[Audio] frYars’ ‘The Power’

fryars

The reappearance of London’s frYars with Cool Like Me earlier in the year resulted in our of our favourite tunes of 2013 so far. Now the man is following up on the runaway success of that single with his new, slightly more downtempo, release. The Power is the lead track on his forthcoming Radio PWR EP due out in October on 679.

It’s a sweeping, hand-in-the-air track, mixing up real instruments and layers of electronics to create and intimate, introspective sound. Lyrically the track is pretty genius, with some amazing lines in there I will leave you to discover. It’s pseudo-60s meets London ElectroPop groove is pretty enchanting and it’s raw production is just the right tack to take on a track like this.We expect to be hearing a lot more of The Power in coming months.

Best Be Believing is the next single to be taken from London Electro R&B superstars AlunaGeorge’s début album, Body Work. It;s a good choice for single treatment too, catchy and passionate with a complex groove.

The video goes all One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest as the duo take on the roles of doctor and patient on a hospital ward.

[Audio] Classixx reMixes Quadron’s ‘Hey Love’

Quadron

Not content with putting out one of the albums of the year, Hanging Gardens, Disco duo Classixx have been quietly delivering some of the years best reMixes too. Their latest masterpiece comes in the form of this mix of Danish ElectroPop outfit Quadron and their recent single, Hey Love.

Classixx’s version of the tune plays up the soulful vocals and laid back mood of the original whilst injecting it with a little of that poolside magic. Popping arpeggios ride over thick, thick, synth bass as the duo whip up an LA Funk vibe with a slight robotic quality that work well with the originals borderline diva styling.Even incorporating a hint of early 90s House in the mix, the Classixx guys have turned-in another winner here.

[Audio] Monsieur Adi reMixes Two Door Cinema Club’s ‘Changing Of The Seasons’

two-door-cinema-club

I’m really not sure if Monsieur Adi sleeps. The man had been busy as hell in the run up to the release of his soon-to-be massive hit What’s Going On? with A*M*E. Only this week the shiny new video for the single was released, but Adi still has time to knock out stunning reMix after stunning reMix. The latest being for the Madeon produced new single from Kitsuné IndiePoppers Two Door Cinema Club, Changing Of The Seasons.

Adi turns-in a spot-on version of the track, hitting the right point between laid back and dancefloor worthy, Adi, works a chilled Disco vibe, laden with thick synth bass and his wonderful strings, which is an step apart from the big room backing of the original, but somehow weaves it’s way into the song and makes it Adi’s own. The vocals seem to fit themselves around this new vibe, rising and falling with the mood of the track. It’s almost unbelievable that in his entire career Adi has never failed to impress, and he;s only just starting to blow up. We wish him the best of luck.

[MP3] Strangers’ ‘Fires’

strangers

OK, so, where are we now? It’s October already? How time flies. So that’s only three more months of free tracks from London SynthPop heroes Strangers before X-mas. We’d better crack on with October’s then. It’s called Fires, as usual you can download it from Strangers’ website, and it’s very autumnal.

How is it autumnal? Well, it’s hard to put your finger on what it is, but it’s kinda’ melancholy, and kinda’ crunchy too. That’s autumn, right? Easing you in with some brooding piano and shuffling purcussion, Strangers soon pull out all the stops to deliver a rousing SynthPop beast that seems to rise and rise in it’s dramatic structure. The now familiar elements of Strangers Industrial rhythms, cinematic instrumentation and unusually infectious groove are all present and correct, but seem to get slicker and slicker with each release. I’ve just realised there’s is easily an albums worth of Strangers material out there now, so I’m off to make a pretend Strangers album.

[MP3] Touch Tone reMixes Dive In’s ‘Let Go’

Dive In

Here’s the latest dollop of sunkissed synth Disco from our Robo-Boogie overlord Touch Tone. This time the funkster has turned his attention to quaint Glastonbury based rockers Dive In’s recent single Let Go, a gangly affair in the vein of major label summer IndiePop ‘hits’ that’s given a warm and pulsating treatment from Andrew that slowly build layers of toasty synths.

Stating off gently, with a moody kick and lush pads, every few bars Touch Tone introduces a new element to the mix until you head is nodding along to a Piano House tinged Dreamwave monster. Really, despite the bouncy piano line that admittedly does get stuck in your head, this one’s all about those sweeping pads and little arpeggiated melodies that make up the tunes ambient soundtrack, it’s a pure carefree sunshine concoction that lends it’s laid back vibe to the rest of the song, smoothing everything out.

Here’s the new video for Katy B’s infectious new single, 5am, which we’ve been playing quite a lot ‘round these parts.

The clip is a lavish affair, cinematic in both photograph and set design, like a Kubrick-esque version of her Broken Record video.

There’s a brand new Charli XCX song! This is something to rejoice. Coming so soon after her amazing début (proper) album True Romance, SuperLove gives us our first taste to Charli’s next phase. Surprisingly it’s got a bit of a New York Disco groove to it, it almost sounds like an XCX Pop version of the DFA sound. Totally addictive.

Directed by Ryan Andrews, the video is fun as hell. Well, it’s filmed in Tokyo, so you’d expect it would be.

[MP3] Chvrches’ ‘The Mother We Share’ reMixed by Moon Boots

CHVRCHEs

OK, we’ll be honest, we weren’t really feeling this reMix on first listen. Which was odd as we adore Chvrches, and The Mother We Share is our favourite Chvrches tune. We’re also huge fans of American Nu-Disco don Moon Boots, and are normally all over his reMixes. It kinda’ felt like Moon Boots didn’t really ‘get’ the song and just tried to shoehorn it into a standard Nu-Disco track, but on reflection we don’t think it’s his fault. The Mother We Share, lyrically and vocally, just isn’t a song that lends it’s self to laid-back poolside disco. Once we stopped worrying about the vocals fitting we we’re actually able to enjoy the track a lot more. So we decided to write about it after all.

Just taking the track on it’s own merits, it’s another excellent Moon Boots production. utterly infectious bass, sparse and mood building piano, little funky synth riffs, it’s got everything you;d ask for in a slick slice of synthetic Disco. We can’t really fault the actual track at all, it’s a really good tune. Chvrches’ The Mother We Share is an amazing song, and Moon Boots production on this track is superb, we just can’t help but feel the two shouldn’t have met. It’s an awesome five minutes of future funk, it would probably be better with less vocals though, and that’s something we never say!

[Audio] Queen Of Hearts’ ‘United’

queen-of-hearts_thumb

United is the B-side to the awesome Queen Of Hearts’ new single, Secret. Released at the weekend, the wonderful lead track is backed up by this slab of timeless SynthPop that was put together by our friend, and electronic music legend, Mark Reeder. With Reeder’s pedigree you know what you’re getting, the wealth of over three decades working with electronic music, which when added to Queen Of Hearts’ freshness always makes for something special.

Mark Reeder’s got a pretty good lock on classic SynthPop, and with United, we have a little Depeche Mode, a little Alphaville, all wrapped up with a little Berlin Techno. The perfect counterpoint to Queen Of Hearts melancholic, but intensely human vocals. It’s a track that sits very much on the German end of the SynthPop spectrum, even bordering on Modern SynthPop at times and kept elevated by both Mark’s waves of euphoric synths and the Queen’s passionate delivery. The single is out now. Get involved.
