Housquare

You can stop debating if the 90’s are back now. They are. Housquare have made it official.

Actually, Housquare have as much late 80’s House wrapped up in their sound as early 90’s. This is a revival of proper old school Chicago house with heaps of Acid and heaps of Soul. On The Fruit Records are playing their cards close to their chest with this one but if you miss orchestral stabs and burbling Acid badsslines the you’ll be wanting to pay attention to Housquare with interest!

Robortom & Au Revoir Simone get classical

Robortom is classical composer Tom Hodge, Sunday Best head honcho Rob Da Bank and electronica legend Tom Middleton with vocal stylings from ElectroPop girls Au Revoir Simone.

Their single ‘Paganini Rocks’ is a 21st century reworking of Paganini’s ‘24th Caprice’, originally written in 1819 and will be instantly recognisable to even the most uncultured. This new take on the melody sounds fresh and is sure to hit the charts. The video for the track premiered this week, check it out:

The name might be a mistake though, the track’s actually really good and ‘Paganini Rocks’ makes it sound gimmicky.

‘Paganini Rocks’ is out 5th December and will feature reMixes from Mighty Mouse, Louis La Roche, James Talk, and Digital Soundboy.

Groove Armada reMix HURTS’ new single

HURTS’ new single is released this week and even though everybody seems to agree that ‘Sunday’ is perfect single material it is ‘Stay’, which is fair enough, it’s a pretty powerful track.

So, to the reMixes! The awesome surprise of the single is Groove Armada signing up for reMix duties, and the reMix doesn’t disappoint. Slightly less vocal than I would have liked the mix is nonetheless an enticing House track with an early 90’s feel to it. From it’s orchestral stabs to it’s floaty piano, to it’s killer digital bassline this is 1991 warehouse stuff!

‘Stay’ and the album, ‘Happiness’, are out now.

TEEN

Sweeping in, like some kind of Funky-Electro-House valkyrie with her battle cry of “check mes tunes, cowboi!”, comes Amy Aubrac-Prince, otherwise known as TEEN, who crashed into the electronic rumors Inbox with a selection of original tracks and reMixes that really deserve your attention.

Based in Toronto, via France and New York, TEEN’s tracks straight-up late night party tunes, coated with massive doses of the ol’ French Touch. Able to give even the most seasoned Filter-House producer a run for their money Amy separates herself from the pack by mixing up the slick Disco of Filter-House with the raw party vibe of Electro-House. The result? Shaking asses!

Check the tracks:

TEEN – Body Heat (Movin’)

TEEN – Hell Leather

Also becoming a bit of a reMix machine, check out a couple of TEEN’s reMixes to see what happens when Amy gets her mitts on some vocals. Valery Gore and Woodhands get the TEEN enhancement here:

Valery Gore – Shoes Of Glass (TEEN reMix)

Woodhands – CP24 (TEEN reMix)

The Woodhands reMix is particularly awesome!

Finished listening? Right, off to MySpace then, to show Amy some love:

The Vault: Man Parrish

The Vault: The classics of Electronic Music. The influential and the groundbreaking. The pioneering and the music we grew up on…ManParrish

Yeah, yeah, I know. electronic rumors in ‘actually writing one of their supposedly ‘regular’ columns’ shocker!

Well, it was time to dust off The Vault and feature an artist I have been meaning to write about ever since I came up with The Vault idea.

Electro legend Man Parrish.

Not just instrumental in shaping the sound of Electro Hip-Hop, but influential in most electronic music to this day, Manuel ‘Manny’ Parrish took Hip-Hop to the Discos of New York and took Disco to the streets. Coming out of the Studio54 scene to become one of the original, if not the first, producer/artists in electronic music, Man used costume, theatrics and make–up, to put on an unforgettable live show that also had the side effect of concealing his identity (a Caucasian producer in an African American dominated Hip-Hop scene).

Man Parrish’s place in the history of Electro, ElectroPop and Club music is undeniable. Maybe even more than Arthur Baker and Afrika Bambaataa, Man brought electro Hip-Hop to the masses, even the UK charts, and along with the likes of Baker & Bambaata, Cybotron, and Mantronix shaped an electronic club sound that Hip-Hop would soon forsake but SynthPop, House and Techno would utilise as a base to build upon.

Just listen to these tracks off the self titled début album and the classic single ‘Boogie Down (Bronx)’, they still sound fresh today and the beats, lead lines and vocoders could easily be from any contemporary tune featured on electronic rumors. Most European readers will probably be most familiar with Manny’s work from his Italo/hi-RG collaboration with Man 2 Man from 1986.

Personally, I think 1984’s ‘Boogie Down (Bronx)’ was one of the first synthesizer riffs that got stuck in may head and I have always loved Man Parrish’s combination of the aggressive Funk of early Electro Hip-Hop and the riffs and lead lines of SynthPop. Oh, and the man wields a mean vocoder too!

Dragonette feature with Kaskade

Kaskade

Indie-Electro outfit Dragonette are featured on the second single from Chicago DJ Kaskade’s second single from his forthcoming ‘Dynasty’ album.

Dragonette stamp their own Indie-Electro style all over this track by the club producer resulting in an Indie-House-Pop mash up which has more than enough of Dragonette’s guitars and vocal style to elevate it above your standard vocal House collaboration.

‘Dynasty’ is out 27th April digitally and 11 May on physical release.

The Revenge

TheRevenge

I was turned onto The Revenge over at Big Stereo, I don’t usually go for Prog House all that much but these two tracks just really appealed to me for two very different reasons.

The first track, ‘Forever In Their Debt’, had me hooked instantly just with it’s choice of bass sound. That rounded, slightly acidy, square wave bass reminds me so much of the good ol’ days of Beep House when early Warp Records releases were tearing up the floor. In fact, the whole tune has got that vibe. The second slice is a cover of S.O.S. Band’s ‘Just Be Good To Me’ featuring Danielle Moore from Crazy P on vocal duties, I can’t help it, I’ve loved the song ever since Beats International’s ‘Dub Be Good To Me’. Ah…Lindy Layton…
