Alex Metric’s ‘Ammunition’ EP

Alex Metric

We’ve kinda’ not been paying too much attention to Alex Metric’s forthcoming new EP, mainly because we weren’t that impressed with the EP’s lead track ‘Rave Weapon’, which isn’t really bad, just a bit predictable and disappointing.

Thankfully the other two tracks on the EP more than make up for that, in a seriously awesome kinda’ way. ‘Anybody Else’ is the standout, a huge robotic Disco track with a positively stratospheric lead line and a couple of piercing synth solos that are heavy both the mod wheel and the euphoria. A fat funky bass and some synthesizer shredding, what more can you ask for? ‘Epichords’ is a full on peak-time builder, this one;s going to be rockin’ festival season this year, you can tell, it’s a track to get lost in. ‘Rave Weapon’ aside Mr. Metric has is about it drop a bomb of an EP.

Quixotic

Quixotic

Quixotic is a Hungarian producer who’s been kicking around various music scenes for a few years now but has recently turned his hand towards the worlds of Nu-Disco, SynthWave and Italo. And we’re glad he did.

There’s a few tracks over on his SoundCloud page worth your attention, but here are a few that capture his style. That style being big, thick, retro Italo basslines awash with rich Nu-Disco grooves. ‘Étoiles’ is the big stand out for me, it’s a massive slice of Italo flavoured Cosmic Disco which is driven by a pounding bassline and razor sharp keys and perfectly shows what Quixotic has to offer. Twisting arpeggios play of melodic leads to evolve into new line, giving the tack the feel of an epic journey. ‘Apology’ is his latest tune, a slow jam with a muted disco lick and heartfelt vocoded vocals. ‘Streetlife’ borrows heavily from The Crusaders’ track of the same name but injects it with even more Funk and a healthy dose of modern, deep synth bassed, Nu-Disco. This tune features one of the best lead solos I have heard this year, Herbie Hancock style.

Sébastien Tellier ‘Cochon Ville’

Sébastien Tellier

Next month sees French ElectroPop genius Sébastien Tellier finally release his long awaited (well, around here definitely) new single ‘Cochon Ville’, after the brief welcome back of ‘Pépito Bleu’ it’s a funk return to form that leaves us excited for his forthcoming album, ‘My God Is Blue’.

Produced by Ed Banger’s Mr. Flash, the track is smooth slice of French DiscoPop that’s backed by some awesome reMixes. The Magician us front and centre with a track that harkens back to the days of Pet Shop Boys at the Disco. Shifting the mood of the tune into one of  late night ‘80’s dancefloors The Magician takes you on a synthesized journey through rain soaked back alleys and seedy bars. Hey Champ! take on the track is pure ‘80’s ElectroPop Funk with hints of Axel F while Dimitri From Paris’ Acid soaked Disco is a strange, but pleasing collision between burbling 303’s and ‘70’s Moroder.

Tommy’s new tune

tommy

Here’s something new from French SynthWave producer Tommy, and if you like your electronic music Outrun flavoured you’re in for a treat.

After a screeching , engine revving intro ‘Overdrive’ throttles ahead with some of the most uplifting solo work I have heard in a while. Tommy really works the keyboard to ring every last drop of emotional, inspiring energy out of it.  Leads soar, drums rock, pads rise and fall as ‘Overdrive’ takes you along on it’s high speed synthesizer journey. Just sit back and relax.

Marsheaux’s ‘Do You Feel?’

Marsheaux

The second of the not-quite-made-the-album Marsheaux tracks to grace SoundCloud brings two words to mind. Moroder & Curve.

One the one hand I can kinda’ understand why this track wasn’t picked for the Greek duo’s forthcoming new album, it’s a bit of a departure for them in it’s raw, almost Electro-Rockiness. However, on the other hand it’s a big shame ‘cos the track’s awesome. As I said, Moroder & Curve, it’s like Giorgio reMixes something from Curve’s classic album Doppelganger, which makes for a superb meeting of synthesizer Disco and Shoegaze. The track is really early ’90’s Indie in it’s arrangement and that really endears it to us, whist wrapping that up in some kickin’ electronic dance.

M83 & Mylo

m83

In a couple of months time M83 will be dropping his new single, That single will be ‘Reunion’ from his acclaimed album ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’ and the package will feature reMixes from the likes of The Naked & Famous, Polly Scattergood, Sei A, We Have Band, White Sea and this absolutely storming version from the legend that is Mylo.

Premiered by our girl Annie Mac on her show this past Friday, Mylo’s mix is both smooth & soulful and energetic & exciting. In fact, Mylo’s done exactly what I’d want a reMixer to do with the track, keep the arrangement pretty much intact but swap out some of the rockier elements of the original and replace them with a solid dance groove. The result lift the song to new heights.

Props to HarderBloggerFaster for the heads up.

‘Reunion’ is released 7th May.

Goin’ Old School: Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Cabaret Voltaire & Heaven 17

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark kick us off today with 1980’s ‘Messages’, don’t they look young!

One of my favourite tracks from one of my favourite bands. ‘Crackdown ‘ from Cabaret Voltaire in 1983.

Not out favourite Heaven 17 song, but easily their best known is 1982’s ‘Temptation’,

…as Sampson’s ‘Human Love’

...as Sampson

Swiss producer …as Sampson has dropped a militaristic take on SynthWave in the form of ‘Human Love’.

‘Human Love’ appears to be written from the cyborg’s point of view as it is dominated by machine beats and repetitive synthetic sounds. Almost industrial in it’s approach to it’s hammering, relentless, drums the track takes on a regimented march out of which softer synths and the occasional glimpse of funk cry for attention. And it’s those snatches of soul amongst the factory floor onslaught that make the song what it is. Kinda’ sweet, in a noisy way.

Louis La Roché’s new single

louis_la_roche

Today one of the UK’s Nu-Disco champions Louis La Roché releases his new single, the Ad-Apt featuring ‘Untrue’.

Recently Louis has had no fear of playing fast and loose with styles and influences and ‘Untrue’ sees him playing about with his Disco sound, adding some rhymes and R&B vocals to create something new. The result is a track that is both incredibly funky, and incredibly commercial. With all the qualities to make a British summer hit, ‘Untrue ‘ could see La Roché gaining the mainstream recognition he definitely deserves. The B-side, ‘Touch Wood’ is a smooth as silk, straight-to-the-floor, Moog Funk/Nu-Disco collision which you’ll probably be hearing a lot from this year on late night dancefloors. Big piano and slick Disco licks see Louis keeping it tight, oh and it’s got a killer solo.

♫ Louis La Roché – Touch Wood

Louis La Roché  will be treating London to a headlining DJ set at this month’s Human Error at 93 Feet East. He’ll be spinning some tunes alongside the likes of Phonat, The Young Punx, Bobby Tank and Discosocks, all playing live as part of Human Error’s hook up with MofoHifi Records in a night that is not to be missed.
