Ronika

It’s not the weekend just yet, but here’s a little tune that’s sure to get you in the partying mood.

Hailing from Nottingham, Ronika is a retro DiscoPop whirlwind here to blow the cobweb out of your 21st century brain. Musically this is real authentic sounding early 80’s Pop, particularly reminiscant of that period of American Pop that was on the tail end of Disco and the emergance of SynthPop. Think early Madonna or Blondie’s flirtation with Disco (and Hip Hop), the lead line on ‘Forget Yourself’ is pure B-Boy Electro while the squelchy synth bass is loaded with funk. Yet amongst all the nostalgic American musical awesomeness is a Modern British singer with tongue-firmly-in-cheek and an English sense of irony that would make Pet Shop Boys proud.

A one hundred percent DIY operation, Ronika releases her second EP ‘Forget Yourself’/’Wiyoo’ next month backed with reMixes from Mirrorzisland and herself. I can’t help but feel that this is how Pop sounds if people who love Pop are left to make it unsupervised (by people who want to make money). Or, at least, this is how it should sound!

Frankmusik’s ‘Do It In The AM’ video

Here is the long-teased video for Frankmusik’s forthcoming single featuring Far East Movement.

‘Do It In The AM’ isn’t Frankmusik’s best song ever, but it is a cool summery Pop tune that could be his real breakthrough track, and the video show how Vince is living it up LA style these days.

More from Flashlights’ forthcoming EP

Binary Entertainment have dropped another hint of what to expect from the forthcoming new EP by Flashlights.

‘Holidays’ is just one of the tracks on the ‘Hidden Behind Trees’ EP, due out in June. More of a traditional song than the previously heard ‘Glowing Eyes’ which displays Flashlights talents lie in catchy songwriting as well as soundcraft. Still loaded with their (fast becoming trademark) reverb, with this track Flashlights are still walking the line between Dreamwave and Chillwave. Which is actually a really interesting place to be, lacing the cosmic dreaminess of Chillwave with the retro synths and hooks of Dreamwave. I’m surprised no-one has done it before but when the EP comes out I get the feeling I’m going to be glad Flashlights found that niche for themselves.

Dimitri From Paris & DJ Rocca Present Erodiscotique

Clive ‘Crash’ Lewis from electronic rumors presents a look at Dimitri From Paris & DJ Rocca Present Erodiscotique’s new single. I hate long winded artist names, is there any particular reason they couldn’t just call this project ‘Erodiscotique’ other than peeps ego’s needed stroking? Although Dimitri’s a cool guy and I love Rocca’s work in Chrimea X did they really need to have their names and a project name?

The irritating name aside, ‘I Need A Reason For Living’ is actually an awesome track, it’s got a real solid late 80’s dance sounds. I make no pretence that I don’t adore orchestral hits, ‘cos I do, they’re so rad and this track is full of them in a Bomb The Bass’ ‘Don’t Make Me Wait’ style but with male vocals supplied by Fred Ventura (which I suppose makes it ‘Dimitri From Paris & DJ Rocca Present Erodiscotique (Feat. Fred Ventura)’ which is just ridiculous). The old school use of sampling and the bouncy FM bassline make me so nostalgic for the late 80’s. Really dig the sound these guys are cooking up on their new EP ‘I Love New York’ from which ‘I Need A Reason For Living’ comes. It’s a but Italo, a bit Hip-House, a bit DancePop, totally cool.

Risk Risk

Risk Risk is a mysterious German producer who wants to let his music “speak for itself”, he shuns the internet in favour of being known only by his analog SynthPop sounds. I don’t know about you, but mystery artists who “let the music speak for itself” are getting pretty tired now, it’s not interesting, it’s been done, what’s the matter with you? It’s irritating for the press and it’s irritating for the fans.

Risk Risk’s music, however, is very cool. Stripped down SynthPop with a cold early 80’s feel without going down Minimal Synth territory. Musically quite early Ultravox or Gary Numan but with harsher Germanic tone to the vocals and just a hint of a modern dance music groove. This is neon drenched Sci-Fi stuff that the early Futurists would be proud of. We all miss the early 80’s at some point (I’m assuming if you’re reading this) and Risk Risk can fill that little hole in your life.

Monsieur Adi’s ‘Last Stand’

‘Last Stand’ is the lead track from the forthcoming ‘Fire Fire Fire’ EP from Monsieur Adi.

Featuring Gary Go on vocals, ‘Last Stand’ is an epic slice of ElectroPop with heaps of Monsieur Adi’s trademark orchestration thrown into the mix to give it that majestic feel. The sweeping powerful orchestral elements combine with the inspirational, uplifting subject matter to create quite an emotional experience. All with a solid Disco beat. What more can you ask for?

Washed Out album news

Washed Out’s mix of Chillwave, ElectroPop and Shoegaze has made it’s was to the Sub Pop label for his forthcoming album.

The album will be titled ‘Within And Without’ and if ‘Eyes Be Closed’ it will be a dreamlike, reverb fuelled, soundscape. Like the wall-of-sound British Indie bands of the late 80’s/early 90’s (especially with the rhythm section) but with more synths, Washed Out Shoegazes his was through the Chillwave landscape to provide us with cosmic jams like ‘Eyes Be Closed’. You gotta’ be in the mood for it, but if you are it’s almost perfect.

Ride The Universe’s reMix of Chromeo’s ‘Hot Mess’

Y’all can stop making reMixes of Chromeo’s ‘Hot Mess’ now! Ride The Universe are in the house!

This is what Chromeo mixes should sound like. Like someone drove a dump truck full of synth Funk up to your house and deposited it’s cargo on your doorstep. Just listen to that talkbox riff, pure, addictive, genius! This track’s got everything you want to get the party started. Driving arpeggios to keep the energy up, the aforementioned talkbox riff, sweet 80’s chords and a wailing guitar to keep you inspired (take the Chromeo vocal track off the mix and it would make a very cool training montage track!). It feels like digitalfoxglove and the Fiero boys have really found their sound now and are really to step up to the plate and pate their place amongst the big hitters of Disco (was that two Baseball metaphors in one sentence? I’m English, I don’t even know what Baseball is!), melding 80’s soundtrack epicness with solid Disco grooves RTU are gonna’ be a force to be reckoned with. Like a sexy 80’s cop show theme with aspirations of tearing up the dancefloor this track this tune has something for everyone.

We’ve become keen followers of AlunaGeorge’s career here at electronic rumors, we’re pretty sure they are going places with their perfect mix of Dubby sounds and introspective ElectroPop.

Futurecop!’s ‘Starworshipper’ reMix winner!

Futurecop! have announced the winner of their ‘Starworshipper’ reMix contest. The reMix, picked personally be Futurecop! to appear on their forthcoming EP is by MPM.

MPM’s mix was one of our favourites too. MPM runs a blog dedicated to old 80’s electronic soundtracks and the music it influenced at MPM Soundtracks which is one of our regular reads, it’s always entertaining and MPM digs up the best nostalgic videos. His reMix of ‘Starworshiper’ follows on in the blogs tradition with a slick 80’s/Dreamwave feel that puts the original song into cruise control.
