La Roux guests for Skream

Dubstep innovator Skream will be releasing his second album, ‘Outside the Box’ on Tempa later in August and after he helped propel La Roux into dancefloor superstardom it seems only fair that they return the favour by appearing on one of his tracks.

‘Finally’ is a deep string led moody track with a vaguely eastern feel to it. I gotta’ say, heavy sub works really well with Elly Jackson’s voice, the highs and lows really complimenting each other.

modual

modual are a Swedish duo who describe their music as ‘Popstep’, which is a pretty apt description.

Mixing elements of Dubstep, Drum & Bass and Garage with Pop songwriting and chord structures they create a sound which is both Dubby, danceable and poppy. It makes for some smooth listening, the music combines bits of deep, dark, Dubstep and more Jazzy D&B (a la Roni Size) which make a refreshing backing for proper Pop songs.

This is going straight on my mp3 player!

I.D.

Dubstep man of the moment I.D. released his new EP, ‘Mustang’ this month on SubSlayers.

His first solo effort outside of his partnership with Baobinga, the title track rides a deep Dubstep bassline over intricate breaks. The warping bass creating a musical tension skilfully broken buy strings and effects. Defiantly one for a dimly lit club at 3am

Major Lazer & La Roux partner up to release mixtape

MajorLazer&LaRoux

While in the studio in Jamaica, Electro-Dancehall masters Diplo & Switch A.K.A. Major Lazer put together a mixtape for La Roux, dubbing it ‘Lazerproof’.

Consisting of 14 mash-ups of La Roux’s SynthPop gold with various Dubplates, Blends and Diplo & Switch’s beats featuring the likes of Amanda Blank, Candi Redd and Matthew Hemerlein. If you’ve ever wanted to hear a Dancehall/Electro/Dub/ElectroPop/Hip Hop/SynthPop/Dubstep/Ska collision album then this is the one for you. The whole album works amazingly well and handled masterfully by Major Lazer and all given to you for free via ‘Lazerproof’s mini-site. It’s defiantly different and a perfect way to kick off the summer, in fact in the first 24 hours of release 200,000 seemed to agree and crashed Diplo’s label, Mad Descent’s servers forcing the label to backup the album download at this zShare link!

Here’s some of our favourites from the mixtape:

Major Lazer & La Roux (Feat. Matt Hemerlein) – Bulletproof (Nacey reMix)

Major Lazer & La Roux – Colourless Artibella

Major Lazer & La Roux (Feat. Amanda Blank) – Quicksand (Mad Decent 2010 Rerub)

Major Lazer & La Roux (Feat. Candi Redd) – Independent Kill

Oh, and the mix has an awesome cover featuring an Iron Man armour clad Elly!

Head on over to the Lazerproof mini-site to pick up the mixtape.

Massive Attack & Martina Topley-Bird’s ‘Psyche’ reMixed

It looks like ‘Psyche’ might have been chosen as the next single from Massive Attack’s ‘Heligoland’ album.

Good choice too, Martina Topley-Bird is one of my favourite vocalists. Here she is stepping in on vocal duties on ‘Teardrop’ during Massive Attack’s US TV début on Jimmy Kimmel Live:

And here’s the video for ‘Psyche’.

La Roux reMixes

LaRoux06

Is it time for a new La Roux album yet? Or are Elly and Ben still gallivanting ‘round the world promoting the last one?

Oh well, it’s gonna’ be while before they’re back in the studio I expect so the occasional trawl of the internet for unheard reMixes may sometimes be in order, sometimes you can find some real gems like these two!

No Roux No, out of nowhere, has dropped what may be one of my favourite reMixes of ‘Bulletproof’, like a stripped down Nu-Disco track the whole song revolves around the ever evolving lead line, it’s well worth a listen. Mr. TinoForever, however, drops a dubstep reMix of ‘In For The Kill’ to rival Skream’s, with some heavy, heavy synths.

Interestingly, La Roux were on BB2’s documentary about Heaven 17 last night and Elly was joined by Ben for the interview, does this mean he’s stepping out of the shadows? (he probably just has a lot to say about Heaven 17, but who wouldn’t?).

Radiant Dragon

RadiantDragon

We were recently digging Radiant Dragon’s reMix of Egyptian Hip-Hop’s ‘Wild Human Child’ but we hadn’t heard and of his original material so when the German Londoner email us we sat up and paid attention.

Radiant Dragon’s music is hard to describe, there’s a touch of old 4AD darkness about it and it’s experimental but musical. Rather than, as experimental music tends to do, create soundscapes RD takes an experimental approach and writes an actual song with it. With some surprising instrumentation and and almost magical mix a spacey, atmospheric piece of ordered chaos is produced. Entrepreneurs take an equally experimental approach with their reMix, only they graft it onto some bass shaking Dubstep.

‘Preseli’ is released in October on Cloud Factory, until then check the man’s MySpace.

Rox

Rox

Rox is a 22 year old half Jamaican, half Iranian singer/songwriter currently signed to Rough Trade and making waves on the live music scene.

Her forthcoming single ‘I Don’t Believe’ has had reMix treatments from the Electro-House and Dubstep ends of the electronic music spectrum by Don Diablo and Landlord respectively. Diablo’s take on the track builds, on top of the Roots elements, a 2-step Electro track that will have you groovin’ wherever you hear it while Landlord expertly crafts a deep, dark bass monster.

I gotta’ say, the Don Diablo mix is one of my favourite tracks of the week!

Don’t Wait Animate reMixes

DontWaitAnimate

We posted about Don’t Wait Animate a while back, their post-Nu-Rave Indie-Dub-Electro thing is pretty unique. A jagged inner city mash-up of styles and influences.

The London 5 piece have dropped by the electronic rumors Inbox to big up a couple of reMixes of their début single, ‘6174’. The Dirty Disco deliver something special, completely deconstructing the track and building it back up into a dancefloor ElectroPop smash with some heavy heavy beats and more than a couple of nods to Dubstep as does Coin Operated Boy’s 8-bit noise rave.

New Pony Pony Run Run single!

PonyPonyRunRun02

Amazing French Indie-ElectroPopsters Pony Pony Run Run return next month with a long awaited new single ‘Waling On A Line’. It’s a, frankly, brilliant slice of Indie-Electro that deserves all kinds of attention this summer.

There are loads of reMixes lined up for the reMix package, the stand out really has to be Lifelike’s stellar return to form with his summertime part reMix, so smooth the synths seem to melt together, all 7m50s of it is brilliant. For darker take on the tune check out French Fries’ Dubstep workout with downpitched vocals while Blatta & Inesha deliver a straight up wonky banger.
