Strangers’ new single

strangers

London SynthPop troupe Strangers are back with their first single of 2012, and they are kicking off the year in bombastic style.

Like their previous works, ‘Shine On You’ encapsulates that particularly ‘80’s contradictory mix of deep melancholy and uplifting hopefulness. Everything about Strangers’ sound is getting bigger and bigger, more euphoric. Powerful drums, huge chords and sparkling synths make up this giant SynthPop anthem. Whereas to date Strangers could have easily draw comparisons to HURTS, now it feels like there is something of The Sound Of Arrows in the mix, and the combination of the moody Dark Pop and the explosion of optimistic childlike wonder makes for a really compelling, emotional and satisfying music experience. this could easily be Strangers’ mainstream breakthrough.

Tako Tomago

I’m really not sure where to start with newcomer Tako Tomago. there’s not much avenue to put his music into words, all I know for definite is that it’s pretty damn enjoyable to listen to.

So here goes…it’s kinda’ like Glitchy Chillwave with elements of French Disco & Electro and Dub basslines, made out of R&B samples with the end result being played to you when you’re half asleep. It’s a dreamlike swirling of beats, basslines and half heard vocals. It’s music that does take some commitment to listen to, there a lot going on in these tracks and it’s stuff that isn’t always immediately apparent, but if you give it the time it deserves you;ll get a lot out of it. It’s chilled, with out being laid back, it’s loose and floaty whilst retaining a pretty solid groove and once you dive beneath the surface, there are some moments of musical and production genius to be found within these tracks.

Goin’ Old School: Eurythmics, Bronski Beat, Art Of Noise & Max Headroom

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

ZZT experimentalists The Art Of Noise teamed up with the best thing on TV in 1986, Max Headroom, and released ‘Paranoimia’, an ode to Max’s insanity.

Future basslines and vocoding in Eurythmics ‘Sexcrime (Nineteen Eighty Four)’, the soundtrack to the movie adaptation of Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, in, well, 1984.

Sommerville era Bronski Beat best tune, 1984’s ‘Why?’.

Bear In Heaven’s new video

Brooklyn based electronic Rock outfit  Bear In Heaven’s new single ‘Reflection Of You’ is a awesome head-on collision between NYC Indie-Electro and Dreamwave. It’s got the passion of Indie and the big synth chords of the LA retro sound, and the two make good bedfellows.

The video has just premièred on Vice’s Noisey YouTube channel and was directed by art collective, PFFR. I can help but think it would have been better if they had got, y’know, a good video director to do it instead. I think the zooms are supposed to be in time with the track.

‘Reflection Of You’ is taken from Bear In Heaven’s new album ‘I Love You, It’s Cool’ out this summer.

Jowie Schulner’s new tune

jowie-schulner1

Jowie Schulner has started the week with a serious treat for all fans of synthesizer music. He’s dropped a new track, ‘Suspicious’, and it it would make Jean Michel-Jarre proud.

Mixing up an laidback Italo groove with some fantastic lead playing, Jowie has put together a track for long summer nights, sunrises over the city and intense introspection. Basically, go sit on the top of a building in an urban jungle, at sunrise, and brood about something you regret with just a hint of hopefulness…this track will be the prefect soundtrack to that. Or you could just go and dance to it, y’know, whatever. Jowie sure does know how to make a synth sing!

Madeon’s new single

madeon

Semi-interesting tid-bit, our original post about French big room Nu-Disco wunderkind Madeon is our third most viewed article of all time! Since then, with a bit of promotion from Deadmau5 and a lightning fingered YouTube video the guy has blown up.

Listening to ‘Icarus’, his new single you are immediately remained why. I don;t want to dwell on “oh my god, how young is he to be producing like this”, but oh my god, how young is he to be producing like this. He’s got both the music talent and production ability of to take on any seasoned artist with years under their belt. ‘Icarus’ is pure French Touch, Disco gold, the guy knows exactly how to whip the dancefloor up into a frenzy, but keeps a beautiful musicality to his work too. Essential stuff.

Countach’s ‘Driven’

jordan-f

Countach, the new alter-ego of one of Australia’s premiere SynthWave producers Jordan F, is back with another new tune. ‘Driven is a powerhouse SynthWave tune with an aggressive EBM bass.

I can’t help but feel that if this is going to be your driving soundtrack anywhere, it’s going to be on the autobahn. A musically Germanic track, with the aforementioned EBM bass playing amongst hard drums and ominous chords. The only respite from the juggernaut being Jordan’s sky-rocketing lead line. We’ve been hearing more an more SynthWave and Nu-Italo drawing on old school EBM’s growling darkness recently, a lot of it I think in unintentional. It’s an unexpected turn of events, but one we will watch closely.

Justin Faust reMixes Picture Book

Picture Book

This has been floating around for a while now, it’s been playlisted here a lot so I have no excuse as to why we haven’t posted it before. We featured the original of Picture Book and Greta Svabo Bech’s ‘Sunshine’ a while back but just never got round to pimping the awesome Justin Faust reMix.

Well, the man has just posted it to his SoundCloud account, so what better time to rectify our oversight. We thought the original was a really catchy track, but a little to Euphoric fluff for our tastes, but Mr. Faust rectifies that perfectly. It’s the same catchy, infectious tune, but with a backing of that wonderful Justin Faust synth Disco goodness. Everything about this track from the bouncy Disco bass to the smooth solo make you smile. It’s a really good vocal, Greta has an interesting inflection to her voice that’s pretty involving, in our opinion Faust has done the vocal more justice than the original.

Marina’s ‘Homewrecker’

Marina And The Diamonds

We don’t mind saying that Marina And The Diamonds has been, and is, one of our favourite singer/songwriters of the past few years, we also don’t mind saying that her last single, ‘Radioactive’, was a big let-down. ‘Radioactive’ was a pretty awesome song that suffered from some atrocious, and really dated, ‘90’s hands-in-the-air Trance production from Stargate. Marina’s new track, ‘Homewrecker’, thankfully restores our faith in her.

Marinas uniqueness in her personality, approach to creativity and especially her voice, is her biggest asset, ‘Radioactive’ tried to hide that and homogenize her, ‘Homewrecker’ shines a spotlight back on it. It;s big ol’ stumpy ElectroPop tune taken from her forthcoming ‘Electra Heart’ album. We’re not sure whether this is Marina or Electra talking though, probably Electra.
