[Audio] Tear Council’s ‘My Car’

Tear Council

The shaping-up-to-be-utterly-amazing new project from ex-Van She man Matt Van Schie and ex-Van She man Touch Sensitive; Tear Council have offered up another new tune for us. My Car follows on from the duo’s début single Anywhere, and continues in a similar vein. While we were writing this post we wondered what happened to Tomek, Matt, Michael and Nicky have done loads of post-Van She stuff but Tomek is barely heard from. Well, Tomek is now a furniture designer. So that happened.

Anyway…My Car glides out of the speakers in that breezy Van She manner we’re all used to. Low key and subtly smooth, My Car blends easy going basslines and relaxed Disco beats with a cheeky vocal that doesn’t take itself to seriously. The waves of summer evening synths that roll over the track capture a carefree mood and are the icing on the nostalgic cake. Pure sunshine bliss.

The gloriously retro début single from ex-Van She man Matt Van Schie and ex-Van She man Touch Sensitive, Tear Council’s Anywhere, has not as a spanking new music video to go with it’s lavish, emotional SynthPop.

Miška Mandić directs the clip, a suitably vintage affair that pains the duo with a sixties spy thriller performance vibe featuring a guest appearance from backing vocalist Holiday Sidewinder.

Tear Council

Matt Van Schie sure does know how to pick his musical partners. The Van She mastermind has most recently been kicking around with MiGHty mOUse as the wonderful Du Tonc. While the mOUse is busying himself with some mOUsey stuff (more on that in the near future!) the other Matt isn’t sitting on his laurels. He’s teamed up with one of Australia’s hottest Disco producers, the Pizza Guy himself, Touch Sensitive (which isn’t that surprising, as Touch Sensitive is actually Van She guitarist Michael Di Francesco, formerly Arithmatix!. Are you keeping up?). The new project is called Tear Council, here is their first record, Anywhere.

Unsurprisingly, Anywhere is a strong Van She vibe. Think Van She’s more chilled, introspective moments with a Tropical Disco groove. It feels like these guys are staying true to themselves and their writing style, but incorporating all the influences and musical lessons they’ve learnt from he past few years in various dance music outfits. The song itself is a lush and emotional antipodean croon, a mature evolution of Van She’s carefree Indie that drapes itself over an inviting blend of laid back Disco and infectiously catchy Tropical leads. The ultimate city nights jam?

[MP3] Du Tonc’s ‘Rise’

du-tonc_thumb_thumb

And the unstoppable MiGHty mOUse and Matt Van Schie’s Du Tonc juggernaut keeps on going. This is the third track in as many months from the newly formed duo. With this new track, Rise, these guys appear to have just invented Goth-Italo-Disco. Check it out, you’ll see what we mean.

So, instantly, we can’t help but feel that Rise is channelling Bauhaus’ Bela Lugosi’s Dead, especially with the bass pattern, sped up a few revs and run through a Robo-Disco machine. On top the eerily familiar bassline a swathes of plucked Dubby guitar licks, shuffling purcussion and haunting wolf howls swirl about the track alongside arpeggios and a solid dancefloor kick making for a weird combination of the haunting and the Cosmic. Matt’s moody croon on this track just adds to the atmosphere. Prepare yourself for the spooktastic Hammer Horror chorus. It;s been a long time since anyone made Goth this funky.

[Audio] Du Tonc’s ‘Surging Memories’

du-tonc_thumb

Surging Memories is the second single from the frankly awesome superhero team-up of MiGHty mOUse and Van She bassist and ElectroPopper Matt Van Schie, Du Tonc. The duo are gearing up for their immanent tour of Europe and the US, and have dropped their new tune in preparation.

Following on from their previous single, Darkness, Surging Memories feels even more like MiGHty mOUse meets Matt Van Schie that that did. Which I guess is kinda;’ obvious really. It’s a big rush of emotion, where a live Indie feel rubs shoulders with raw Disco. Driven by a hazy, buzzy, guitar riff and waves of blissful synths these guys coax a sense of summertime nostalgia with just a hint of mystery in their music, allowing Matt’s vocals to sound both introspective and anthemic at the same time. Two songs down and Du Tonc have a flawless record so far, let’s hope they can keep it up. You should definitely try to catch Du Tonc live is they are in your area, dates here.

Du Tonc Darkness OFFICIAL VIDEO YouTube

We expected there to be a video coming for Du Tonc’s Darkness. The duo of MiGHty mOUse and Van She bassist and ElectroPopper Matt Van Schie’s début single is seriously one of the more impressive first records we’ve heard in ages. With a sprinkling of Indie, 80s, ElectroPop, Tropical and Disco, Darkness has something for everybody.

Check the hedonistic, feel good video, directed by Simon Savory. A colourful thesis on just letting everybody be who they want to be and have a good time.

Du Tonc

We’ve been waiting on this on for a while now, ever since London Disco guru MiGHty mOUse hinted he was working with Van She’s resident bassist and solo ElectroPopper Matt Van Schie. The result is finally here, premièred on The Magician’s Magic Tape this month, this is Du Tonc’s Darkness.

Darkness isn’t nearly as ominous as it’s name suggests, if fact it’s a pretty playful mixture between intelligent cosmic Disco and Indie-Pop. You may think that moody 80s Indie track, and a slightly Tropical flavoured Nu-Disco tune would make strange bedfellows, but in Darkness’ case the two sit together perfectly. Neither aspect of the song’s character overwhelming the other. A strange juxtaposition between the introverted and extroverted, that results in an insanely catchy sing-a-long chorus and a rolling dancefloor groove. We can easily see Du Tonc producing some of the more intelligent Disco tunes in the coming year.
