[Audio] Banks’ ‘Brain’

Out this week is the new single from Blog Sound showstopper Banks who continues to tease us with hints of her forthcoming début album. The track, Brain, is produced by Shlohmo, who is apparently a person; but unlike previous collaborators such as SHON and TEED, not a person we’ve heard of. Whoever Shlohomo is, though, makes some sumptuous sounds for Banks to warble over.

Brain is an involving, deep, five minutes that’s just peppered with Bank’s greatness. Her vocals soar over the distorted backing, guiding the track through rises and falls and sweeping the listener along with her. Smooth R&B beats and a nod to LA Funk are all mixed up in this electronic melting pot. Epic stuff.

[Audio] A charity X-Mas EP from the Electronic Rumors gang!

Hey readers. A couple of weeks ago my father passed away, you may have seen a lull in posts. When all was done and dusted I felt the need to do something, both to commemorate my Dad and to give a little to an organization that helps both sufferers and carers, especially at a time like Christmas. So X-Mas Rumors was born. Four artists from the label kindly gave me their time and talent (and hopefully had a little fun) cover four beloved Christmas tunes.

Soundtrack your Christmas party, and do a little good in the process, with this new EP loaded with electronic cover versions of classic Christmas songs. Four of electronic rumors’ finest artists have generously devoted their time to covering their favourite Christmas songs for X-Mas Rumors, and EP whose entire earnings with be going to the Alzheimer’s Society.

electronic rumors newcomer (and Vulture Music veteran) Kids At Midnight work some kind of silky magic on Wham!’s Last Christmas, while the 60’s classic Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by Darlene Love gets an energetic retro ElectroPop re-envisioning by SynthWaver Let Em Riot. New York ElectroPoppers She’s The Queen deliver their upbeat take on Stevie Wonder’s classic What Christmas Means To Me and the EP plays out with electronic experimentalist beaumont intricate take on Little Drummer Boy.

The EP is being released with a ‘pay what you want’ price mark, with 100% of the revenue going to the Alzheimer’s Society we’re hoping people are full of Christmas cheer and give generously.

[Download] Computer Magic’s ‘Extra Stuff’ EP

Extra Stuff. That’s what you want. Who doesn’t want extra stuff? And That’s just what Brooklyn’s finest synthstronaut, Danielle ‘Danz’ Johnson, better know as Computer Magic, is giving us. Including her recently released tune, All I Ever Wanted, and six other amazing tracks, Dani is giving away the whole Extra Stuff EP away for free right up until it goes on sale officially this week. But go and buy it anyway, it very much deserves some of your hard earned. The EP is made up of Computer Magic tunes that have found themselves online, some tracks released only in Japan and three brand new songs, that’s the kind of Extra Stuff we’re into.

The EPs opener, Time And Reason, is short but worth the admission price alone. A soaring introduction to the EP which sees Dani’s vocals sounding larger than ever set amongst rolling arpeggios. It Makes No Difference is a bong fuelled Cosmic jam, wailing vocals and buzzing synths trying to contain the chaos of the song. There’s a slight Post-Punk vibe to I’m The Pro, a strong New York feel too, all pulsating vintage synths and hollered voice giving off an intense DIY energy. Returning to the retro SynthPop arena for Time To Decide, showing off her 80s British Pop influences and Summer Vacation’s Parisian ElectroPop vibe Computer Magic settles into a sweet alt Pop groove for the EP’s middle section. Dani’s curiously heartfelt vocals are quite inviting, bobbing along with the warm classic electronic sounds. The EP closes on the stripped back and cute Living For A Second Day and the Synth ‘N’ Roll of the previously featured All I Ever Wanted. If you’re into the DIY synth thing, or New York SynthPop, or just some really enjoyable ElectroPop tunes, then check out this EP.

[Audio] Mild Peril’s ‘Wizards’ Pupil’/’Arp Of Pan’

What better day than Halloween to continue your journey down the rabbit hole that is the world of Mild Peril. The latest release from London’s Italo Experimentalist comes in the form of a brand new four track EP. It’s a double A-side affair, first up is two versions of Wizard’s Pupil, followed by two versions of Arp Of Pan on the flip. Pretty Proggy titles, huh? Well, it is Halloween. And don’t worry about the names, hit play any you’ll be treated to some serious cosmic synth narrative. You won’t regret it.

Both track come in two flavours, First Sequence and Second Sequence. Wizard’s Pupil stars life as a burbling slice of moody Italo, the creeping dread of mid 80s Horror movie soundtracks evident as Mild Peril’s musical story starts to unfold. Clocking in at 8 minutes Wizard’s Pupil (First Sequence) has plenty of time to evolve, morphing from the melancholy synth of it’s beginnings into an optimistic, even uplifting, slice of electronic wonder, which is carried into it’s Second Sequence where the shiny, hopeful, synths are complimented with a retro dancefloor beat. Arp Of Pan continues to play both the atmospheric Italo and cinematic SynthWave cards, undulating waves of arpeggios crashing against a steady groove to create something quite hypnotic broken by twisting and rousing solos. The Arps’ Second Sequence bring takes the mood to a more pensive place for the EP’s closer, with a deep and mysterious fifteen minutes of synthetic bliss. Another storming release from Mild Peril and a must for synthesizer fans.

[Download] Earl Grey reMixes Iñigo & Kamizi’s ‘Foreplay’

You know when Earl Grey drops a new tune that you have to prepare your ears for something a little different, a little interesting, and it’s no different with his latest tune. It’s a reMix of Mexicans Iñigo & Kamizi’s forthoming single Foreplay, and it mines the depth of early Futurist SynthPop and 80s space-age Italo to deliver an enigmatic synthetic groove with nods to B-boy Electro.

Through the tune there’s a strain of distorted vocals that would have sat quite nicely on some mid-80s EBM, but the rest of the tune delivers an amalgamation of post-Kraftwerkian dance music. Taking in everything from a early Bronx beat to an epic Italo arpeggio line, this truly is a tune for connoisseurs of electronic music and one that highlights Earl Grey as a standout producer amongst his peers. Oh, did we mention it’s damn funky too, in a lonely broken robot kinda’ way.

[Video] Suns’ ‘Bells’

London based avant-garde ElectroPoppers Suns consist of Andy McDonnell and Michael Tyrrell. Despite forming two years ago the due are only just about to release their début EP, WeAreSuns. The Synth haze of Bells is the first track to break ground from the EP.

[Audio] CJ Mirra’s ‘RGB Flowers’

CJ Mirra is the synthetic alter-ego if John Sampson, after earning critical acclaim in the Indie world, he’s now flexing his creative muscles with an array of electronic gadgetry. CJ Mirra creates eerie soundscapes, Sci-Fi soundtracks and emotionally resonant moods, all set to undulating and intricate rhythms. His début EP was released next month on Colour8 Records with RGB Flowers, it’s lead track, featuring partner-in-crime Ronika.

RBG Flowers is a pulsating opus that walks the line between futuristic, dystopian, soundtrack and deeply human lament. With rhythms built upon a combination of grinding machine beats and Tabla-esque purcussion, RGB Flowers lays down the juxtaposition of brutal, chainsaw bass and beautiful, Vangelis style synths to create a slightly edgy, slightly unsettling, but always intoxicating piece to take with you into the night. A vaguely recognisable Ronika delivers a performance that adds an extra personal quality to the track, but works more as an additional instrument on CJ Mirra’s sonic canvas than as the tunes focal point. Oh, and there’s a hazy sax solo, and sax makes everything better. The EP comes equipped with and instrumental version of RGB Flowers and the enigmatic and eerie dance beats of Soft Candles and is definitely one you should check out if you fancy a slice of intelligent and meticulously crafted electronica.

[Download] Computer Magic’s ‘All I Ever Wanted’

All I Ever Wanted is the new tune from the amazing Computer Magic. It may only be a demo, but quite frankly we eagerly lap up anything Brooklyn based synth wizard Danielle Johnson releases. Her last proper release was A Million Years, from earlier this year which still stands out as one of the year’s highlights. Hopefully this new tune is an indication that Danz is back in the studio working on a new album maybe?

Musically, All I Ever Wanted is the epitome of Computer Magic. Raw drum machine beats and vintage synths, complex arrangements sounding deceptively simple. A robotic onslaught made to conform to human beauty, constructed of 80s flavours in a contemporary Indie-Electro mixture. Danz give this latest tune a bit of a Rock ‘N’ Roll edge with an almost early 80s post-punk slant to the vocals, setting it apart from other Computer Magic tunes, but making it infectious listening.

[Video] Planningtorock’s reworks The Knife’s ‘Let’s Talk About Gender Baby, Let’s Talk About You And Me’

Sometime The Knife collaborator Planningtorock was invited to rework the duo’s track Full Of Fire, taken from their Shaking The Habitual album. Making the track truly her own, Planningtorock delivered Let’s Talk About Gender Baby, Let’s Talk About You And Me, complete with funky as anything bassline.
