[Audio] Psychemagik reMixes Public Service Broadcasting’s ‘Gagarin’

We got to catch London based Krautrock/Synth/Coldwave/something outfit Public Service Broadcasting live at Bestival last year and they fast became one of the weekends highlights. While on record they aren’t quite out thing, live they are utterly fantastic. The duo have a new album, The Race For Space out soon and the records lead single, Gagarin, as been given a storming reMix by Disco don come Housemeister Psychemagik.

the original track is an almost Jazzy live performance, loaded with guitars and brass, but Psychemagik takes all those elements and gives them a machine makeover. The bassline, a loose if hypnotic affair on the original, becomes a hard hitting and compelling robots march on this mix aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Retaining PSB’s newsreel feel and the tune’s soul, Psychemagik flips it into an electronic, almost EBM at times, floorfiller.

[Download] Chromatics’ ‘Just Like You’

Johnny Jewel’s amazing Chromatics have announced the release of their forthcoming new album. Titled Dear Tommy, the follow up to 2012’s dreamy Kill For Love, is due out in a month and is eagerly anticipated by just about everyone we know. Johnny has taken to SoundCloud to announce the release and give away the albums first single, Just Like You as a free download. Check it out.

Just Like You is just the first in a string of new singles. Jewel will be releasing one a week until the albums March release and he has certainly chosen a belter to kick things off with. A swirling electronic symphony blessed with sweet vocals and lush (like, really lush) synths over a smooth steady beat. It’s an intoxicating SynthPop dream with a dark undertone. We’re very much looking forward to the album.

[Download] Computer Magic’s ‘Dreams Of Better Days (Don’t Pass Me By)’ & ‘Shipwrecking’

As you’ve probably heard, seen the Instagram photos, felt a tiny bit jealous about, the east coast of the US has been hit with an awesome blizzard in recent days. Being this snowed in can be a godsend for musicians who get forced to be shut in and writing songs. Danz A.K.A. Computer Magic, Brooklyn’s queen of synth DreamPop too the opportunity to produce a brand new tune; Dreams Of Better Days (Don’t Pass Me By). The track is not one appearing on Computer Magic’s forthcoming LP, so she’s giving it away for free. Yay!

Bits of Dreams Of Better Days (Don’t Pass Me By) certainly capture a wintery mood, but the whole track rolls along on a warm funk; delivered by raw drum samples and rounded synth bass. This meeting of icy and comforting really does capture the mood of being snowed in. Danz’s dainty vocal drifts in and out of the track, with a Chillwave, reverby edge, swapping prominence with buzzing electronics. Dreams Of Better Days (Don’t Pass Me By) has us well looking forward to the album.

Update: Since we wrote this (‘cos we tend to write at the weekend) Danze has unleashed another new track on her SoundCloud page. Shipwrecking is a effervescent exercise in garage SynthPop. Sounding like early an 90s Shoegaze tune recreated with vintage synths. Organic and fresh, Shipwrecking is the most fun you can have with synths and a voice and a healthy dose of Indie nostalgia.

[Audio] Apache Darling’s ‘Firebird’

Fresh Glasgow duo Apache Darling’s first tune, More Than Me, had a string of praise from some seriously important commentators. Now, with the release of their second tune it’s down to the like of us to add to the heap. Firebird is scarily good. If we were betting people we would put money on hearing a lot more from these two in 2015. We feel their festival season may be a tad busy.

Firebird is a sparse, yet, cinematic ElectroPop tune that combines warm, rousing synths with abrasive electronic effects to deliver something that’s both catchy and edgy. Singer Stefanie Lawrence’s vocals have an earnest quality to them that draws you in. The song itself feels, quite oddly, somewhat stadium rock; like if you took a stadium rock tune and recreated it on vintage synths in a suburban garage. It retains the majesty but makes it more personal and intimate. It’s hard to describe, just listen.

Markus Lundqvist directs the cinematic clip, with shades of Madonna’s Frozen video, which is simply laid out but stunningly shot.

[Audio] Scarlet Soho’s ‘In Cold Blood’

Next month sees the release of the third studio album from UK SynthPoppers Scarlet Soho. If fair to say that this duo are one of this country’s hidden gems. Them being largely unrecognized and tucked away on the stale Goth/Industrial end of the SynthPop scene is a massive shame as these guys, particularly in the last couple of years, are producing some of the catchiest and most relatable electronic Pop music around. They would easily be able to be high flyers on the Indie-Elector scene, or the proper SynthPop scene with the consistent quality they put out. Hopefully this new full length offering, In Cold Blood, will get them out to the wider audience they definitely deserve.

Waiting no time in pulling on your heartstrings, In Cold Blood launches with it’s title track; a dramatic and rousing slice of vintage Pop that set a tone for the rest of the album, delivering something a little more epic and rich than past Scarlet Soho albums. When The Lights Go Out is the first of the last couple of year’s EP’s lead track to feature on the album, Solo KO and Two Steps From Heartache are also represented and are amongst In Cold Blood’s highlights. When the Light Go Out was featured as one of our top twenty songs of 2012, and amongst it’s album contemporaries sounds as fresh and exciting as ever. What You Need is a nice combination of retro songwriting and modern production, a synergy you’ll find in numerous places on the record, and one of the qualities that make it a standout release. The majority of the listening experience you’ll get on In Cold Blood is an upbeat, nostalgic one; there’s a thread of energy and emotionality running through it’s nine track that is hard to resist, although you will also find quieter moments like the downtempo Depeche Mode of This Town Is Mine that sees James channelling a soloing Martin Gore and surprises such as 2015, a tune best described as ‘Scarlet Soho go full SynthWave’. If we had to guess at the next single, we’d probably pick Gigolo, a song that takes it;s time to grow on you, but soon it’s racing apreggios and utterly epic chorus draw you in and stick in your head. In Cold Blood isn’t a perfect release, Make The Final particularly feels like a mis-step, it’s muddy production doesn’t seem to sit right with it’s peers, but on the whole Scarlet Soho’s third offering is confident, classy and thoroughly deserving of your attention. [Video] DNKL’s ‘Wolfhour’

Sweedish SynthPop outfit DNLK’s new single, Wolfhour, is an absolutely huge slice of heavy, emotional, pulsating electronics that is utterly impossible to ignore. Dramatic, expansive and compelling, the track has now got itself a video.

Directed & produced by Eric Ivar Persson, the clip is as epic as you’d expect; utilising windswept, romantic Scandinavian geography to it;s fullest effect.

[Audio] Let Em Riot’s ‘The Manual’

Although he’s been busy recently with his new band Moderns, Dreamwave genius Alan Oakes hasn’t forgot about the moniker that made us fall in love with his music. Let Em Riot is back with a brand new EP, which is pretty damn exciting news! Lines will be available in March, but here’s a taste of what’s to come in the form of the EP’s lead track, The Manual. Get involved!

The Manual clearly shows off why Let Em Riot stands head and shoulders above his contemporaries. Rich and involving retro SynthPop, loaded with buoyant synths and skippy beats, carries the song; spiky synth bass and sparking chines flowing in that organic way Let Em Riot coaxes from his machines while Alan puts in one of his top emotional vocal performances. A very welcome return indeed.

[Audio] Avec Sans reMix Young Summer’s ‘Severing Ties’

Severing Ties is the latest tune from DC based single Young Summer. It’s taken from her album Siren, and is a sprawling and moody slice of folky electronic in that particularly American vein. But more than that, the track has just been given a whopping (yes! whopping!) reMix treatment from our favourite London duo (we’d better duck for cover, ‘cos there’s a lot of London based duo’s we’ve just pissed off!); Avec Sans. There’s a play button below, use it!

Taking cues from the slightly retro vibe of the original, the Sanses serve up what is possibly their most 80s sounding tune to date (yeah, we know, a lot of people say Avec Sans sound quite 80s anyway, but they are all very very wrong. You can get ElectroPop that doesn’t sound 80s y’know!). Even their usual playful use of sampling sounds a bit SK-1 (that’s a compliment BTW) amidst the layers of lush, twisting synths. From the thick chords, to the skippy arpeggios, there’s buoyant nostalgia that permeates this reMix and elevates the original’s vocals into something entirely more euphoric.
