be like. We can’t wait!

Soldout’s ‘Off Glory’

Soldout

It’s been a while since Belgian ElectroPop duo Soldout have graced these pages, but here they are with their new release, Off Glory, released today. The follow up to May’s Wazabi, Off Glory sees the duo continuing to draw influence from classic European SynthPop whist updating it for the 21st century.

If fact, there’s a lot of classic synth music in Off Glory, most obviously the sound of mid-80’s Depeche Mode with the EBM-esque bassline coupled with shining, bell-like, chords. Drop this onto a Robo Disco beast and add some infectiously catchy vocals and you have one of the best pure SynthPop tracks released this year. Displaying just the right amount of brooding so as to appear deep, but not overshadow the dance vibe, Off Glory perfectly captures the sound of SynthPop past, without sounding like homage or parody, and makes it relevant.

AlunaGeorge’s ‘Watching Over You’

alunageorge

It’s that time of year, that time when the one and only Annie Mac releases her yearly Presents compilation. 2012’s edition of the awesome collection will feature this exclusive track from electronic rumors faves, and Robo-R&B ElectroPoppers AlunaGeorge.

Watching Over You features exactly the kind of dreamy, glitchy beats and sultry vocals we’ve come to love from these two. The prefect laid back tune, George Reid bass heavy, shattered grooves always walks the fine line between tuneful R&B and glitchy experimental dance. Too far either way and it just wouldn’t work, but he manages to perfectly balance the eclectic and the melodic, while Aluna has exactly the right voice to compliment. Smooth and soulful enough to carry the weight of the tune, but quirky enough not to sound out of place amongst the blips and beeps. AlunaGeorge have found just the right recipe.

Plastic Plates reMixes Strange Talk

strange talk

We featured Australian Indie-ElectroPoppers Strange Talk’s new single, Cast Away, a couple of weeks ago. Now were pretty excited by the fact that once of the reMixes for the track is provided by Plastic Plates, one of our favourite producers of recent years. Not only that, but the amazing reMix is a freebie!

Cast Away is a fantastic tune in it’s own right, upbeat and summery ElectroPop fun, but with the addition of Plastic Plates synth Disco sounds the track is unbeatable. The original has a hook just made for reMixing, and Plastic Plates takes that refrain and runs with it. It’s the bassline that kills on this one, PP is well versed in retro Disco bassline work and this one right here is no exception. Punchy and funky as hell, the bassline is one you just can’t help but move to. This bass excellence is layered with rich vintage synth work and Strange Talk’s summery vocal. It’s not summer anymore I think we have to admit that, but Plastic Plates’ and Strange Talk’s robotic Tropical sounds might just have you believing it still is.

Strange Talk’s new album is expected to drop next year.

Little Boots covers Bronski Beat

little-boots

When we got an email this morning, with the subject line declaring that Little Boots had covered a Bronski Beat track, a little voice in the back of my head was chanting ‘please be Hit That Perfect Beat, please be Hit That Perfect Beat’. It’s not. It’s Smalltown Boy. A bit more of an obvious choice, but no less exciting, and probably better suited to Victoria’s talents.

Because I have to say, right now, that Vicky sings Smalltown Boy better than Jimmy. That’s a terrible thing to say, I know, but it’s true. She completely makes this track her own, vocally, the track seems to have been written for her, and she really brings her A-game. Musically the track has been lifted into a huge ElectroPop missile aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Peppered with haunting piano, set amidst the Disco-House beats, this cover seems to miraculously play into all Little Boots strengths. Hit That Perfect Beat might not have, so things probably turned out for the best. If you missed it last week, here’s Boot’s reMix of Jupiter’s Juicy Lucy (Needs A Boogieman) too.

The Sweeps’ ‘Optimistic Melancholic’

The Sweeps

Emerald & Doreen are fast becoming the name to keep an eye of for retro ElectroPop and classic sounding Italo tracks. The newest addition to their catalogue is the new single from German Italo purists The Sweeps. Optimistic Melancholic comes crammed with reMixes from some of the hottest names, past and present and a Sci-Fi groove for every occasion.

Optimistic Melancholic is a brooding ElectroPop track, pitch perfect for a circa 1984 sound, that balances mysterious,  a vintage Disco beat and bassline, and duelling male and female vocals. A galactic Italo track, full of futuristic promise and nostalgic grooves, Optimistic Melancholic is retro Pop at it’s finest. The EP’s line-up of reMix talent is just as impressive. Italo godfather Flemming Dalum delivers a pacey, arpeggiator loaded mix that morphs the tune into a Moroder-dancefloor gem that guaranteed to hold the interest of all who hear it. It keeps the mood of the song, whilst raising the energy levels, making it ripe for any DJ set. Russian SynthWave up-and-comers Hot Hot Hawk take the track to deep, pulsating, retro soundtrack territory. Juggernaut basslines on rapid fire are tempered with shimmering synths and the original’s gentle vocal to create an exciting electronic opus. Elsewhere on the single you’ll fine work from  Go Nogo and Thomas Barrandon, Optimistic Melancholic as a whole is a quality electronic release, and goes to proove why emerald & Doreen are really delivering something exciting for fans of synthesizer music.

Pati Yang’s Hold Your Horses has finally got itself a video, the Scandinavian tinged Indie-ElectroPop track gets some suitably stark visuals.

It’s quite a typically Indie video, but luckily works well in this instance.

Aeroplane reMixes Kimbra

kimbra

We’ve been supporting out second favourite voice from New Zeland, Kimbra, since day one, well, since her dodgy MySpace page anyway. So it was pretty satisfying this year when she blew up and scored a worldwide number one record in the form of Gotye’s Somebody That I Used to Know, even if we never want to hear that song ever again. We would have preferred Settle Down or Cameo Lover to have blown up, but he can have our fingers crossed her album Vows, will see a new level of awareness with a forthcoming reMix campaign, including this reMix of Two Way Street by non other than Aeroplane.

Well, what can you expect is going to happen here?, Two Way Street is a cool track, so give it to someone like Vito and magic is going to happen. This track is tight as hell, Aeroplane suitably teases the signatures of the track into a Housey Disco tune. Not too in-your-face, the reMix feels completely at ease with the vocal, folding a relaxed Disco beat and familiar, warm, synths into a huge chunk of chilled vocal gorgeousness.
