[Audio] Grum and Small Pyramids headline Glasgow Underground’s ‘Summer Of Love ’13’

Summer Of Love '13

One of the UK most dedicated, and forward thinking, House stables, Glasgow Underground (out of somewhere or other up north) are following on from their huge The Underground Sound Of Glasgow compilation from Optimo (which, bizarrely, kept me occupied recently for much of a massive coach trip to, coincidentally, Glasgow) with a new EP collecting some of their hot tips for the summer. This release goes big and deep with names like Ovr Kill and Mastercris alongside these two gems.

Grum jumps back onto our radar with this reMix of Kevin McKay’s 2011 club hit Body Talk. With this tune we’re treated to the next step in the evolution of Grum. From Dreamwave to Nu-Disco to Trance and now another step along his inevitable House path. Grum effortlessly weaves all the tricks he’s learnt along his music journey into a pretty unique sound that has it’s roots, and feet, in packed warehouses but it’s mind is at the beach. Here he whips McKay’s Olivia Newton John sampling bouncy House tune into a moody and futuristic electronic epic with an infectious mixture of bleepy House and Dubby effects. Another post-Dreamwaver experimenting with a little Dub in their House is Small Pyramids, who’s Don’t Do It To Me is a hypnotic Chicago track that creates a nice spacious sound, spreading out the sound a creating a groove for a soulful vocal. There six track on the whole release, and it;s definitely well worth checking out.

[Audio] alloapm’s ‘Wavepop’ EP

alloapm

Tokyo DreamPop outfit alloapm are no strangers to these pages, always delivering something a little left-field and a little funky. The duo have just got on-board with London’s Heavy Disco label and this week release their new EP, Wavepop. It’s four tracks worth of psychedelic, freeform and surprisingly emotive, synthetic DiscoPop.

The EP’s tracks have all been kicking around in one form or another for a while this year, but collected and mastered here give a nice immersive alloapam experience. Kicking off with Talking To My Radio, a synth buzzing, vocal warbling, retro grooving slice of musical sunshine. Weaving some experimental arrangements, alloapm layer a variety of robotic sounds and stripped back synth melodies with heavily modulated vocals but keep everything tight and upbeat with a number of summery lead lines. Midnight Cake takes on more of a laid back vibe, complimenting alloapm’s electronics with a wicked muted Disco lick and some hazy, almost Chillwavey vocals and probably comes the closes to contemporary Disco on the EP. The EP’s closing track, Malibu Club, gets it’s 80s groove on from the opening bar. This is a proper retro Pop song, aspirational and infectiously danceable, it;s thick vintage digital synth sounds pulsate away providing the perfect backing for some vintage Electronic Soul vocals and (what is essentially) the spiritual successor to Madonna’s Holiday, or maybe Wham!’s Club Tropicana, only weirder. Lush 80s Pop. the EP also comes equipped with a reMix of Talking To My Radio from Abelard and is definitely worth picking up.

[MP3] Ronika’s ‘Search Siren’

Ronika

Just in time for your weekend, here’s the new tune from the UK’s reigning DiscoPop queen Ronika. While we’re all still eagerly awaiting her début album, there release of which is drawing ever closer, she’s turned in a new slab of soulful electronic Pop to tide us over.

Taking things a little deeper than her previous bouncy offerings, Search Siren is an epic, cinematic, affair. The song sees Ron is full-on diva mode as she delivers an huge emotive performance over a cavalcade of vintage synth sounds. Buzzing synths and a haunting piano line intertwine over a relentlessly funk beat while Ronika’s multi layered vocals, tinged with a hint of melancholy, whip the track into a rousing lament that would work equally well on the dancefloor or in the headphones. Showing ever more versatility in her music, Ronika continues to cement her place as one of the UK’s rising stars, we can’t wait for the album.

[MP3] Rich Taste’s ‘Faint In Love’

Rich Taste

Rich Taste are a new duo hailing from the Brooklyn who appear to have formed, recorded a song in a few hours, stuck it on SoundCloud and generally taken some artists who have been doing this for years to school. James and Eva produced their début tune, Faint In Love, in one night, assisted only by a bottle of Scotch. Now that’s how you make music!

Faint In Love is am analog synth heavy Pop tune. utilising much of the same icy sound pallet as Minimal Synth but injecting it with an Italo Disco warmth and an emotional core. Faint In Love reminds us a little of the early material from fellow NYC residents The Golden Filter with a slight Scandinavian twist with it’s spikey, but funky, synth work and swirling beautiful vocals that slip from ethereal to pin sharp effortlessly. Also, the track has a chorus that’ll be stuck in your head all day, which is always a plus.

[MP3] Wolf Saga’s ‘Always With Me’

Wolf Saga

Here’s the latest blissed out slice of hazy synth gold from Canada’s Wolf Saga. Increasingly featuring his vocals in his tunes seems to have allowed Mr. Saga to express himself in a much fuller way. This particular tune, Always With Me, sees the Wolfman working though some issues of peeps growing apart. and getting Chillwavey with it too.

And while he’s working otu some issues, Wolf Saga is going to deliver a big, bombastic, Indie-Electro tune that full of swirling synths and heart. It’s a sweet introspective song, with a sound that’s largest that it would at first suggest. From the growling synth bass to the sparking chimes, the track fills the speakers in a way you don’t often expect from quaint Indie-Electro. Wolf Saga is going from strength to strength, we can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.

[MP3] Panama reMixes Clubfeet

Clubfeet

South African/Australian Indie-Electro outfit Clubfeet have not only just embarked on an Australian tour but are also gearing up for the release of their new double A-side single ‘Everything You Wanted/Heartbreak’, due for release later this month. Ahead of the new single dropping, tour support, Future Classic artist Panama has reMixes the guys previous offering Cape Town to Tropical effect.

Panama’s take on Cape Town is like a laid back Island embrace.  A rolling Disco effort who’s stomping basslines, beach purcussion and twisting Moog Funk leads all combine with a raw piano hook to create a chilled but pumping poolside groove. Add a splash of hazy and fitting vocals that are actually darker than first listen might suggest, and you’ve got an interesting, summery track right here.

Clubfeet – Cape Town (Panama reMix)

Clubfeet’s new double A-side is out 15th July.
