[Download] Ride The Universe cover Ian Pooley’s ‘900 Degrees’

Dapper Disco dons Ride The Universe take us back to the heady golden days of the mid-2000s Disco resurgence with the gloriously retro slice of French Touch. It’s also a cover of a dance track, which is an odd proposition, and a brave one too as covering a track produced entirely with samples and synths could all –to-easily fall into the trap of just being a recreation rather than your own take on a song. The song in question is Ian Pooley’s 2000 Funky House floorfiller 900 Degrees; how do Ride The Universe do?

Not bad at all as it turns out. It’s a pretty faithful representation of the original, albeit with a beefier sound and more of a driving Disco groove, befitting todays dancefloors. We still not sure what constitutes a cover in this instance, more than a reproduction or even a reMix, but it you stop worrying and sink into the tune you’ll find something to drag you to the dancefloor. The end result, as we mentioned, turns out to be classic sounding French Touch. We would have liked to hear a bit more Ride The Universe’s personality in the track; but then again we just want to hear more from Ride The Universe full stop.

[Video] Kid Kasio’s ‘Blood Red Sky’

Britain’s reining champ of vintage Pop Kid Kasio is back with another taste of what to his expect from his forthcoming sophomore album. This is the epic Blood Red Sky.

As usual Kid Kasio delivers an ambitious and expansive video, shot mostly in Spain. Taking advantage of some gorgeous scenery Kasio brings a western theme with a little 80s Pop flair.

[Download] Zimmer reMixes Wunder Wunder’s ‘Midnight Hours’

Los Angeles based Miami Horror spin-off Wunder Wunder have a habit of choosing the smoothes of producers for their reMixes. Back in the summer we vibed to Goldroom’s take on their tune Coastline; now Parisian Horizontal Disco mastermind Zimmer turns in this lazy, poolside jam in his version of Midnight Hours. The track is taken from Wunder Wunder’s début album, Everything Infinite.

Zimmer serves up a chilled mix of laid back piano and swirling pads alongside a woody Disco groove. The sleepy vibes are the prefect accompaniment for the original’s Psychedelic Pop sensibilities, creating something dancefloor friendly, but dreamy and spaced out. Stick this in your headphones and sink into the sounds.

[Audio] Say Lou Lou X Lindstrøm’s ‘Games For Girls’ reMixed by The Penelopes

The funky Disco spike in Australian/Swedish ElectroPop sisters Say Lou Lou’s career to day, their collaboration with Comic Disco dog Lindstrøm Games For Girls has been brought back into their more familiar ElectroPop territory with this storming new reMix from our favourite Parisians lost in London, The Penelopes. As Say Lou Lou ramp up to the release of their début album, Lucid Dreaming, early next year, this is the prefect tune to bring the hype.

The Penelopes lay on the Tropical grooves thick to keep things fresh, but the main crux of the reMix is turbocharging the groove. This is a slamming dancefloor take on the tune; the beats pound, the basses pop and the builds go stratospheric. A punchy synth symphony that’s perfectly at home with Say Lou Lou’s vocals, which are kept largely intact here. the Penelopes have turned in an awesome, adrenaline spiking track that we’re saving for the weekend.

[Audio] Earl Grey reMixes Tunnel Signs’ ‘Traxworks’

Here’s the latest slice of synthesizer goodness from The C90s’ Danny Ashenden in his Earl Grey guise. It;’s for Australian producer Tunnel Signs who’s teamed up with the half of Act Yo Age and awfully named Jerk Boy to release Traxworks, a pretty slick and rumbling Techno track that Earl Grey lifts into space-age House territory.

Earl Grey’s take on the tune is a glorious burbling House track that leans heavily both on Acid and Cosmic Disco with a sweet does of Bleep House thrown in for good measure (and seeing as Bleep House is one of our favourite forms of House music, that seriously endears the track to us). Danny keeps the track spacious and atmospheric, with layers of Sci-Fi soundscaping, but never looses sight of that tight tight warehouse vibe; delivering an out-of-body dancefloor experience.

[Video] Little Boots’ ‘Taste It’

In the nicest surprise last week had to offer, the wonderful and synthetically ecclectic Ms. Little Boots announced the release of her new EP, Business Pleasure, with the lead track Taste It. It’s a cracking take on left-field Pop that has now got itself a shiny new video. Check it out.

Ish Sahotay and Victoria herself directs the clip, which is pretty unnerving Part ode to, part cautionary statement about, 80s consumerism and excess. All delivered Generation Game style.

[Download] Strangers cover Shakespeare’s Sister’s ‘Stay’

The reigning champs of epic and emotional British Pop, Strangers, are currently holed up in their studio putting the finishing touches to their eagerly awaited début full length record. Whilst the album is given all due spit and polish, Dave took a breather to indulge himself in this cover version. We gotta’ say, taking on Shakespeare’s Sister’s Stay is pretty fucking brave. The track is so imbued with Siobhan and Marcella’s personality that all you can do is completely make it your own, and that can be hard with such a defining track. Let’s see how Strangers does.

Dave doesn’t;t even try to ape Shakespeare’s Sister (which is probably a good plan), preferring to take an amazing well written song and treat it like it came straight out of Stranger’s studio. The vocals are given a bar-room bluesy treatments that pairs nicely with the tracks haunting piano. The piano, of course, soon gives way to a symphony of pulsating electronic bass and rising synth riffs set to a skippy vintage drum pattern. Thanks Dave; that’ll do nicely until Raife has finished mixing the album, now get on with it!

[Download] Cavaliers Of Fun reMixes Gwen Stefani’s ‘Baby Don’t Lie’

Mediterranean Dreamwaver Cavaliers Of Fun is has just dropped this brand new sunshine-y reMix to warm your ears this winter. Ricco has been quite quiet for a while, but he’s chosen to remind you all of his holiday vibes with this take on Gwen Stefani’s ‘comeback’ single of earlier this year, Baby Don’t Lie.

Ricco keeps a lot of the original intact on his version, the vocals, backing vocals and lead line are all present and correct; but added to this you have both the Cavaliers Of Fun pumping Disco bass, and Vitali’s disturbing love of beach guitar. The end result is a version of the single with the groove turned up to 10, it’s not a massive departure from Stefani’s vision, but enough to make it supremely dancefloor friendly.

[Video] IYES’ ‘Glow’

Sorry IYES, we’re a bit behind with this one. Because stuff. Anyway, the Brighton ElectroPop duo continue to impress with their unique, emotional and powerful sound. Glow, a track that’s been kicking around for a while now, is finally getting a proper release. Ecclectic stuff.

Check out the video, directed by Kenny McCracken, which appears to feature the duo being uncovered with sand.

[Audio] XO’s ‘Pulling Me Under’

The London crew is all getting together for this one, rising retro-House producer XO is gearing up to release his début EP, Though The Night, at the start of next month and for the record’s second track (after last month’s title track unveiling) track he’s enlisted the help of Mr. Leo Kalyan on vocal duties for a song that was co-penned by songwriter extraordinaire MNEK. This is Pulling Me Under.

Pulling Me Under is a slow groover, a warm and laid back late night jam. Combining Kalyan’s future R&B croon with some involving Deep House sounds; all slotted into an simple and infectious Pop song. The driving forces of the music are all understated and emotion, like the gentle piano hook the runs throughout that contrasts nicely with the feet moving beat. XO is definitely on our radar as one to watch now.
