Kido Yoji

Kido Yoji

Kido Yoji, 21 years old and probably the most impressive thing to come out of Japan in a while.

Having had a few tracks and reMixes knocking around for the last couple of years, Kido is in a place now to release a full EP on an unsuspecting world. Walking a line where Nu-Disco, Synth Funk and ElectroPop meet Kido masters all three styles and makes it look effortless. The EP’s lead track ‘Call A Romance’ is a smooth meeting of Funk and Disco with a Poppy vocal that on first listen you’d swear came out of LA. Heavy on the electro toms (and you know we love electro toms!) and ‘80’s style synthesizer stabs ‘Call A Romance’ has a groove that’ll see it getting a lot of play. One of our favourite double acts, Walter Sobcek, prove a reMix that takes the track to the next level, probably the stand-out reMix on the EP, the Sobceks rework the track into a reverby, majestic, ElectroPop epic. Blue Satellite also raise the bar with their reMix of ‘More than Real’, a rich Disco track with enough Funk and Talkbox to give Chromeo a run for their money!

Jordan F gets Sci-Fi

jordan f

Jordan F almost verging into EBM territory with his new track ‘Crime In The Forth Sector’.

The BladeRunner inspired, and heavily sampling, track is in stark contrast to Jordan’s usual ‘80’s aspirational party and nightdrive tunes, it’s a slice of Sci-Fi moodiness that could quite easily be the soundtrack to any number of ‘80’s post-BladeRunner straight-to-video flicks (I’m thinking Nemesis etc…) with it’s mid-paced industrial beats, EBM basslines and heavy retro chords. Imposing stuff!

Young Digerati cover The Cramps

young-digerati1

Young Digerati have dropped their second Halloween cover version in the lead up to the weekend.

Next up it’s The Cramps ‘Goo Goo Muck’ falls prey to Young Digerati’s synth workover. This time around things are a little more Dreamwave that their cover of ‘Monster Mash’, maybe the covers are designed to be played at different times throughout the night and this is defiantly a track for one your Halloween part’s in full swing. I’m sure YD are having fun with these!

G.L.O.V.E.S. reMixes Gold Fields

Gold Fields

G.L.O.V.E.S. is one of those producers we just never hear enough from, I swear every one of his productions has completely nailed it.

The same goes for his latest work, a reMix of, fellow Australian’s, the Indie band Gold Fields. Just check out that bassline, pure big Moog Disco Funk, laying down a solid backing for some really unique parts. G.L.O.V.E.S. stands out from the pack with a whole load of interesting riffs and sounds that play off each other in the mix, all of which perfects matches the tone of the song and the reMix effortlessly follows the vocals making them sound like the were always supposed to be together.

14. Yuksek – Always On The Run (Peter & The Magician reMix)
15. Mighty Mouse – Ice Beer
16. Digitalism – Circles (Moonlight Matters Re Dub)

Also today (busy day!) the MM has dropped a brand new track, ‘Ice Beer’, which is pretty epic at seven minutes but all of it is maxed out with Funk. Feeling like an instrumental spiritual successor to ‘Between The Pavement And The Stars’, ‘Ice Beer’ plays off the stabs of it’s predecessor but layers rich, emotive, piano and a driving groove. One of the first from MiGHty mOUse since the separation of band and production/DJ outfit, this bodes well for the future of MM.

Embryonik’s new EP

Embryonik

This Friday sees the release of Embryonik’s new EP ‘Skyscraper on binalog productions.

Containing three three original tracks and five choice reMixes the EP is an evocative, synthetic, audio journey through a dark metropolis. Kicking off with ‘Watergun’, a track that bleeds Italo into B-Boy Electro, the listener is already presented with the soundtrack to rain soaked, neon lit, future streets. Like the dark cousin of Italo, ‘Watergun’ presents Vangelis-esque atmospheres with EBM basslines. The mood continues into ‘Elevator’, a track with a soaring melody that seems to tell a story set against machine beats. This track in particular contains some really sweet synthesizer flourishes.  ‘Burning Bridges’ ends the original tracks in a reflective future Disco style. ‘80’s Italo forms the backbone for strings and racing leads to lift you out of the concrete oppression. Whether or not it was intended, there is a definite narrative feel to the EP, a trilogy of tracks that take you by the hand through a post BladeRunner cityscape. The reMix package is worth the price alone, our friend Jordan F provides the standout mix of ‘Elevator’, a laid back, uplifting antidote to the original’s doom and gloom, maybe injecting a little romance into Embryonik’s gritty Sci-Fi flick.

The Ice Choir

The Ice Choir

Some slick retro SynthPop now from the heart of Brooklyn in the form of The Ice Choir.

The outfit, founded by The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart’s Kurt Feldman and Raphael Randa from Depreciation Guild, release their début single next month. ‘Two Rings’ is a classic SynthPop tune that musically brings early New Order or Pet Shop Boys to mind, that reverby dance beat and sparkly synths,  whilst the vocals have a Marc Almond/Aidan Cassidy quality to them. Very reminiscant of early ‘80’s British Pop in it’s arrangement and vocal melody, ‘Two Rings’ doesn’t try to emulate the ‘80’s, it is the ‘80’s.
